What winter in Colorado is *really* like... 😦

I've really enjoyed helping people who want to move to Colorado. And some really common questions I've gotten since I started making videos for newbie Coloradans is "How bad is the winter REALLY in Colorado?" or "What's the snow like? Is it really that bad?" or "What kind of car do I need to live in Colorado in the winter?"
So in this video I give you the in-depth scoop of what winter is really like in Colorado! I also give you tips on how you can prepare for the Colorado winter and snow if you've truly never lived in a climate that has things like "winter" (🤓) and what kinds of clothes to wear. I'll also tell you what kinds of cars people lean towards when it comes to the Colorado winter and also the most important thing about driving in Colorado in the winter.
I hope this video helps you prepare for your move (or your trip) to Colorado and please let me know if you have any other questions about Colorado in the comments below. I'm happy to make as many videos as y'all need about moving to this crazy, beautiful state! 😉

    Thanks for the video Genevieve. It is a lighter snow in Colorado. I live on the East Coast and we get the dreaded Nor'easter. The snow can be wet and heavy depending on the exact track of these unpredictable storms...Peace..

    I am curious about the rain in Colorado. I live in Austin TX and I am looking to move somewhere where there is more rain as I am tired of the lack of rain in the summer. It doesn't rain here much overall although in the winter it is more common. The summer is long and hot here and without rain it is hard to get through it. I found that Denver has only 14 inches of rain per year which is much less than in Austin that has 35 inches per year and it rarely rains here ! I don't understand how there is so much snow here (60 inches per year ! ) while there is very little rain. I guess the snow would make up for the rain as I love snow and I miss it here. To compare Austin has 0 inches of snow per year however in reality there is one or 2 days of a little drizzle and that's it

    @@GenevieveClough Yes, I think Colorado & Utah are quite similar. When I lived in Colorado though I was amazed how FAST it could turn from sunshine to a torrential rain downpour then right back to sunshine. * I just commented back to you on your video on Alpha Lipoic Acid too when you replied to this video, serendipitous, eh?!! 🙋‍♀️💜

    I’ve lived in Colorado my whole life, In the Denver metro area. And I hardly ever break out my winters coat and boots during the snow season just bc it gets warmer a few days after a snow storm. I usually wear a jacket and tennis shoes when it snows and it’s usually fine. Obviously that is different depending on where you live in Colorado. I have Subaru Forester and I love it, in the snow it does an amazing job

    I get a lot of "Colorado" education on your Vlog. It helps because I have plans to build a second home there. You could say I am a native Californian. I made the first step in July 2020 acquiring land in Wright's Mesa. I like the idea of a small acreage organic hobby farming.

    Tires meant for snow typically do not harden as fast or at all compared to regular tires, THAT is why you should get tires suited to your climate! Subarus are lovely, I love mine, but I agree, if I don't put the right tires on that baby, she's gonna STRUGGLE. Not as hard as other vehicles, but still. The thing with Subarus and Toyotas is (I believe this is accurate, someone please correct me if not) that they are manufactured in the same facility if made in the US. Toyota also has a 20% collaborative stake in the Subaru company, so.... I wonder if that has anything to do with both their abilities to function well in Colorado. They just feed off one another's good ideas and engine development, plus, they're kind of vested in each other 🤷‍♀️. Way to go, Toyburu?.... Subayota? 🤣

    Love this video! I just moved here two months ago and everything you said was spot on! The tire situation is so true. lol. One thing I would add is to make sure folks have the proper snow clearing toys/devices. For example, car scrapper and shovel, these are things I have had to buy since moving from TX. Overall, my husband and I have found the winter to be beautiful and pleasant.

    Hi Genevieve! Yes I used to live In Illinois at the northern tip, 10 minutes away from Wisconsin. The snows were. very heavy and it could snow a lot sometimes. And usually it will snow at least once a week. Yes it would melt but the freeze again and so there was always black ice. And front wheel or 4x4 is ideal for up there. The rear wheel like Mustangs for example would typically be summer vehicles and covered during the winter. The salt eats up the cars.. btw I have a Subaru and I love mine!! And I live in Texas. Illinois was not for me. Not very much sun in the winter causing that seasonal disorder. Awful! Anyway. Colorado sounds nice. I love the warmth here tho🙃 good video!!

    Great video! I definitely had some preconceived (and inaccurate) notions and assumptions of what your winters were like so this was very helpful. What cities/towns would you say are the most mild in Colorado? I'm sure everywhere gets cold and snow to a certain degree but I wasn't sure if there were cities/towns with milder winters.

  • @GenevieveClough

    @GenevieveClough

    3 жыл бұрын

    Honestly it’s about elevation in terms of what’s milder. The higher into the mountains you go, the more cold/snow you’re gonna get. All of the front range is fairly similar in terms of weather patterns though sometimes a storm might hit the north a little harder than the south or likewise. That said I do think the lower parts of southern Colorado are probably the most “mild” but not a hugely noticeable amount.

    No such thing as all seasons for winter in colorado if you really want to be prepared. Set of snow tires are a must. If you dont want to be part of the many daily accidents on our highways. All seasons get too hard and take longer to stop during freezing temps.

  • @GenevieveClough

    I’ve lived in Colorado most of my life and me and my family have always had good all season tires and have *never* had to get snow tires. But we live in the low lands and not the mountains! None of us have ever had accidents in the snow. Good tread on all season tires has been great for us. But I agree if you live in mountains or are traveling often through the snow in the mountains you probably need snow tires!

    Snow chances 9 months of the year gets old.... also winter days are "mild' but the altitude and dry air means temperatures drop like a rock after the sun sets, so plan on freezing cold nights from late September till early May.

    I am a native and I absolutely dislike the snow ❄️. I think it’s cold. I dislike driving in it. The roads don’t get cleaned as good as they do in the surrounding areas. I feel like I can’t do anything because it’s slippery. The weather is really bipolar. I think Global warming seems like winter type has gotten worse. 4 wheel drive is not 4 wheel stop.

    I love frozen nature! But it does truly get weird when it drags far into "spring"! Expectation is the root of all disappointment. And I will lose my mind if I have to live through another OH winter. Hearing the apocalyptic warnings about the record snow in Denver recently, I was skeptical that it would really cause a hiccup for you all. One thing I wonder on roads is if CDOT and/or cities treat roads with salt? Or cinders? Here in the Midwest, if snow is in the forecast, road crews slather the roads with brine or rock salt (preemptively, and during)and it avoids almost any closure or delay. From what you said in the video, Denver drivers can expect to be on snowy surfaces and not depend on salt trucks to save the day?

  • @victoriat8922

    @victoriat8922

    2 жыл бұрын

    Salt trucks in cities are common, but they won't go down smaller streets a lot of the time. Also, snow can still occasionally form a layer on top of all but major roads. Fortunately snow never lasts too long here except during seriously cold patches that we get once or twice every five years or so.
