What to know before going to a TEMAZCAL | My experience healing the mind, body, & soul

What to know before going to a temazcal: A temazcal is a healing ceremony that uses heat and the 4 elements (water, earth, air, and fire) to provide medicinal benefits to the mind, body, & soul. In this video, I do my best to share what I've learned in the experience, my personal story, and my tips for anyone seeking a temazcal experience.
Medically, it is used to help with nearly any ailment. The intense sweating boosts the release of toxins to help you heal from just about anything. A cold or flu, chronic pain, allergies, stress, depression, child birth and more. When a woman goes into labor, the midwife, husband and any other children the couple may have crawl in to the fiery hot temazcal to join the mother in solidarity and in healing.
Spiritually, participants can experience a rebirth and explore their connection to their ancestors. The healing benefits go beyond the physical, but also mental and emotional. The temazcal guides mentioned to us that it is common to cry and speak whatever it is you would like to heal from your body and soul.
We were told this healing practice serves as a natural anti-depressant and anti-stress remedy, and during these times, it turned out to be a real dose of fresh air.

    Thanks for taking the time to watch the video. One of my goals is to practice being able to talk about my mental health out loud, and if you watch the video, you’ll notice I still struggle with it. But the reason I want to share is #1 to express solidarity with anyone struggling with anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns, and #2 to help normalize how we talk about mental health. I have a great team of medical providers that are helping to address my mental and physiological health concerns, but the healing process is dauntingly slow. I am taking medication and doing regular therapy. On top of that, I decided to try this temazcal experience to see if it would help. I hope that you are taking the steps to take care of you in all ways that you deserve. I know it’s hard and dirty work, but I promise you are worth it.

    Crazy experience! great awareness understanding your feelings while you were in the temazcal. I definitely want to give it a try. You brought up an interesting subject that resonates with me and reminds me of my own experiences dealing with chronic pain and mental health. Since this video is 2 yrs old now, I would guess that maybe your stress has gone down a lot due to your exciting adventures and some of the tension that you carry has been lifted. Throughout my own journey I learned about how the mind and the body communicates with each other thru tension. Furthermore, when we experience trauma in our lives, the mind will store that energy in the form of tension and place it in specific areas: neck, mouth. throat, back, chest and/or hips, etc. Different for different people. What helped me a lot was attending a silent meditation in Thailand. For 11 days I sat in silent meditation without talking and without any stimulations from digital and minimal external sources. There was yoga every morning and they feed you a veggie diet. As I did the work, with only myself and traveled inward, I faced all of my demons and my shadow self. Slowly, I recognized the ball of tension rested within my psyche. With no distractions, I had to face myself and feel the pains that suddenly were awakening from within. You recognize the anxiety rising and you continue to do the work. I found love and joy in all of that darkness. Slowly, the tangled ball of yarn started to loosen and release. One strand at a time, till it started feeling lighter. A weight was lifted from my shoulders. This was 2016 and my chronic back pains has not came back. I revisit the same meditation retreat every two years since then, and I'm due up to go again soon. You both seem like the type that would be interested in something like that, if you haven't already tried. I would recommend, try a retreat that is minimal cost. If the retreat seems very expensive then it might not be that kind of journey. My apologies for the unsolicited story. I shared it with you because I thought it could help you find sustainable relief from pain and anxiety. It helped for me.

    Wow, Daren, I was overcome with emotion while reading this. This is EXACTLY what I need. I've done some trauma work and research in various forms, but this type of meditation challenge sounds perfect. My physical condition has improved since this video, yes, but my aches and pains still have never full gone away. Thank you so much for sharing your story. ❤ Would you be willing to share the information for the retreat you go to in Thailand?

    Excellent video Jenny, you're a great example of an articulate speaker for a serious subject to help other people of what to be aware of in regards to a Temazcal.     I tried San Pedro and it was the most therapeutic experience I ever had. It gave me encouragement. Makes you very aware of negative things holding you back but also the good things you should do more.

    The problem with this is that teal swan said that she did this with an Idaho indigenous tribe which does not employed as cactus is employed by indigenous tribes of the south.

    I was in a temazcal in guatemala twice. both times it was part of a hike that i did. The thing that I noticed most was that the fire was inside the hut that you would take the steam bath in. it was a wood fire that burned down to coals, and there was a pitcher of water to you would pour on the coals to get the steam up. one was very little, three people could sit cross legged, one was much larger, about the size of the one one you guys did. It really is hot. That is how they would cleanse themselves, since they did not have a hot water shower.

    How long were your hikes? We had a beautiful experience and would definitely do it again. We enjoy learning about our ancient cultures and traditions. Hopefully we can share more of these experiences with you.

    @@EatBailaTravel One was about 30 miles / 50 km from Xela to Lake Atitlan, the other was about 70 km form Nebaj to Todos Santos. One in 2006, the other in 2012.

Also, do you feel it is safe to drive after the ceremony, or would it be better to arrange transportation with someone who didn’t participate?     Hi Amy, it was about 2 hours total. With each phase lasting around 20-30 minutes. You’re able to exit the temazcal for a break from the heat before starting the next phase. I was so sleepy and relaxed afterwards I would not have been able to drive. Kevin drove us home, but I don’t know how he was able to stay up. It’s up to you if you feel like you’d feel comfortable driving after. Thanks for your positive energy 💞 each word of encouragement adds more light to the darkness.     Jenny I am thinking about going to Teotihuacán Mexico state of Mexico and try Temazcal thank you for sharing and I am also thinking of going to explore Merida Yucatan. You mentioned you guys moved to Mexico from Chicago where in Mexico did you move to? I leave in Schiller Park by Chicago O'hare. I have pain all over too specially in my neck and shoulder and lower back. I want to move out of this cold weather. fibromyalgia?

    We highly recommend experiencing a temazcal but we recommend doing it with a guide andas a spiritual journey. There are many temazcals that are just a sauna type experience. Merida is a beautiful place but it get VERY hot as hot as the temazcal lol all jokes Aside we love Merida but it’s summer is very scary dude to high heat. That’s awesome we grew up in little village and the town of Cicero. Kevin used to work in Elmhurst which is very close to Schiller Park. We hope that find a cure to your pain. The journey to pain free can be exhausting at times but it’s a journey worth venturing. Feel free to reach out to us anytime. Saludos!

    I have a similar chronic pain for years and tried almost everything but nothing healed me. I recently tried Ayahuasca in Peru but failed. I'm considering working with holotropic breathwork and maybe Shaman Durek even they might not work, but I have no better options. We all know healing takes risk and $$$.

    Hi Michael, first, thanks so much for asking. I haven’t talked about my health publicly on the channel but that doesn’t mean the struggles don’t continue behind the scenes. I hard a particularly hard week last week. I was in a lot of pain the days after Día de Muertos (which I believe were triggered by a combination of cold weather and lack of sleep, but I’m never totally sure). Unable to move my neck much and with extreme fatigue, I slept 14 hours last Saturday, took muscle relaxers, went to physical therapy and just rested. I haven’t been to a temazcal in a long time, but I do let hot water run on my neck and back in the shower. Most mornings I wake up stiff, I take my time getting up, stretch and lubricate my joints with light movement and deep breathing so I can start my day. After a few hours in the computer though, my body will start aching again and that makes it difficult to stay productive. It’s a part of my daily life and I’ve learned I have to make the time to tend to it otherwise it gets worse. Thankfully, today is a good day (no pain, only some stiffness, which is bearable). I’m happy, my heart is full, Kevin is the most supportive partner, and I’m thankful to be chasing my dreams. I have so much to be thankful for! Thank you so much for your comment. Writing this little reflection is actually medicine for my health today. ❤️🥹 fuerte abrazo 🫂

    And yes, stress is a huge factor. Even good stress, I’ve learned. Like when I’m nervous or excited about something positive. It still triggers my nervous system. Annoying lol

    @@EatBailaTravel Thanks so much for your lengthy reply ("lengthy: = "good"). I relate a lot to your struggles. I work at a computer. My body gets stiff, the muscles tight. CONSTANT stretching. I work out to maintain strength although have to space out the days lest I get too achy after. And I know, know, know it's stress-related. I wear a nightguard because I clench my teeth at night; I find myself clenching my hands. That sort of thing. I'm glad Kevin knows what a treasure he has in you. Stay awesome. Peace out.

    How long did the temazcal last? I think close to 2 hours. Each window (session) was nearly 30 minutes with a few minutes break in between

    Hi Vanessa, I don’t think it’s safe for individuals with heart problems. The extreme heat sends the heart into tachycardia and depending on the heart issue that may be dangerous. The length of time is about 1 hour to 1.5 hours, but you’re allowed to exit if you feel the need to.

    Mija have you tried the BioMedical center in Tijuana? All Natural almost all Auto-immune issues. Give the a call you know you have the real one if it has the huge birdcage.

    Great video. I don’t know if you still have pain, but perhaps I know what could help. What you have seems like reuma artritis, this is mostly caused by a virus. Perhaps Epstein Bar or Cytamegalovirus. If you really want to dig deeper I can only suggest the Medical Medium, as it helped me a lot! Hope you will be pain free soon🙏🏼

    I made this video before my diagnosis, which turned out to be fibromyalgia. It was a hard road, but I’m having more pain free days these days 🤗 it’s a constant maintenance still and flare ups now and then, so it still takes work 💪🏽

    Hi Vani, thanks for asking. When I made this video almost exactly one year ago, I still struggled to find relief. One month after this video I was formally diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition affection the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. There is no known cure as it’s an understudied condition, but I’ve tried lots of different pain relief therapies since. For the first time since this pain began, I am finally having more pain-free days (or at least very little pain on many days) one year after the diagnosis. I still try all kinds of things. Acupuncture, cupping, massage therapy, physical therapy, temazcal, yoga, moderate exercise, and even biomagnetism therapy. I’ve also worked on stress reduction and living in Mexico has definitely helped to reduce my stress a TON. Lifestyle changes are the biggest thing and therapies help to complement that.
