How to Clean up a Muddy Mix - Simple Mix Trick

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This technique is broken into two parts.
1) Finding the Problem Frequency
2) Finding exactly what causes the problem/imbalance so you can use your skills to fix it
Usually, you know when a mix is muddy but finding the cause of the problem can leave you scratching your head and frustrated!
Hopefully, this technique will help you find the problem frequencies so that you can focus your energy where it's needed the most.

    There’s a German saying: “What is thought unclearly is spoken unclearly”. Michael is special. I notice I hardly hear him say “uhh”...”like”...”annndd”... Just the way he shares in these tutorials reveals how he thinks. Logical, clean and intelligent thinking. Keep it up Michael 👍🏻

    He's very meticulous and calculated while remaining concise and accurate to the points. He also gives very clear supporting details to his concepts. I believe that's where most people lack is within their reasoning. It shows the difference between "I learned this so I know it's true" and "I understand this and here is why." He's not taking someone else's input. He is using his own even if it's tied to old, custom, or standard tricks within the audio engineering world. Good stuff!

    Learn about 'the standard' mixing problems that might occure when you produce music. Even though every track has its own little issues that need to be solved. but at some point your ears will have developed at a point that you'll quickly learn where these problems are and what to do about them. But this is the part that takes time and offcourse, is diffrent for everyone :). Also when mixing your own track don't forget to use a reference track that you like!

  • @xentiment6581

    @xentiment6581

    you must calibrate your ears. its the thing i spent quite some time doing. my mixing was pretty awful until i started using bunch of visualizers and and reference tracks for month or two and my mixing improved dramatically, and soon i used only 1 visualizer on master just to make sure i covered entire range and limiter to make sure nothing gets clipped.

    I've been mixing on my own for 4 years now, and have been in University for audio engineering for the past 2 years. This is the first time I've seen the muting vs soloing solution to finding problems. I'm not a pop producer or anything even close to it (I'm more of a country-rock mix engineer), but I absolutely love your tutorials! I always seem to find little tidbits of gold in them! Keep up the good work!!

    @@BIGpony777 No absolutely not. Look into it, every single billionaire says the same thing. Top companies are dropping the requirement. But if you're not a self-started and not committed and you need someone to hold your hand, consider it. Even then, you're better off teaching yourself discipline. Start with making your bed every morning, next week do 20 push up, right before your shower, add a new thing every couple of days until you have a routine. After that add a time to study what you love and go for it. Also, limit your video games, until you're good at what you love video games will always provide a quicker shot of dopamine then finishing something you love to do. When you're creating something you will not get the satisfaction until the end or a tiny bit throughout but the feeling is better, video games give you shots of dopamine when you get a kill or a win, this will get you hooked and make things you like seem boring. It's your mind wanting an easy high. I know this from personal experience. Maybe none of this pertains to you, but if it does really think about it and it might save you YEARS.

    Hi, I’ve watched a few of your vids now and just want to say thanks for your calm, reasoned presentation and clarity in these. On finding the mud, one thing I tend to go to first is the reverb bus or busses, as this can often be the culprit in the low-mids buildup. The technique you’re using here is great and would work really well to identify and then scoop out some of the offending frequencies without necessarily having to go on a hunt channel by channel as a first step. Cheers.

  • @DeRoxx4114
    @DeRoxx41146 жыл бұрын

    This video was perfectly timed, thank you! I literally just learned about reducing in that frequency range to clear up a muddy mix(something I have been having a chronically hard time with) I was mixing a heavier metal track in FL and I just started reducing everything in that range and it worked! Except the song lost all of its power and energy and I had to go back and add a bit more in that frequency range again. Especially the guitars, they just weren't muddy on their own and didn't need any reduction. I learned a lesson with that mistake. This will help me tackle muddiness in a much more logical way! Thank you for the tip!

    I've had a mix that has been muddy that I've been sitting on and I kept playing with my bass sub frequencies trying to fix it. Using this technique I immediately identified that my kick was adding crazy sub frequencies to the mix, so I moved my high pass filter up just a touch and instantly my mix was 10x cleaner. Thank you for this. You just made my mix SO much better

    I've been watching your videos for almost a month now and I can say that you are an amazing teacher, I'm 27 and I've just started using FL Studio and I can easily say that I've learned A LOT from you, you really do know how to reach out to your audience and that is the most important factor when it comes to teaching, no matter how much you know, if you can't reach your audience then your knowledge is practically useless. I would like to send my special thanks to you, and maybe even reach out to you personally, just to keep in touch one fellow musician to another, and support each other in our goals and dreams (even though I'm pretty much very new to production/mixing/mastering I've been trying to compose songs for almost 8 years now), anyway I think you are a really good teacher AND a really nice person that I find really close to my own personality. Even if you just read this comment it's still enough for me. Cheers man!

    First video I’ve searched on the topic & all I can say is that you’re a very skilled and wise teacher. I’ve produced for some years but I’m just now tackling and wrapping my head around mixing my tracks (It doesn’t seem as scary as I thought it would be)... I love your message about “locating the problem” and then using your skill to pretty much solve it. Love your approach of STARTING OFF by listening to everything as a whole and MUTING single tracks as oppose to trying to SOLO and isolate a “problem track” on its own. That is such a skilled and wise approach because I think our nature as humans is to try and immediately isolate what we think might be the problem, and that becomes our starting point. I believe you teach a very simple but skilled technique in this this video!! Your approach seems to be very effective in time. People usually recommend a specific skill/method/technique to fix a problem and they preach it as the end all be all, but I love how you acknowledged that there are multiple techniques to achieve a result. Obviously , it’s also important to learn new and different techniques, so when I watch a video and someone is preaching a mixing & mastering technique as THE way to fix a problem, I’ll take it with a grain a salt, learn, and appreciate the technique. But I acknowledge that there’s possibly 10 other techniques and tricks out there. Great video

    THANK YOU SO MUCH! I've been trying to figure out this new cover I'm making for the background music (has a lot of things going on) and had way too much bass and too much high and not enough mid and this weird frequency in the string VST was distorting the frequency on the trumpet line. Finally got it all leveled out and now sounding clean!
