As someone who has been unhappily married for a long time and has been happily married for a long time (I'm old) I have one thing to say. You can be far happier single than married to the wrong person. I stayed in a bad marriage for way too long because I didn't know that. While being married can bring love, companionship and purpose into your life it can also bring dread, isolation and hopelessness. There is no virtue in staying in a bad marriage. If your marriage is bad, fix it or end it. Staying unhappy the rest of your life is an awful choice.

The secret to being happily married is not needing to be happily married. I.e. you should be a 'complete person' all on your own, happy with yourself and with your life. If you happen to meet someone else who is a complete person, and you find that you are happier when they are around than when they are not - then you get married, and that marriage will last. Yesterday was my 24th wedding anniversary, and I adore my wife just as much as the day I married her. I get the impression she still adores me as well. If you are just getting married to check the box off your list of things you think you should do, your marriage will most likely fail. If you are just getting married because you feel incomplete as a person, your marriage will most likely fail. If you are just getting married to have kids, your marriage will most likely fail.

three big mistakes in marriage : 1) Not knowing the person you are marrying and jumping into marriage too soon( it happens in my country India where marriages are arranged in 1-2 meetings) .2) not budgeting the marriage each occasion, event has a cost factor not including that in marriage is expensive( the country I belong to the cost is shared with parents which puts dent to self respect of the married couple and quality of their life) 3) Not having prenuptial agreement in place almost all legal structures in various countries go against break the marriage but you are two individuals who can exercise your right to go in different directions anytime. It is more important for males because most of the laws are pro-women.

Was married for 32 years. She divorced me and left me broke. Took my children, my life’s work and my self worth. It’s been 7 years, I rebuilt my life, I’m worth more today than I was when she bankrupted me, I have zero stress, wake up happy every morning. Bottom line, I’ve never been happier as I am right now. 2 people living on top of each other 24/7 is just not natural, hence divorces galore across the world. Life is too short and it should belong to you alone and nobody else. Stay single, prosper and stay happy. This is coming from a 65 year old man who has been there, done that and now doing it differently in a happier way.

You should understand that not all women are such egoistic to not want to be married from a man's perspective. But the legislation system favors women towards some issues and lets them put their own interest before children's needs (need for the biological father), let alone caring about their husbands and so. This is a flaw of society by not addressing well the trajectory towards equality...

Before becoming red pilled i was convinced by my friends and family members that i was missing out unlike them who are all married and now i realize that it's quite the opposite. Almost all married men are living in quiet desperation and they unconsciously try to put marriage and women on a pedestal and when they have convinced others that they are missing out it makes them feel better about there marriages. When you become red pilled and those same men can see how happy you are and that you do not envy them at all they start to become jealous of your lifestyle.

And yet I had three therapists in a row who heard me say “I don’t want to get married,” and we’d spend multiple sessions arguing back-and-forth I’d explain how much I value my freedom and not being tied down. They relentlessly said “yeah, but you don’t wanna be fifty and look back with regrets of not getting married.” To which I’d say “…and I don’t wanna be fifty and look back and regret marrying the wrong person” To which THEY said “but you’ll never find somebody who’s perfect. Companionship is the main thing to look for” To which **I** said “if nobody’s gonna be perfect, then why should I sacrifice my time, space, breathing space, money, energy, possibly even health for somebody who I’m not happy with?” 🙄 and they’d say “you’re only unhappy because you’re focusing on superficial things that fade anyways. You’re focused on attraction. You need to focus on kindness and companionship” Needless to say I stopped seeing them, but let me tell you it was draining and disheartening that it took me years to find a therapist who wants me to live MY LIFE and not the life he sets out for me

Amber1999 Because there are no strategies. Either it works or it doesn't. For 2 people, with 2 different personalities and backgrounds to be able to live and function together for decades is extremely rare, and getting married won't help that at all. A marriage is nothing but a celebration and a title. It has literally no effect on your overall relationship, and its about time men, but perhaps women especially, started realizing this.

toasteh Very good analysis. One thing you forgot is marriage is just a financial contract and financial insurance if divorce occurs. Governments want it by providing tax credits incentives, but the breadwinner still financially support the other after divorce unless a prenup is sign. People cheat in marriages so it's not a promise commitment that are kept, and you don't need a marriage to make a long term commitment either. ;)

I could have paid some reliable worker friends to help me but I didn't finish that RN. RN's get paid well. He had joked at first 16 years ago that I would be working while he would be sitting home taking care of the church needs. But he pulled me out of school (one more semester, I would have been done) and made me go to work as an LPN, which limited where I could work (100+ miles away). and limited my earnings. And now we are stuck because he was never responsible with money. SO yes I should have gotten my RN> We would both have been in a better position. ( no children, We married in our 40's). it was pretty much a girl telling you what causes her and other women to break up with their better halves. shes just saying if you both dont give up on the sexual attraction which initiated your "acquaintance" via going to the gym and try to make your life about the commonality of it (like your kids, pets, house, whatever) you will have a longer and healthier relationship. she also says that chicks dig it when you help them out so fucking do it. its not worth her starting an argument over. however, this was all said with a bias opinion from someone whose relationship worked out because both parties seemed to have pursued it. there is no telling what will happen if the relationship was started for ill reasons like money, strictly physical appeal & what not. then all this "advice" doesn't apply.

This is very well presented. Nowadays people treat marriages like work. Don't leave one until you secure another. Some people can stay single & while others can't stay married. Nobody wants to be alone all the time save for some introverts that have more than just introversion to cope with. In all, we don't know why some really make it. They say if many gave it another week, many marriages would have been saved. Nobody has time for that.

TED has really lowered its standards. This presentation was less about informing and more about entertaining with comic relief. I kept waiting for the "meat" of the presentation - some deeper reason to make the marriage commitment. All I heard were glib statistics - make sure your husband is fatter than you, exercise, don't hang around too many envious divorced people, don't watch romantic comedies, etc. Then she finished it by bragging about her husband. Yeah, the guy's hot, but what is that supposed to teach me about marriage?

Actually, I believe she hid one of the key reasons marriages last. Focus on the positives. But I don't mean in general like she referred to but specifically being thankful and telling them so about all the ways your spouse enriches your lives. Every. Day. When you are thankful for that special someone, all of their faults don't seem so huge, in fact, they don't seem to bother you very much at all. Not saying that you don't like them sometimes. But you like them so much more. And I think it's more important that spouses like each other and are friends, then to be "in love". Now maybe I am not an expert. This coming day before Valentine's Day is our 19th. Not very long. But I think positivity as thankfulness is a very big key.

Are you sure that you're just not hating because it says things that you don't like? I think that the wife being skinnier is true, based on my own experience. I've seen from my own parents and from their friends that marriages that don't end in divorce have a skinny wife. The husband didn't always gain a lot of weight like my dad, but the wives were usually skinny. But, it was at least 1 out of 3 where the husband got a big belly at some point in marriage. Yet, marriages with fat or obese women married to skinny men tend to end in divorce initiated by the wife. I have also seen this growing up with my uncles. It could be the fact that fat women tend to get married to poor men, or that fat women are harder to please. But, I think that there is something to learn here.

You don't understand the problem. It has NOTHING to do with the people. It has everything to do with the legal system that has been changed to the point where a man has NO chance to keep the marriage because it is NOT up to him and 75 to 80% of the divorces are by the woman. For a man to get married it is like writing a blank check on a contract that he cannot change but she can change her part of the contract at any time for any reason and without explaining why. NOT a good deal for the man.

People have complicated the whole marriage progam. Marriage is the legal binding of 2 people to explore without boundries themselves and each other. Very few couples actually understand this concept and thus grow stale with ingrained beliefs and traditions. Finding that life partner is a huge challenge, finding the ''she'll or he'll do'' is what mostly happens. A healthy mind explores, a sick mind is a closed operation.

Through a bad experience I've learned that marriage is not great, especially if you are the one that has the most to lose financially. Marriage actually is a legal contract in which you co mingle your assets and debts into one. For every dollar you make the other person gets half. If the other person racks up huge credit debt on your cards you are responsible for half even if you had nothing to do with the spending. You are better off living with a person but not getting married. Just my two cents.

She was making the point that most people have misconceptions on what marriage actually is. People believe marriage is just happiness for ever. That it means not fighting, loving spending every moment together, that you will never have problems. The truth is, you will have all of those, but your attitude is important. If you are negative you can't be happy. Your attitude plays a huge role on how you perceive situations and thus affects your level of satisfaction. Obviously this does not apply in abusive situations as that's a bad situation no matter your attitude.

This has to be one of the least interesting Ted talks I've ever watched (and not because of the subject). The speaker doesn't bring any real information to bear on the subject; she merely performs a rehearsed comedy routine while walking the audience through the findings of singular, outlying studies. Real science is about verification through repetition, and the practice of holding one singular study's findings up as "science says that..." is corrosive not only to scientific endeavor but society as a whole. I think we need to make sure this type of performance finds no sure footing in the world of Ted talks.

Because you know every person in the world and you are the ultimate authority on relationships? Look up Mark Gungor's Marriage Seminar. It was much funnier and practical than this. I'm in my second marriage. First was Ok for a year, and then he got drinking and meth using and killed himself with two strokes from meth damage. I loved him but it took me many years to accept that he probably never loved me. He was Fetal Alcohol damaged. My second hubby is sweet and funny but a child, but I love him.

Hah! What a man should know about marriage is the approximate 50% divorce rate and that women file over 70% of divorces. That seems a bit low to me though since with just about every friend or coworker I've known who divorced, the woman initiated it. To me that means if I got divorced, chances are it wouldn't have been my choice. Then I'm out and being bankrupted by child support and legal bills until I start looking around for a nice high bridge to jump off. Nope! I looked at that situation and decided (17 years ago, back in 1997) that I wouldn't marry. And without marriage I paid off my first home in 11 years, bought a nice place on a half acre and I did it all on mechanic wages. My life is ultra low stress and there isn't a single line on my forehead even though I'm a few months short of 50. Staying single is just a better, lower stress, more prosperous, more stable, more peaceful way to live.

Women are illogical thus treacherous. If their feelings change, then their promises of honor become moot and irrelevant. Feminism has spoiled them - demanding equal rights, yet expecting different treatment: taking off months for a baby without professional consequence. Demanding complete control of their reproduction, yet when choosing to have babies, demanding that fathers pay. When choosing to kill their babies, demanding that fathers have no say. Believing that sitting on their asses doing nothing and contributing nothing entitles them to 1/2 their husbands' assets.

I know someone who is one their 3rd divorce and their 21. I think marriage is important for society and there is a right way to do it without being totally hopeless. btw im single.

Marcara081 it's not involuntary if both sides say yes to a marriage. if you are heterosexual like I am mainly talking about the state has little say in your marriage. sure the state gives tax breaks but the real reason for this is the state assumes you will have children and those children if raised right could be lucrative tax payers for the state in the future. I believe one of the purposes for marriage is to provide a sense of security to children if kids know their parents can leave each other at any time they will most certainly be stressed every time their parents fight which happens in every marriage.

Then you said if you are too independent or spiritual then marriage is too hard for you? You are contradicting yourself. Are you FOR marriage or AGAINST it?? I honestly cannot tell what you're saying. What about that bit about being ugly LoL Are you saying ugly people can't get married? LOL
