What You Need To Know About Circular Panning Law in FL Studio!

Музыка

You may have been told to turn off "circular panning law" in FL Studio because it's supposed to cause bad sound quality. In this video I will try to explain to you in simple terms what a panning law is and how it affects your music.
Keep in mind that this is a very simplified explanation. It's intended for beginners who are are confused about the whole panning law vs quality thing.
There are scenarios where one panning law is preferred over the other. Like in hard panning situations. There are things to take into consideration such as signal merging and so on.
However, for most normal day to day panning use that's of little or no concern as in most situations one should not pan more than 20-30% after all.
Some mixer and DAW pan controls work by attenuating the level of both left and right output channels as the pan control is moved towards the centre. Others work by raising the level of one channel as the pan moves towards that side. The perceived effect is much the same, but the absolute levels obviously differ, which can be significant in some situations! The amount by which the signal level is altered is referred to as the ‘panning law’, and there are two fundamental approaches with quite different aims and results.
If you are planning on doing some serious hard panning and are concerned about the stereo field then you should do some more technical reading on how the panning laws actually work.
However, the actual panning law only really becomes significant when a source is being actively panned across the soundstage and you want your audience to perceive the source as remaining at a constant level as it moves around. For any given static pan position you have to balance the source in the mix accordingly, and if you change the pan position you’ll inevitably also change the relative level of that source slightly and so will probably have to tweak the source level to maintain the same overall mix balance.
The two fundamental panning laws relate to the way the material will be auditioned. If you want the panned sound to be perceived, acoustically, as remaining at a constant volume regardless of the pan position, then the centre attenuation needs to be 3dB. This is because the acoustic summation of two identical signals increases the perceived volume by 3dB. So this is the law to choose if your audience will only ever listen via stereo loudspeakers.
However, if you want the panned sound to be perceived as having a constant level when summed to mono, the centre attenuation needs to be 6dB, because the electrical addition of two identical signals creates a new signal with an amplitude which is 6dB larger. So this is the law to choose if your audience is likely to hear a mono sum, such as when broadcast on radio or TV, or in a club, or on a mobile phone or tablet.
Most mixing consoles and a great many DAWs employ a compromise option of 4.5dB centre attenuation, which is half-way between the two previous ideals. The idea is to present a very reasonable compromise with only minor level variations as a source is panned across the sound stage, regardless of the listening format.
Most DAWs offer all of these options and allow the specific panning law (ie. centre attenuation) to be selected to suit the application. However, not all DAWs default to the same starting mode, which is one common reason why mixes constructed on different DAWs but with apparently identical fader and pan control settings can sound subtly but noticeably different.
As you can see, panning laws will affect the way you mix. It affects volume / levels, but it does not affect sound quality in any way. Louder volumes tend to sound better to the human ear. In some cases it's reasonable to assume that some people may think that the sound quality has increased when switching from one panning law to the other, when in reality it's just the levels that has changed.
You shouldn't worry to much about this. Regardless of what panning law you use, you should take care of any level related issues in the mix anyways.
A last note of caution: If you collaborate with another producer, make sure you both use the same panning law!

    I run my outboard preamps loud, up to line level. They're microphones on different speakers, so I get a more detailed sound. Then I hard pan them on the mixer track so I can have only one speaker on Left and the other different speaker on Right. However the signal is boosted, due to circular panning law, over clip, so I have to reduce the preamp to -4 to compensate for what circular panning is about to do to my level. Triangular Panning Law is what I require, this has plagued me for 4 years, and you just saved my ass. Thank you.

    @@FireWalkMusic This tidbit of information that I had missed for years, KZread put you in my recommended feed... As though they knew I needed the information. (blown away) And I have never heard this info before, on any other video. But it allowed me to push my preamps a bit harder, and the difference was massive. I did A/B against tracks I had done prior, and it sounds like there's a mask over the audio on Circular. The tracking is hot, and they will not mix at these levels and must be turned down, but I would rather have the full resolution at tracking and turn down at mixing. Just in case I want to push them up, I have the full volume recording. Thanks again. This is the biggest revelation I've had since using FLS 5.

    this wasn’t even information I was specifically in need of, but now I see how useful it is to actually know what’s happening to the sound with the tiniest adjustments I make. I subscribed. Is this still automatically applied by fl studio when using panning controls other than the one in the mixer? For example, the panning control in the piano roll, or a 3rd party (or even stock) VST that has panning controls.

    Thank you! Glad you like them :) There's really no rules as to when you should one over the other. Let's say you use circular panning law and you hard pan, then it will become somewhat louder than if you used triangular panning law. That's the only difference. In any case you can simply adjust the volume by adjusting the volume fader in the mixer to acheive the same volume. That's really all there is to it. How much you have to move the volume fader when you hard pan, depending on which law you go for. Just use your ears and you should be good. :)

    Ye, I've seen that one, very intriguing. And I wonder would you like to make more videos about that genre? I noticed many of your sample music pieces are the chill style. Also my friend told me about this specific sound effect, the sewer sound stage, that is used a lot in chill style music. I'm not sure about the term but what it basically sounds is like from an away distance. It sounds more muted and lagging than other sounds. But it doesn't sound like the volume is turned down. My friend told me the sewer sound stage got its length larger than its width. I'm not very sure about what that means and I guess it might have something to do with sound stages. The example I can think of is "No Sleep" by TRINIX. The beginning vocal sounds are like that.

    Hi there! thanks for your videos! I have a question. Some vst plugins have a big stereo widening, like the korg m1 or the Nexus. The problem is that when i set it to mono it loses a lot of information and sound, and if i make it mono compatible it loses that nice stereo widening. Is that a way to fix it? Thanks in advance

  • @FireWalkMusic

    @FireWalkMusic

    6 жыл бұрын

    Mono will always sound different to stereo. Unfortunately there's not much you can do about that. The reason for this is that the mono mix contains only the 'mid' information whereas the stereo mix has both 'mid' and 'side' information.The reason a stereo mix 'sounds massive' is because of the quantity and nature of the side signal. If there is a lot of out-of-phase information in the stereo mix it will tend to sound very big, but this information will largely be lost when listening to the mid signal only. The use of mono is important in any mix. You typically want your low end to be in mono (in the middle of the mix). So that the powerful low end is playing with equal intensity on both speakers, and is centered. Is there any specific reason you need it to be mono? Stereo widening is usually used on leads and such. :)

  • @DJGROUSE

    Hi! thanks for taking your time! the main reason that i need the lead in mono, is that most of small club only have one speaker in the dj both (mono) and in my case, the lead (piano) almost desapears. I can take a bit of the stereo widdening in the vst, but then it loses some of the characteristics that i like in him. Is it possible to send you a sample of that piano for you see what i mean??? thank you

  • @FireWalkMusic

    @FireWalkMusic

    6 жыл бұрын

    I see. I would say that the most important thing is that the track sounds good as a whole. Some clubs have mono systems, but most have stereo these days. Also, I wouldn't worry so much about the dj both, what matters is the dance floor. You should be able to mix by listening to the low end and the hats, and seeing the structure of the track. It's quite common for instruments to almost vanish in mono. If you need feedback on the track then you can use my feedback gig on fiverr (the link is in the description). I can then take a listen to the whole track in my studio and give you some recommendations. If you have to make a hard call between making it sound bad in stereo or mono, I would just make it stereo and let it be bad in mono, since most people will listen to it in Stereo. :)

    Kick and bass should usually be in mono in your mix. When you use the stereo separation knob, you can merge them 100% to make it mono. You can also use various plugins for this. I have a video about this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aqaKmJKfdZa_l9I.html

    So does this mean that without circular panning, using your example, the volumes are 50% on the panned-to channel and 40% on the other one totaling 90% overall volume in both channels, but with circular panning the panned-to channel becomes 60% in volume and the other one 40% totaling 100% volume overall? Is that what you mean by compensation?

  • @FireWalkMusic

    @FireWalkMusic

    5 жыл бұрын

    With circular panning enabled, the overall volume of a sound remains the same in the mix when you pan. It does this by increasing the volume the more you pan to compensate for the volume loss from the panning. With linear panning (triangular) the compensation is turned off so that essentially the volume becomes quieter the more you pan, and you'll have to compensate for this volume loss manually in the mixer if you want the overall volume to remain the same for that sound. This is why you should never change panning laws in the middle of a mixing session, because it will significantly change the volume of everything in the mix.

  • @RiversideProductionz
    @RiversideProductionz6 жыл бұрын

    So does circular panning mean that it is in stereo pan mode?

  • @FireWalkMusic

    @FireWalkMusic

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it will maintain the overall volume of any sound when panning, while triangular (flat) will not, meaning that any panning will effectively cause the sound to become quieter.
