Crazy thing is about half of them are never reset and still retain personal information such as financial documents, family photos, etc. While I always format the drives for other uses, if their information got into the wrong hands, it could be dangerous. Also, I hope they made backups of their data lol.

I have to come in and short this thread out. HDD, the mechanical type require a minimum of 7 complete random overwrites to be considered legally wiped. This will render all data useless as the platter will have had any magnetic traces removed. Flash storage works a little differently but it also has a half life, when the gate empties on that section of flash to signal an empty block it doesn't entirely discharge some current will remain, not enough for normal drive operation to consider it populated but certainly enough for some retrieval tools to consider it populated. After formatting flash media allow the power to the drive to die and leave it sitting. This will further degrade the remaining power from almost empty gates, the gate is open so it will leak out. Then 1 random overpass to ensure no filetable information got restored and that all gates are completely randomised, if you do not randomise the drive only format it, some tools will restore parts of the drive. So HDD, min 7 random overpasses Flash, Format, Power drain, 1 Random overpass If anyone manages to restore this they should win a nobel peace prize.

Just wipe your HHD/SSD/Storage Medium and then sell it. That will remove stored data from your storage medium completely. Deleting and formating actually does not delete your data. It just removes your data from the partition table. It does not delete it because it will be waste of time to overwrite your data with null charachters in storage. You can just make that space available to overwrite new data. So! wiping overwrite every block of sotrage so that not any trace of previous data left. Reformating multiple time is not going to you in any way. You will be just deleteing only partition table again and again. So just wipe it or overwrite your whole storage meduim with new data if you wants to waste your time.
