Why do gay men love divas so much?

Музыка

Gay men are an undeniably a very diverse community, who can be found in all areas of life. But I don’t think it’s unfair to say that a huge number of us not just love, but are obsessed by divas. And its’ a relationship I’ve long been fascinated by.
It has to be about much more than just the music - so why exactly is the connection between queer men and their female pop icons so special? What needs do they fill within us? Why is the Queen of Pop Madonna especially important to us? Why are these women quasi-religious figures in the community? And why don’t gay men feel the same way about male superstars? This mini-documentary explores these questions and more.

I think as a gay man myself, I've aways admired the combination of femininity and strength. It extends to people who aren't pop stars. Judge Judy is one of my biggest role models. I think it's a reminder that for a group of men who don't fit in with "bro" culture and may be more interested in feminine things, that it doesn't make you weak. For me, Madonna will always be the ultimate example of that because of her strength and quite frankly her rudeness. The combination of grit and glamour.

Though Britney has never been as outspoken as Lady Gaga, Madonna, or Beyonce on social issues, one of the main reasons why she will always be my main pop girl is because of how she reflected and represented her blossoming sexuality (and was scorned for it) through her art (music, music videos, performances, and magazine cover shoots). Everything about Britney served as a form of escapism for me; her art helped me escape my shame, and also seeing someone so young and unashamed to express her sexuality, empowered me to do the same. My appreciation for her continued to grow between 2006-2008. If you were an avid pop culture junky during that period, you'll fully comprehend how Britney was mocked by the media and public for literally everything - her mental health, body, parenting skills, fashion, etc. Then came the conservatorship and her loss of autonomy. While other gay icons exude self-possession, Britney's vulnerability and fragile resilience will forever make her the ultimate gay icon of the 21st century.

I think gay men don’t gravitate as much toward other gay male (or non-female) artists, partly because of internalised homophobia. Seeing an artist like Lil Nas X or Sam Smith being so open with their queerness, I think brings up uncomfortable feelings with some gay men that hit too close to home. Female artists can be a fantasy and something we adore but can’t fully understand because we aren’t women, but openly gay male artists don’t offer that same fantasy, and can remind us of our own struggles and lives too much. Just a theory but great video, rly interesting!

I don't think it's internalized homophobia. Concerning the classics (Freddy, Elton, etc) I don't like their music, it's not that I think it's bad, I just can't appreciate their music genres. With the new ones, I think of them as crushes, beauty or sex symbols since they are all attractive, but I feel nothing more. Since I'm I kid I have only admired strong females in movies, music, etc, and aspired to be like them. Men don't spark these feelings in me, no matter their sexual orientation, they have a different role in my heart/mind. Sometimes I hold on to this feeling to try to understand what a trans women must feel like, they might feel this way but 10x more.

It’s interesting how gay men don’t look for masculine/man role models who are empowered and unapologetic. Almost like gay men feel uncomfortable in their own masculinity. My gay coworker says he hates being called bro or buddy because it’s “too masculine” which is interesting. Gays love to be fabulous and camp and break gender roles UNTIL it comes to dating then suddenly they want a masculine straight acting man to let them be the “girl” of the relationship. Very heteronormative. Gay men need to be told it’s okay to be men and embrace it.

@@tula1433I think you may have missed the mark. A lot of powerful female performers wholeheartedly embody feminine and masculine energy. Almost all of them do, actually. That is much more relatable to non-straight men, who do the same. The great big male performers do not wholly embody both masculine and feminine energies (with very few exceptions like Prince, who is actually counted among the “divas”). If they did, they would lose their stature and be mocked. So, male stars are not so relatable-actually, they are the opposite of relatable, reminding a gay man of a time in his own life, perhaps, when he felt similarly restricted and ONLY embodied the masculine. I think female pop “divas” have a unique blend of masculine and feminine qualities. They are outwardly feminine but their presence is dominant and assertive. That’s why I believe gay man are attracted to these amazing women. Many of us are also a unique mix of masculine and feminine qualities. With the fem being the more outward appearance but the masculine is still there, right under the surface.

One curious phenomena here in Brazil was the rise of Drag Singers. Unlike the USA drag race girls the dragqueens became nationwide household names and main artists in the market. Pabllo Vittar broke the bubble and the year she had her breakthrough she was probably the most spoken about artist her songs K.O. was the most succesful song of the year 2017 and Corpo Sensual was just another massive mega-hit in the following year. Her popularity is dwindling year by year and she doesn't make those stream numbers again (hundreds of millions), but she is still a household name and her fanbase is truly very, very strong online. The same goes for Gloria Groove, she was the artist of the year 2022 in Brazil, her single "A Queda" about cancel culture was the biggest song of the year, she had consistent success for her "Lady Leste" album, great critic reviews (and she actually really sings) and became a household name that performs the major festivals in the country and has a huge following, though she built her success little by little with over a dozen successful singles before becoming mainstream. The gays LOVE THEM, they are true divas, just like Anitta, Marilia Mendonça, Iza, Ludmilla, maybe bigger than some of them, with stronger fanbases. They are the first case in Brazil where gay men became true divas and have been almost fully embraced by the gays. There are also a few drag singers like Lia Clark, Potiguara Bardot, Kaya Conky that didn't become mainstream, but are still very successful in the bubble of the LGBTQIAPN+ community.

I do think there are exceptions about the identification with just women. Seeing Elton John wrap an entire stadium around his finger at age 75 - with so much energy and power when he shouldn’t even be alive he’s survived so damn much - is the single most powerful concert experience I’ve ever had. Let’s not get started on what he’s done to fight AIDS, the trails he has blazed, his hard-fought battle to find happiness and authenticity, all the while churning hit after hit for decades. There’s also his fierce protectiveness of Gaga, and of many younger artists in general. He is definitely in the pantheon of hallowed divadom in my eyes - and he wears the feather boa proudly!

Definitely agree on Elton! But he seems to be the exception, sadly. Like, why isn't Adam Lambert as popular? What about Troye Sivan, or Lil Nas X (who is the biggest of the new generation, but nowhere near the status of Icons like Elton, Madonna, Gaga etc.)? There seem to be very few out and proud gay artists who get embraced by the gay community in the same way these iconic women are

@@davidmorris8319 Thanks for the reply. Who knows? Maybe that will change. You’re absolutely right, though, that he is the exception. I think if Freddie Mercury hadn’t succumbed to AIDS he would be standing alongside Elton in this regard. Even though he wasn’t gay, I think it’s important to point out that Tony Bennett championed many considered outsiders, including gay artists he collaborated with (his signature song was written by a gay couple) and that he was a true friend to Judy Garland and later to Lady Gaga. He’s certainly an ally who deserves acknowledgement. His heart was always pure, and that showed in his work and in his actions. He walked the walk. He’d be a considerable ally even if he hadn’t lasted long enough to shepherd Gaga through tough times and begin a friendship with her that touched us all.

Video Idea Suggestion: Maybe if possible try to explore Latinx divas impact in the world. From Selena, Gloria Stefan, Soraya Lamilla, Shakira, Jlo, even Xtina.

Donna Summer was the woman who owned her sexuality and it was powerful. She made people believe it was okay to be expressive. When she renewed her faith in God, it was to keep herself grounded, as she sometimes didn't know what city she was waking up in. They would give her pills to wake her up and pills to help her sleep. She found herself in a hotel room alone in a skyscraper, and as she was stepping out of the window, her heel got caught on the cord used to draw the drapes, and as she struggled to free her heel, the door opened and in walked maid service. Their eyes locked on each other, not knowing what to say. But, the timing of that woman saved Donna's life. As she told Act Up, the aggressive AIDS activists in a letter, that she didn't turn away from us, her gay fans, but we turned away from her. I don't think she understood that a lot of gay people have feelings about religion, in that religion has been a major cause for families disowning their gay kids. In the early 1990s I worked for the photographer who did Donna's Bad Girls album, On the Radio, There Goes My Baby, She Works Hard for the Money, and many more... Harry Langdon, Jr., son of silent screen star Harry Langdon, and I got to knew her very well. When she signed her book for me, she signed it, "Love Mom". She was an amazing friend and I loved her and her husband, Bruce, and her sister Mary Ellen, and it was devastating when she passed away. But, she left me with a lot of photos, tokens and memories, and a silver keychain from a Beverly Hills jewelry store that says my name on one side, and Love, Donna on the other. I was in the room with her when she did an interview and she told how one of her earliest friends as little girl was a gay boy. She said she had always had gay friends in her life, and people she worked with, and that she would have gay friends until the day she dies... the press release of her passing, on behalf of the family, was from a long time gay, mutual friend, who became an rep. for many artists. Also, her long-time attorney, who I sat next to at a TV taping. Donna's husband on my left, and her attorney and his younger boyfriend. When the homophobic story came out about Donna, the people around her kept it from her because they thought no one would believe it anyway and it would blow over. It wasn't until a general notice went out to much of the talent with William Morris Agency for acts to perform for an AIDS Benefit in NY that Donna found out about the scandal. When Donna read the notice of the benefit, she immediately said she would do it. But, those in charge of the benefit, declined. When Donna asked why? That's when she was told. She was beside herself with grief, and she terminated two professional relationships over it, and it took many years for them to reconcile. It may have played a part in her leaving Casablanca Records and going to Geffen. And, when NY Magazine printed the story as though it were true, she sued. Investigations were launched, and scores of people interviewed. It was around this time that her gay best friend/little brother, Paul Jabara, passed away. I saw Donna right after she had seen Paul. When she walked into the studio, she kissed me on the lips, gave me a quick hug and went to her dressing room. I stopped her assistant and asked, "What's wrong?" I could tell immediately. Her assistant explained they had just left Paul Jabara's house and spent about 1.5 hours there. She said when they arrived, Donna went into Paul's bedroom alone and closed the doors behind her. A friend and William Morris contract agent told me there was a stained-glass window in paul's bedroom, above the main bedroom windows, of a giant penis. lol. Anyway, Donna remained with Paul that entire time and when she came out her assistant could tell Donna had cried. I asked, What can I do? And, she told me there was nothing I could do, other than to be myself with her. She said that Donna is really strong and she will be able to set it aside so we can do the photoshoot, but she will likely have more tears at home talking to her husband. Donna did snap out of it, she did tell me she had been at Paul's house, and that he wasn't doing well. Donna told me that she knew a lot of gay men who had died, and it was heartbreaking. She said, these were really beautiful men. I mean, really beautiful, inside and out, gorgeous men. And, they're gone.

Gay icons are something I like to think about randomly and I definitely always think that there are several archetypes of pop divas that end up being considered gay icons. Like there are "underdogs" like Carly Rae Jepsen who aren't that popular in the mainstream but are still really cool/talented, "tragic figures" like Judy Garland or Whitney Houston who suffered a lot during their lives, and "final girls" like Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Cher, Mariah, who overcome the misogyny, racism, etc that the industry throws at them to become legends (I think everyone who ends up having longevity and come to be considered legends end up being considered final girls). There are other archetypes like kooky girls are really weird and creative like Gaga or Grace Jones, and chaotic girls are just... messy (like Elizabeth Taylor or Ariana these days lol) but I think all of these are relatable to a lot of us or we might have really connected with each of these at some point. I also think there’s a difference between being liked by the gays and being a "gay icon”. Like artists like Taylor Swift or Adele might be liked by us but I think Ariana for example is considered more of a gay icon than them; she has a few songs that are considered gay anthems, she’s openly supported us, and I think the bombing at her concert along with what was going on in her personal life a few years ago might’ve put her in the tragic figure category (even if she's moved out of that now). It also helps if they’re able to be easily imitated by drag queens 💅

As a cis man, I found this quiet informational. But just like we all have our "heroes" and "inspirational figures," do beware. Trying to look up to a false sense of beauty or idea can itself be toxic, and this goes to anyone. Be it gay, straight, lesbian, trans, or bi. To some extent we need to live in the "real world," and can't fantasize too much about "perfection," or else we are trapped in a loop of depression, low self-esteem, and paranoia. Leave your idols just like what they are, idols. A fantasy, but never strive to be like them, because they don't show their lows, imperfections, and weaknesses. Even though some people might seem like they "worked hard to where they got," when you actually do a deep study a lot of that road was paved with privilege, connections, or status that to the "normal" person is simply unobtainable. At the end of the day, of course don't live a dull life and enjoy it to the fullest. And if you want to live in a fantasy or ideal, that is totally ok. Just be aware that sometimes "perfections" are a lie and be ready to confront this blow if you ever become aware of it.

Very true! It’s also important to remember that putting a pressure for them (divas/ idols) to live up to the pedestal “we” place them on could bring more stress onto them and at the end of the day they are human just like us. That’s an unfair expectation for any one person to live up to. Great comment!

  • @yrazu05

@SallyWilliams I won't take away people's personal struggles since we all go through the same feelings. But comparing your struggles to a movie star or celebrity, again is fictitious and takes you down a path of low self-esteem. Can't compare what's considered "poor" in 3rd world countries to what is considered "poor" in first world nations. Can't compare your financial struggles to that of a billionaire. Yes, we all go through the same or similar feelings, which I empathize with, but the situation is different, and the struggle is not the same. Realizing this makes you take control of your situation. Yes, others can serve as inspiration, but reality needs to be set in place, and you need to realize that it won't be for you like it was for them so you need to take charge.

Biggest favor Madonna ever did to me was when she released Erotica album... which came out when I was 18. By talking openly about sex and her fantasies she made me realize I had to break that desire/sin circle I was drowning in. Living in a country even today being gay still gets a huge negative reaction, I needed someone to turn to. You know when people feel down and desperate they turn to their families, friends or religion... but we were robbed from them... family and friends were loving someone they see on the surface not real us... or me in that case. With every people saying you are a sinner and God even want you to not exist you feel so alone... Then came those divas, even with their handicaps they were glamorous and strong which they lend me part of it with their songs or works. Maybe in a sense they became my own religion which mold me, made me more comfortable in my skin and most importantly made me accept myself as who I am. Thanks so much for your wonderful video.

That Matthew Todd quote hit the nail on the hammer for me. Beyonce's music was my escape, I loved her songs since I was 10 years old growing up in the 2000s. Her music to me was liberation and freedom of expression, her love songs showed me the beauty of being vulnerable and in love. I thought her art was so beautiful, how could you possibly hide your love for her, it must be celebrated and cherished, it must be shared, unapologetically. Everyone around me immediately knew I was a stan before stan was a thing. As an adult, I recently realized that it was just a mirror for my sexuality. Something I had to hide about myself, I never did with my love for her and her music. What Lemonade was for women, Renaissance was for queer people. Her music feels personal, whether she wrote the material herself, or performed it vocally, it comes off as authentic, and anyone who doesn't like her deep down hates women and is homophobic.

I’ve always had a complicated relationship with this question and in fact initially skipped to the part about why not male stars. Freddie Mercury, Elton John, George Michael may have been closeted at the peak of their careers but now that there is that acceptance, why not elevate them within the culture that a) we now know their sexuality and b) know they were successful but based on their genuine talent, not their sexual orientation? I recall in my 20’s learning that there were many rockstars that were either bi or gay such as Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Panic at the Disco’s Brendan Urie or Judas Priest’s Rob Halford and was incredibly comforted to learn this. :)

I absolutely LOVE my pop divas so much, and your video is meticulously researched and amazingly presented, but I also want to point out how, for another sizeable segment of gay men, women in rock and metal are also total icons for us, like Amy Lee of Evanescence, Hayley Williams, Cristina Scabbia, Sharon den Adel, Floor Jansen etc. Amy Lee means so much to me because growing up in a household where my father always played HIS rock music, Amy was a revelation for me because she made me feel like I had a home in rock and metal music (she introduced me to love those genres that I now love so much), genres that have often made us feel alienated despite gay men like Robert Halford being loved by straight men. She took the testosterone-fueled rock and nu-metal scene of the 2000s and spun it on its head, injecting unabashed femininity and a sense of mysterious beauty, and a profound sense of strength through vulnerability that few artists can replicate with an infectious combination of her feminine soaring vocals and crashing guitars and balladry which is so cathartic to me. Like many of the divas you mentioned, she has had to overcome so much. She was always the choir nerd and always felt like she didn’t fit in growing up in rural Arkansas; she was shy and introverted. When she got signed, she had to fight so hard for her artistic integrity, with the label wanting her to have a full-time male rapper, which would have been awful. She refused to cave in, and she packed up everything to go back home to Arkansas with tears in her eyes, her dreams crushed. Luckily, the label finally agreed to have her as long as Bring Me to Life had the rap. She had bottles thrown at her at metal and rock festivals because she was one of the only women in the entire game at that time. She lost her younger sister in her childhood and lost her brother to complications from epilepsy. She has constantly had music executives tell her that her style of music wouldn’t work and proved them wrong with Fallen. She’s had constant unfair genre labels and stereotypes put on her (the “goth girl”) and was pressured to sexualize herself when she didn’t want to. Bro culture telling her she is not rock or metal enough. Her ex and songwriting partner, Ben Moody, was abusive, and her relationship with Shaun Morgan imploded in the public eye. Her baby and band Evanescence have had many lineup changes because she has had to fight so hard to make music how she wanted to as the primary songwriter. Her music often talks about feeling trapped, grief, and a profound sense of loss. For me, divas like Kylie are my angels of light, but Amy is my angel of darkness. She talks about the other side of the coin. The mental health struggles (Lithium), the pitfalls of fame (Everybody’s Fool), getting wronged by men (Going Under, Call Me When You’re Sober), questioning whether you are even worthy of love (Good Enough, Bring Me to Life), the loss of loved ones (Hello, Like You), male victims of sex trafficking (My Heart is Broken), pure escapism (Imaginary, What You Want) and struggling to navigate growing up Christian and with your worth in the eyes of God (Tourniquet). These things all resonate with me so much as an introverted gay man growing up in an unaccepting religious household. I love my metal and rock queens and my pop queens. THEY ALL ROCK!! Great video Jonny!

I grew up a gay black kid in the early 2000s. I was one of very few brave enough to admit who i am and thats becsuse of madonna and Kylie. Both became representations of strength in my life. Both were bullied for one reason or another rather it was their talent, age, to what they wore and how much. Madonna with her mother dying and surviving in the streets of nyc trying to get a career to kylie fighting and beating cancer. Both have constantly reminded me if she can do it so can i and im also a stronger person for it. That and of course their music is why they are my top 2 icons. Donna Summer is the third. I never believed the rumors on her.

I can't tell you how seen I feel with you commenting this. I ABSOLUTELY love my pop divas so much, but Amy is just the absolute icon for me because she embodies strength through vulnerability for me more than any artist (at least for me). Her melodic song structures coupled with driving guitars and soaring vocals, introspective songwriting, and how much she had to overcome (abusive relationships with Shaun and Ben, having to fight for artistic integrity even giving up everything because the label wanted a full-time male rapper, losing her younger sister at a young age, losing her brother from complications of epilepsy, dealing with unfair labels impressed upon her like "Christian" "Nu-metal" etc which fail to capture the entirety of her artistry etc. Growing up in an unaccepting Christian environment, her use of that kind of language in some of her songs like Tourniquet and the feeling of being trapped mean so much for me, or songs like Everybody's Fool that talk about the lies of the media etc.) She is my Snow White Queen and my dark angel

Nowadays I listen to rock music almost exclusively, but during my adolescence, for a time, pop music made by some of these women, and many others not mentioned in this video, was my refuge. Their struggles to break into and survive the entertainment industry, their life stories, formed this parasocial relationship I used to have. I don't listen to their music any more, but they still have special place in my heart when I think of me as a teenager. A few days ago nostalgia kicked in and I decided to purchase a ticket to see Madonna next April. I checked the setlist, and you'd better believe I'll be singing along with the crowd.

What a fantastic video essay! I always pondered this question myself as a gay man. Why such intensity and passion we feel towards our divas? I knew one thing for sure. It's because we are inspired to emulate their unshakeable confidence in themselves and their skills. They know what their strengths are and utilize them perfectly. Which can only come from hours of hard work, practice, and determination. Magnetic and commanding stage presence that Diva's are required to have doesn't come magically. You study every single detail and facial expression tirelessly until it fits the image of the performance of your creative vision. That's pretty friggin cool.
