What to Know Before Buying a Rolex Explorer

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Rolex Explorer is often overlooked when compared to its flashier siblings like the Submariner and Daytona, but it’s every bit of a sport watch. We're going to look at a brief history, talk through some of the prominent references, and explain why we think the Explorer may be the best of the Rolex sport models.

Been wearing my 214270 MKII for almost 3 years -- I'm almost embarrassed to say just how much I'm still madly in love with the thing. On a simple nylon nato, it's discreet, perfectly sized to my wrist, and still holding steady at +1.15 sec/day. I'd buy one again in a heartbeat if ever I had to.

When I first started getting into horology a few years ago, I lusted after the Subby and always wondered why anyone would want an Explorer. I always thought they looked so boring. But as I got older, I learned to appreciate it more and now it's become my grail watch. :)

It's nice to always hear people in the watch industry sing such Hugh praises for such a simple watch. The 114270 is the model to get it has the updated movement and the solid end links that's characteristic of a modern Rolex with serial in the rehout.

I've owned both a 36mm and the latest 39mm. Size, weight and comfort are the main differences. The 36mm has perfect proportions and is light and comfortable to wear. Especially on a small wrist. The 39mm is more durable, heavy and more modern and looks great on a large wrist. The true weight is 100g for the 36mm and 140g for the 39mm. Forget what Rolex writes about case size, the actual case sizes are 35mm or 40mm (39.8mm) Best buy at the moment is the 114270 from 2008 or 09. They have the engraved glass and rehault. Not many were sold due to it being released at the same time as the financial crash of 08

@@MrSupraman13 Most people prefer the 36 dimensions. Next year is a special year for the Explorer which is why l think that they will improve the movement, increase the bracelet to 21mm and slim the lugs just like they have on the latest Sub. It will then have the look of the 36 only larger.

@@SC-vz9ie perhaps it would have been more precise to say lazer etched. There is a small Rolex crown in the glass at the 6 position. It came out in 06 and appeared on the explorer 1 in 08. The rehault on the 08 was still physically engraved. It's now lazer etched on all models. Its an easier and cheaper process and IMO doesn't look so refined. Since my last post one year ago the last version of the 36 has risen in value by around 15%

Everything I read says they are supposed to have a slip clutch that protects it from over winding, and the crown just keeps turning. But I'm wondering if this feature started with the cal 3130?

  • @CrownandCaliber

214270 MKII is the best Explorer ever released. That said, given the history of the Explorer line it makes sense why a lot of buyers would shop the 36mm, but I'm quite confident down the line the MKII is going to have a very serious following.

Yes. I agree. But then again I would given that I am sitting here sporting the 214270 new in May this year. I wanted a Sub but like many people found them unavailable in Ads and too expensive second hand. I then saw a couple of vids on youtube and was sold on the Explorer. I got it at a smidgen over list second hand in immaculate condition from London with all boxes and papers. I love it! Possible the best thing about it is the amazing bracelet. It is so well made and wonderfully comfortable. The Oysterlock sizing system is just brilliant. I still want a Sub but am prepared to order one and wait. I bought the Rolex thinking I would rotate it with another watch to ensure it didn't get bashed. I don't. It sits on my wrist all day every day and when I need to do some DIY or gardening etc which would be dangerous for the watch I just leave it on the table. It's a great watch which I think would be improved by beefing it up a little in case depth. But overall it's a winner and keeper.

Thanks for the very helpful replies. I bought my first “adult” watch last year as I turned 50, a 145.022 Omega Speedmaster. I felt it was the right watch for me to start a small collection: NASA connection, not as expensive as a 321 movement model, and same age as me. It has created a new kind of relationship for me with watches, because of the requirement to manually wind it each day. But of course, I have always wanted a Rolex and am someone who doesn’t want to just grab what is popular, so I’ve considered an Air King, an Explorer I, and now I am contemplating a Milgauss with the blue dial as well. These represent a large purchase for me, so I want to get it right. I don’t think of these as investments, but beautiful engineering pieces I can hand down to my kids and grandkids. I used to think that , now I’m getting older I can’t read the date without my glasses anyway so it’s become less important . Which for me personally is why I prefer the explorer , really, really easy to read the time at a glance.

Of all the references, I like the 214270 Mark II the most. But $6550, list, for a steel three-hander? No, thank you. And that people pay a premium beyond the list on the used market? Absolutely insane. I guess for some people status trumps all.

It was a modified OP, built specifically to tolerate extremes of temperature and altitude. So yes, technically it was an OP but was branded the Explorer to distinguish it from the regular OP line, on the merits of that technology (and, let’s face it, because it was a great marketing strategy).

Hey Donjon, The Explorer will have the Mercedes hands, black dial, and lumed triangle at 12 o'clock. TheExplorer is going to carry a more advanced movement, but it usually trickles down in the the OP. So a contemporary OP will have the same movement as the 114270. Other than that it's a lot of the history that comes with the Explorer name. Both are SOLID choices.
