The Rolex Submariner and the Rolex Explorer. Two massive players in the watch world, both from the same brand, both introduced in the early 50s, both packed with stories and both loved by many.
But which model is the ‘best’? What exactly makes these two watches specifically so different yet so evenly matched?
And the bigger picture here, which of the two should you add to your collection?
Now, although these watches were designed to survive the hardest conditions, not everyone in 2019 will be fully exploring those capabilities when strapping their favourite Rolex to their wrist.
When deciding on a new watch, being able to know what it’s really like to spend actual on wrist time with these watches in real-world situations is what matters.
We've put together four different yet common situations that the 21st-century wrist will experience have a Rolex Submariner head to head with a Rolex Explorer to see which model will come out on top.
Let’s start with a popular environment for many...
Everyday / Office wear
Whether you work in an office day to day or you spend a weekend sat on your computer the environment that ‘office wear’ falls under is pretty relatable.
The Submariner immediately has one extremely useful function that jumps out at me. The date window at 3 o’clock is endlessly handy for when the weekdays just seem to be disappearing from you. To be able to quickly glance down at your wrist to work out at what stage of the month you’re in is very useful.
Although not for it’s intended purpose, a rotating bezel is brilliant to use for keeping track of office related things like how long a meeting has been.
It’s not all positive however as the watch, although versatile for more smart outfits, it is thicker which means it's not the easiest to slip under a cuff.

No need for straps. Rolex bracelets are amazing especially the modern ones. Rolex Explorer 39mm is my choice on its original bracelet. Done.

Thats a great pick Jerome, the explorer is definitely more stealthy.
I am lucky enough to own both and must say explore 36mm is my favourite absolutely love it.
I have a Submariner as well but the Explorer really speaks to me: simple, elegant, rugged and perfect, non-bulky size on the wrist. Personally though, I prefer the bracelet but when it comes to straps, you need something black with white stitching that goes better with the dial than does tan or brown. A good strap here for both models would be a Hirsch carbon style or a black/gray stripe NATO strap!
Nice video nice voice Those your straps? Do you have a video on changing a strap? So far on yacht master blue and polar explorer 2 Hulk and batman next hopefully... More likely to add explorer than black sub to collection
Sad that these pieces were put on the ugliest watch straps.
The humble explorer👍👍👍👍
Your videos are beautifully made, as always! PS. Explorer 1 everyday and twice on sunday. Nothing like the understated class of old school Rolex.
Gosh seems like a lot of explorer fans.. I too tend to agree explorer is more understated

Great video. I have the Explorer Mk2 for the week and the new Ceramic Sub no date for the weekends. Love them both in different ways 👍
I have a no date Sub and love it. Have to go with a 39mm Explorer if I were going to add one. A transitional 16610 with solid end links and engraved rehaut would be a nice addition too at some point.

I changed a Sub for a 39mm Explorer because it is a little more 'under the radar'. Much happier that it doesn't attract so much attention from the wrong sorts and is a little less showy.
I bought a 114270 NOS 2010/11 to replace my 25 year old black face air king 34mm which my nephew claimed as his 21st birthday present. I love it. Understated but very competent and beautifully designed and proportioned.
I’ve been rotating my 16610 on a daily basis since 2000. I still prefer the original metal bracelet and I love the classical looks.
Have them both. Great combo. No date tho
Well done video! Good general comparison

I have a explorer whats the price of it on resale
Its funny with Rolex that I have tried many different bracelets on my Submariner and Datejust but gone back to the original metallic oyster or jubilee pretty fast. With other brands that I own like Breitling, Omega, Zenith, Longines and Eterna I have used lots of different straps. I guess that the bracelets on Rolex is just that good.
Who takes a modern rolex off the bracelet?
I have a 14270 and enjoy it. ⌚👍
Explorer for sure, and I've owned the 16610 and LV.
You compared a 36 explorer to a sub date. Wouldn't a more reasonable head to head be a sub no date to a 39 explorer?
214270 👍🏻
there are many sub fakes, but rarely do you see an explorer fake.

Rolex Explorer 114270 for me. Both great watches though. And both much better than their modern flashy "look at me", bloated counterparts.
Own the Explorer for a few years and love it...the 39mm. Keep it on the original bracelet.

submariner 116610 best Watch ever
Bro can u pls ask Rolex to release a white dial explorer? Cheers fam
I’m on Team Explorer 114270. It’s the closest thing to a perfect watch for me.
I bought my first Rolex in 1983, a 16800 Submariner & to this day it was the best choice I ever made. The one thing I learned that I didn't realize at the time is how incredibly useful the rotating bezel was, a more useful chronograph then a chronograph. I realize most people that buy modern day Rolex's will never use them for their intended purpose, which I don't have a problem with but l actually did & I still wear it today. I bought mine just before joining the Army & wore it every day of my life, it actually saved my life once. It went through every advanced school in the military & many combat engagements & to top it off it didn't even get its first service for 12 years. I love the Explorer ( 40mm ) but if you to only own one I couldn't recommend the Sub any more. And for the people who love the symmetry of the explorer dial then go for the no date Sub, you know the closest to the original 1953 version & of coarse the true James Bond, Sean Connery. Hope this will be helpful if you're on the fence, best of luck!
Ive got both 😁

16610 best combine classic and modern
Is that a real explorer? Why does it look like plain white gold applied 3-6-9 numerals?
After just 20 years without any Rolex I plan to return: for myself a 16610 from yr 2000-2004 and for my daughters birthyear Explorer 1 as diploma presents: one 14270 year 2000 and one 114270 year 2002. To find the best options for an excellent price: it will take time. But hey, who is in a hurry? :)
Perfect 2 piece collection

I agree! What IS wrong with the Original Oysterlok bracelet? Submariner is A Show Pony in the 21st Century. It's seldom gets wet nowadays. It's just a Desk-Diver for Office-Jocks. Who made the Submariner a famous & desired Status-Symbol? James Bond! Did he actually exist? No! Sir Edmund Hillary the man who Topped Mt. Everest in 1953 wore An Explorer. And he was A New Zealander. I was born in New Zealand in 1953. I Rest My Case.

Rolex do not make an Explorer "1". Its an Explorer, or an Explorer II.
Certainly better looking and size than the current generation in the Steinhardt size.

Omega Aqua Terra better than both.
I just can’t see the appreciation for nato strap, I think they they look simply awful !
Explorer is pointless. The sub rules ok.
I do not understand why Rolex Exolorer and Sumariner are now considered luxury watches. They were developed and created as tool watches!!
@JAYJAY-ch4ik
5 жыл бұрын
Pedro Saenz they are still tool watches. It’s just that Rolex as a brand itself with its powerful marketing in the last century made it into a highly recognised brand synonym with durability and reliability but also due to its transitioned recognition it now takes far more effort in material selection. Rolex ever returned 10 tons of steel from the supplier when its Engineers discovered a micro trace of 316 steel in its 914 shipment which is extremely anal compared to all the other brand offerings. Hence with that craftsmanship it’s and highly recognised branding with fancy history it is now a tool luxury watch.
@stevwest1394
2 жыл бұрын
@@JAYJAY-ch4ik hi do u have a link to the 10 tons steel return? Cant find it
Explorer has no historic reference, it’s just an OP in rag, Hamilton Khaki Field is much better as a field watch. Submariner is essentially the crown of all watches , not just an icon of Rolex.
