I've raced dirt bikes for 30 years with no knee braces on and recently decided to get a pair and I do not notice a difference at all. I agree that in certain circumstances bracing things causes weakness like weight belts or taped ankles but a knee brace doesn't limit range of motion it only prevents unnatural range of motion that you shouldn't be doing anyway so biomechanically it's not weakening anything. I really hope people critically think about this because his point of view doesn't match the biomechanics at all.

The whole neck brace deal is crazy what people think. I’ve worn a Leatt one for years and still do. I had my worse crash in 2009 and my legs came over my head from behind and went into a ditch and into a tree stump. I had laceration to my liver and vertebrae damage, for sure I think I would have been paralysed without the extra support the brace and leatt chest protector gave me on impact. Its never restricted my movement whilst riding I feel and it certainly hasn’t made me crash.

Both devices are properly adjusted and have already been useful since I am still working on fundamentals and finding traction limitations. Maybe once my skill level changes I might ditch both, but for now they seem to help with my confidence. I appreciate Ryan's insight, coaching and what he's done for the sport.

I started just a little younger (40's) and took the same approach. I've just ditched the neck brace but can't see/feel any restriction from the knee braces at all so keeping them. Adopt and train the toes in, butt out, straight back, loose arms riding position ASAP. It'll be harder to change later and you'll be safer through better control. If the neck brace stops you adopting and maintaining that riding position, ditch it.

Love ya Ryno, but crashing is inevitable. Reducing the probability of crashing makes sense, but I'm not sure what % of the crashes could actually be prevented by removing braces. I do know that I want braces on my joints WHEN I crash or make the mistake. I accept your assumption that bracing increases risk of fractures. It's probably also fair to accept the assumption (and the data) that braces prevent damage to fragile joints. I'll take the increased leg fracture risk all day long in exchange for a lower risk of a blown out knee. I say this as someone who has suffered a compound fractured femur (unbraced by the way).

  • @JusticeSather

I appreciate what Ryno has to say about Braces. I've been wearing every piece of equipment to protect myself since day one. I recently broke my neck brace and have been riding without it since and it has completely freed up my movement. I can see forward and get my body position right, it's so nice. One thing I will not remove are my knee braces. I get what Ryno says about Prevention vs. Cure, but I'm not at a level that would require me to have 100% free movement. I’m a Doctor of Physical Therapy. It doesn’t matter what this guy thinks is logical. The objective evidence is clear on this topic: Bracing does not create muscle weaknesses or imbalances, it actually does the opposite. It strengthens the muscles, increases functional mobility, and provides stability to decrease further injury. If this guy had a basic understanding of anatomy and biomechanics, he would see that his explanation is actually not logical at all.

That's not what he's saying. The brace works. He's saying you're taking away mobility and the opportunity to ride the motorcycle more effectively and safely overall when you decide to use them. More control means less chance of injury, too. That's a given. For the average Joe, I think they're awesome! I personally don't like using them and hate feeling restricted. I feel a difference when I ride in a comfortable position on the bike. To each their own however. We're not in a sport where safety is promised even with proper gear.

Once the area is built up enough to stabilize the affected area loose the brace.

I respect Ryno but the knee brace thing is ridiculous. The sport is already bad enough with some gnarly injuries and to tell people don’t use this protective equipment is silly. ALL of the guys riding now especially the top guys wear knee braces. And they are perfectly fine with them and the braces have gotten better and better and don’t nearly restrict the movement that bad. You can follow his advice and have perfect technique and unrestricted but what happens when someone else crash’s and collects you in it and you’ve broken your knee or legs causing major damage or damage to a previous injury because you throw the knee braces off. Especially when you have average weekend joes that take this advice and mess their knees or legs up. If it happens remember who told you not to wear it. Crashing is inevitable, and like I said I like Ryno but this is silly.

If I didn’t have my neck brace on, I would most definitely have a broken back or neck. It took the impact and put it onto my shoulders instead of my neck. I also wear CTI2 knee braces and I feel so much more comfortable with them, than without them. But like anything, to each their own. Just thought I’d put my two cents in. It’s frustrating to see how many people call Ryno “crazy”. What he’s saying makes sense. Does he take a harder stance on this topic than I do? Sure. But I’ve had countless students approach me in the middle of class and say “hey aj, I can’t see anymore with my neck brace on because of the position you’re putting me in, can I try riding without it?”, or “hey aj, I can’t feel my bike that well with my big knee braces on, can I try some of the Tp199 pads that you wear to see if it helps me grip the bike?”. I’ve torn my acl with a full blown brace on. I now wear knee pads because I feel more safe and like I have more control. Therefore the likelihood of me making a mistake or crashing is much less. Same theory could potentially be debated with neck braces. I think it’s a good topic to be discussed and I think the truth may lie somewhere in the middle. More people should listen to Ryno though, I can count on one hand how many people on this planet have as much knowledge as he does when it comes to our sport.

I understand the neck brace thing because it absolutely limits your mobility and affects body position, but a knee brace doesn't affect any of that, it's dumb to not use it. In my case it even helps me squeeze the bike more because of the extra leverage caused by the thickness of the braces.

Great to see someone in the game with a different perspective, Ryno has some interesting alternative views. I folded my knee back and broke my Femur and top of Fib, torn ligaments crushed arteries the works! Decided first thing I would do when I could ride again was get knee braces. My ortho was also a professor who had worked with knee braces and was into MX....he 100% convinced me to never wear them. He called them $1000 security blankets, basically people bought into the marketing about "natural movement" and "prevention" when in reality they did neither, unlikely to prevent ligament damage and any major hit can cause a broken Femur...potentially far worse outcome than a knee reconstruction.

Travis did the first double flip with a neck brace and body armour. It is quite likely that studies have been (by large, well funded companies) done and one can possibly calculate the increase and decreases in probability of both crashing and resultant injury respectively to a significant degree of accuracy.

I went through multiple braces and I bought some expensive highly supportive braces but my knee pain persisted. It felt like tendon/ligament pain. What I ended up doing is trying to not wear it at all and I theorized that my accessory muscles surrounding my knee strengthened causing the pain to subside. Also there are some days where I have walked 14 miles on a shift. Its not causal walking either its fast paced walking with little time to sit and relax. My nursing books have also said nurses are at increased risk for musculoskeletal disorders. We are the ones picking the obese people up and it kills our joints.

Does his idea that bracing something makes it weaker apply to more than just the human body? If that was the case I would assume bracing radiators is pointless. I think if you protect the knee, which is a more vulnerable part of the leg, then it allows the stronger points such as the femur absorb the energy. It takes much more to break a femur than it does to twist or break a knee.

As a PT, yes, any time someone uses any type of bracing, they are relying on that brace, tape, cast, splint, or whatever, and the muscles in the area shut down or change their firing pattern because the movement that is allowed is not longer natural to the body. There are indications for people with recent injury or surgery to use these devices, but many times it should be short term, and to decrease the amount or atrophy as well as stiffness (adaptive muscle shortening), usually the brace should be removed during certain (safe) activities. The body isn’t meant to be immobilized for long periods or while performing dynamic movements. This applies to bracing at all joints in the body. You have some neck pain that feels better with a soft collar on, you better not be wearing that collar for all hours of the day and for long periods, or you are going to end up worse than where you started. Same thing for a simple ankle brace for a sprained ankle. The list goes on and on!

There's a difference between braces that provide continual support, and braces that just sit there doing nothing until there's an out of range movement, right? But if I have a neck brace just sitting on my shoulders not even touching my helmet or my neck, how is that going to make my neck weaker?

When I first started riding I wore the shitty 40 dollar knee caps, found them shit and bought knee braces, took them off because they were too restrictive, wore no knee protection for a while then bought the TP199 knee guards and they were still really restrictive compared to no knee protection but I wore them anyway, then I recently bought some braces again and they're much better than the TP199 knee guards. So much more grip on the bike, and the knee guards had no side protection so my knees would get bruised from gripping the bike after I rode, doesn't happen with the knee braces and they make me more confident on the bike knowing I have all that extra grip. The braces don't allow me to get as close to the bike but they grip so much better and it's so much easier on my legs because I don't need to exert nearly as much force to grip the bike properly. I actually listened to Ryno first about not wearing knee braces a little after I started riding, however recently when I bought braces I couldn't believe how much easier it was to grip the bike. Not to mention all the extra protection that knee braces offer. Anyway, sounds like I'm in the minority here judging from the comments, but I just thought I'd add my experience testing pads vs braces vs nothing. Same movement limitations with pads and braces, except your knees don't get as close to the bike with braces which for me is a positive, more movement without any knee protection but not enough to justify not wearing any imo. What Ryno said about braces causing a crash so you should not wear them and wear pads because you won't have the same crash in pads I pretty much said word for word way before I heard anyone say this (podcast was the first time I'd head someone else say it) but I proved myself wrong when I tried braces again. I think this whole take off all your protective gear to go faster movement that Ryno has started is incredibly stupid for the average rider. Sure, if you're slightly faster wearing less protective and you're a pro then you need to save as much time as possible but the average guy should just not risk an extra injury to chop 0.2 seconds off their lap time. I've rode without a helmet and I'm way faster without it, but I'm not gonna not wear a helmet to go faster.

I have to disagree with Ryno. Ppl eventually will wipe out. Also ppl that exercise and or train their muscles wearing a knee brace is not making their muscles weaker for the 40 mins they are wearing them. My friend if he didn’t wear his knee braces his knee would have been completely destroyed and the whole leg would have went completely backwards. But he did break the femur and the doc said that was better than the knee completely destroyed. I always exercised and weight trained and the ppl I raced obviously didn’t or not near as much. After the race they would be gasping for air where as I wasn’t. We would be top 3 even guys after that I would talk to would be the same. Was curious why Hughes is no longer with Coldenhoff - did a google search and, duh - Covid caused Hughes to have to return to U.S. Additionally, watched an interview with Coldenhoff, he had nothing but high praise for Hughes and can't wait until they can work together, again.

When training in the gym what you brace gets weaker but on race day you wear braces so your ACLs stay intact. Dont wait til after theyre gone. This mans a fool

I tore both my ACL 25 years ago, right when knee brace became popular. I tried one and it didn't fit right so I quit wearing one. I haven't had any knee problems. For the same reason as not wearing a brace I'm not getting a covid vax either.

@Jonathan Spier I think he’s genuinely delusional, I almost feel bad for him. Gypsy is sitting there like “Oh my fuck, the content!”

You train the knees with resistance for strength, and when you compete you wear the braces. The equipment, including helmets and boots interferes with movement of course, but you adapt, and the same is true with everything.

I like the philosophy that Ryan Hughes has and I can’t argue with him because he’s so assertive but what’s the difference between saying the rider pushed harder because he felt safer or why wear a helmet because he feels more aware and senses the feel of speed without a helmet, yes neck braces are “new” to the game in comparison to knee braces but your comparing riders who have come out of accidents in wheel chairs to people who didn’t come out in wheels chairs wearing completely different gear, compare wheel chair to wheel chair for the same situation, having the same type of accident without the same safety equipment, same speed, same track, same jump, same bikes, same weight, same build, same physical fitness, same ages and so on, there are soooo many variables that make a big difference but I can’t argue with Ryan because more mobility, more ability and more agility helps 100%, you need to make sure your as physically fit as possible, as comfortable and as free as possible but safety equipment reduces over flexing, over rotation, over movement and so on, but you can’t argue with trying to reduce too much kinetic energy and that’s what science is. Believe what you want, facts or philosophy but science tests more than imagination.

I'm a big guy 6'3, wish I could have had a few sessions with ryno when I was racing. Always felt physically uncomfortable and huge on a bike

Partially depends on anatomy. I wear knee pads that have hinges. Not full on knee braces.
