What Wedding Dresses Around the World Look Like

You are cordially invited to the wedding dress episode of “Around the World.” Great Big Story senior producer Beryl Shereshewsky talks to seven dressmakers in seven countries to learn about the special dresses they make for brides in their communities. The craftsmanship, tradition and love that goes into these gorgeous creations is truly amazing. Among the dresses featured: an elaborately beaded Native American southern Cheyenne buckskin dress from Oklahoma; a kente dress handwoven in red, yellow and green, the national colors of Ghana; and in Sweden, a traditional black taffeta folk wedding dress known as a vanga dress.

In this video, the headpiece is the more simple type. But traditionally, it doesn't come in one piece. Each ornament is stuck one by one to hair bun and it's much heavier. Iconic indeed

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die". BUT, mercy said "I dont want to give them what they deserve. I don't want them to be cut off from Me. I love them despite all they have done/will do against Me. I want to give My children another chance. I want them to come home and live in My love again". And love said "Jesus, God's Son, came down as a Man, our representative, suffering every temptation, pain and struggle we have ever faced, yet without sin. He took all our sins (past/present/ even future) to the cross and then crucified EVERY ONE on our behalf. Justice was paid on the cross so that we can be free from Hell's punishment, experience Gods mercy of forgiveness of sin and live in His love. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (turn away from our sin and pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through Him (not ourselves as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to obey His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and ask Him to help us in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, or struggling or doubtful, simply be honest and tell Him that. He is not intimidated by ANY sin or struggle you are facing. ANY. He hears and will answer. If we pray for Him to come in, regardless of the condition, then He will. NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. If you have any questions let me know x

Further more there is a drastic different between Chinese culture and the Indigenous native culture of people from the Northern American continents. It makes total sense that they chose Indigenous culture that has been recorded in the history of North America for many years over people from China. The Indigenous culture and ethnic groups are in their own culture and they shouldn't be considered to be a part of a countries culture that is hundreds of miles away

Indian wedding dress shown here was so underrated..... No bride will wear such a sober dress. Indian bridal dress is full of embroidery, sequence, semi precious stones, gold and silver thread embroidery...... Heavily embroidered veil, skirt and blouse..... Every thing form head to toe is grand and over the top....... The one showed here was very plain and simple.... And most suited for bride's friends or family members.

I am an american female and went to Japan to marry my Japanese boyfriend. I had never seen a Japanese wedding, and ours was VERY traditional. I wore the big wig, white face, and huge Kimono. Therefore I commented so that the people who might not be aware of our country’s diversity can at least get some idea. Thank you.

I know the many, many, many hours that went into each of these dresses, from the stunning Native American beadwork to the fabulous handwoven kente cloth. His loom is unlike any I've ever seen. As an Indonesian Minangnese woman, they nailed the wedding dress! Overall it's pretty accurate, though it's a little different. We don't usually wear modern high heels like the ones in the video (instead, black/crimson-gold shoes with wide short heels), the fingers are usually painted red with 'pacar' that colors the whole top knuckles (not just the nails), and the dress is generally crimson in most Minang lands. But this version is also really beautiful :)

As a person who has learned to sew and create my own clothing out of necessity, I always love seeing photos of all kinds of different clothing, especially gowns, prom gowns, event gowns/dresses, and wedding gowns. These people are very talented, and have their head in the right space. Their bottom line of most importance aspects is the feelings of the bride. They care most that the bride feels beautiful, and comfortable in their creation they make for them. Keeping your head and heart in a good place will flow through you and be detectable in what you are creating. These folks make beautiful gowns. 💜

I honestly don't know how the girls wear them as they can weigh many stones in weight. I had a fairly conservative ivory wedding gown and thought that was heavy enough, especially with the hooped underskirt.

I am Ghanaian, and the bridal wear Ghanaian women go with is the kente cloth sewn into “kaba and sleet” ( kaba - a top designed according to the bride’s preference ; sleet - a long skirt that fits around the hips and thighs) or the kente is sewn into a beautiful gown. Others choose to go very traditional by wrapping the kente cloth around them. There’s lots of gold and jewellery. Traditional beads are also worn on the bride. What was shown here is an attire most Ghanaian women would rather wear to church.

That's because it's not a typical British wedding dress, that lady only makes dresses for travellers, mostly Irish Travellers but also Romanies. Those dresses are tacky and overly blinged up for a non gypsy bride. She doesn't look happy as the dress weighs more than she does, the dress maker was the focus in the UK Documentary series 'My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding' every traveller girl wants a bigger and blingier dress than her friends, sisters, cousins etc. The dresses are usually very uncomfortable to wear all day, but still they do it. The more traditional white wedding dress worn in UK and US is not such an old tradition either, Queen Victoria was the first to wear a white wedding gown and before that any colour was used and a wedding dress would not have been designed to wear for one day only, it would be more like 'sunday best' worn on Sundays and special occasions.
