Time to SELL my Rolexes, Which one to keep and why?

Good thoughts, bad thoughts, stupid thoughts, but overall helpful thoughts in my view. We discuss about the necessity to own a Rolex and If it makes sense to buy one, based on your need, hope you like it :)

Personally, I’d keep the Explorer 1 and it’s not even close. It’s arguably the most perfect 3-hand dial design ever and it is more versatile than the other Rolex’s in your collection. Another reason to keep it is you’ll probably get more money for the other watches. Also, you already have the dive watch category, and 40mm+ sizes covered in your collection, so you won’t miss the Sub. The Explorer 2 has so many overlapping traits with the Sub: black dial, same hands, same indices. You can easily find a more unique GMT somewhere else.

The explorer 1 is indeed a lovable piece, super under the radar, great heritage, small, refined. For me if this was made o a 37 mm. it would had been my preferred one, over any rolexes.

I purchased Explorer 1 and Submariner same year my son was born. Explorer 1 I’m wearing on the NATO strap everyday. Doing everything with this watch, traveling, cooking, hiking, playing games etc. Also asking my son to help me to put it on my wrist and buckle the strap. Some day this will be his watch with tons of memories. He will get it no matter what. Submariner will be his college fund. If we can get it through without selling the watch, it will be his after he graduates from university.

I’m in the same blessed situation you are in. Only my Sub is a 5513 from 1972. My Explorer 36mm 2021 is my everyday watch. Perfect for me. On every other weekend. I’ll wear my Speedy. On special occasions I’ll wear my JLS master Ultra Thin small seconds. That’s my 4 watch collection. All pretty much one and done types of watches. All strap monsters, all quality over quantity.

Rolex fanboy here. You articulate great points driving your ultimate decision. Personally, I would sell all but the Explorer II. Your concern about the bezel is unfounded. It is cheap to replace at an AD. I rotate my watches every several days and I beat on my 226570 Polar hard. It’s big. I have 8.5 inch wrists and it looks great on me but I am a big guy. It has great water resistance and a very useful GMT function. Even better, it flies under the radar. I can wear it at work with nobody noticing it. Black dial even more so. I also often wear a neovintage 40mm 16570 Polar and it truly is the perfect size. Same GMT Master II movement but slides under a cuff easily. Good luck with your decision.

I'd keep the sub , just such a classic and versatile watch for what it is. For 30k I would personally get a Parmigiani Fleurier Tondagraph GT, a SeaQ panorama date and a Credor Signo 6870. Should be do-able in that budget if bought pre owned / grey market

I'd sell them all, and use the $30,000 to buy less clinical watches. I've come to appreciate the pre-ceramic Rolexes. A 14060M Submariner, or a 16710 GMT would be my top choices. Get a couple of NATO straps to put them on. How about a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Chronograph. It's a great looking watch with an awesome skeletonized dial on the reverse side. A Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Traditionnelle is a great looking watch. The green Omega Seamaster 300 Pro on a rubber strap is the most interesting variation of the Seamaster to me. Tudor recently released the Pelagos FXD Chrono for cyclists, which has a wonderfully intelligently designed dial.

I initially thought it was too small for my large wrists (7.75in). I decided to give it a try since it is such a classic design and found it to be one of my favorite watches. The size makes it extremely easy to wear. I dont have to worry about catching it on my my backpack when traveling, my seatbelt in a car or my shirt/jacket sleeve. It tends to just disappear until I need to tell the time.

I have the same Rolex models in my collection and have struggled with the same dilemma. I love all 3! In the end, I chose to keep them because once sold, it's not so easy to obtain them again and the prices will likely be exceedingly more than what you originally bought/sold them for in the first place. They all have sentimental value to me as well, so holding on to them so I can put them on when I fancy them again rather than missing them once they are gone was the right decision for me. I say keep them all and move forward. The market right now is also not in the best place for private sellers to offload a Rolex so patience is the best solution.....for now.

I also have these 3 watches, pre-ceramic era. I have considered selling the 36mm Explorer but couldn’t do it. I decided a while ago (for sanity) not to exceed 12 watches in the collection, and because of this I have sold a few I ended up regretting selling, despite not getting wrist time. All the watches I have are above 9/10 on the “wrist presence satisfaction” scale. When I want a new one it’s a well thought-out decision and not an impulse. It helps “control” the hobby.

It's pretty clear the size of the Explorer I doesn't do it for you, however objectively tempting it may be. The Explorer II is a looker but it's on the "polar" opposite of size and finally, the Sub is the icon you seem to feel an allure towards, from both a value and a timelessness angle. For me, a daily wearer of an OP 36LN, a Speedy and a G-Shock, the Explorer I would stay to maybe replace the OP if I didn't have it. The 41 OP Silver Dial sat in a box for half a year until I eventually sold it. It's 36 all the way for my 7in wrist, certainly a personal preference. And instead of the polar dial Explorer II I told my AD I wanted, I changed my mind and would rather put that money into a 321 Ed White Speedy. Good exercise and I thank you for sharing it.

I went through a similar dilemma recently with my 116900 Air King and 124060 Submariner. The more they went up in value on the second hand market, the less and less I wore them. More a subconscious decision than anything else, but every time I went to pick one up in the morning to wear for the day, I found myself hesitating and reaching for a piece that I was less precious about. Consequently, over time the Rolex in my collection went from being watches that made me smile and feel great, to watches I potentially worried about for fear of negatively affecting their (financial) value. So I took the decision to sell, made my profit and replaced with a couple of Grand Seiko watches that I feel give me more joy, less worry and personally think are better designs, technology and overall value. But that's just my opinion. First time watching your channel and now subscribed.

that's so true, I have the GMT Batman that I bought years ago when ADs even offered a small discount for some steel sports Rolex, yes you heard that right, many models even the GMT Batman were readily available and there were discounts from the AD! In recent years, as it's getting harder and harder to buy one from the AD and the higher it went up in value, the less and less I wear it, I don't know why, perhaps partly it's my self-consciousness of wearing something that is practically worth the same as a decent used car. Perhaps it's also because there's been a rise in watch robberies with crooks especially targeting Rolex wearers.

Same happens with Rolex. You want one , you want one… when you are still new to horology and then when you been around for a while and gone deeper into it all, you want pieces that are more special , more unique, … like a Fp Journe, an H.Moser, an Mb&F, etc. i think it’s a natural process on this fascinating journey.

Exp 2 the keeper. Exp 1 would be gone already (too small). Sub (gone) only because it is not a GMT and I feel the Exp 2 is just more dynamic and a true long-term keeper in a collection with great contrast. Wear it, use it and make the scratches yours. I would guess it would wear long term perfectly. I am on the list for a Polar and when it comes in, I am hoping it will be the only Rolex in the WB as the YM (116622) will find its way out. I have often thought of my collection w/o Rolex and if I would be happy or not. I think I would manage with so many other brands to explore and my tastes constantly evolving I often feel like the collection is a 'road of memories' if you will. First time viewing one of your videos. I enjoyed it very much. I’ve been in a similar dilemma multiple times and have had most of the sports steel Rolexes in and out of my collection. The concern for re-acquiring at a premium is real but not impossible to overcome if you are patient. I’m currently in a Sea Dweller 16600t, 2006, Z series. I have a 7.5 wrist and am 6’2”, 220. I usually gravitate to larger watches, not so much for wrist presence but for visual balance between my wrist and hand size. Divers are my favorite. My budget is decent but not limitless so I’m often feeling uptight when there’s too much money tied up in any one piece. The other issue is ubiquity. It really bums me out to see so many subs (for instance) on other wrists. Yes, it confirms the quality of the watch, but also points towards the simple status value of wearing a Rolex to most of the people wearing them. I traded out of a maxi-case Sub into this Sea Dweller (and took some money off of the table). It wears a little smaller in dial size and diameter but has the subtlety and uniqueness I’ve been wanting in a Rolex (if that’s possible). I’ve had the 43 SD, a 41 Sub/date, a no date aluminum bezel (14060), same with date, not to mention numerous GMTS, explorer IIs. I’ve never felt comfortable keeping any of them. Or that emotionally attached. And I couldn’t figure out why. So this video was very helpful to understand my feelings which I could hear in your expression of your dilemma. I’d say sell them all and don’t look back. If you need to buy back one that you miss, you will find a deal if you are patient. I’m currently downsizing my collection to make more room for future acquisitions and to enjoy fewer watches. Too many becomes a headache for me personally and I feel like I’m neglecting them. I’ve thought of the Explorer I many times because I admire it as a marvelous design, but it’s frankly just too small visually for me and more of a museum type piece than a watch I would wear. If you keep anything, I would keep the EXP II; it’s unique and not one held by many collectors. Subs are everywhere, and with good reason, but I think there’s a compunction to have one as a collector that doesn’t stick ultimately for me. Hence, why I’ve bought and sold so many. I think this Sea Dweller is a keeper. I’ve adjusted to the visual size and the wearability (and I will wear it daily) makes it an ideal piece. It’s not one that everyone has and still scratches the Rolex itch in the diver category which is my favorite. I will miss the modern bracelet, which is a marvel. I will say the older bracelet type with solid end links wears light and still has a feeling of luxury and quality. I also wear it on a black strap from Everest that gives it a real skin diver feel. Thanks again for the content!

Awesome thoughts Anselm, thank you for sharing them with us! you are right in regard, firstly that Dweller is very cool! Second, I am glad the video was helpful for you, I thought I was the only one with this dilemma :) And 3rd, besides the money blocked, I do want to downsize my collection as well. and maybe put some money into other pieces that deserve to be collected and enjoyed. so it's not about getting rid of the rolexes, it's also about giving the chance to other good brand to be in the collection. and decrease the number of them as well. Thank you once again for your words :) Cheers, Andrei

Btw the Explorer 36mm really measures at 36mm. The size is not on the case. It’s on the bezel that goes over slightly on the edge… Use a digital caliper and measure from 2-7 o’clock.

Since you're not making a financial decision, it's really a matter of the heart. Which watch speaks to you most? Which do you pick up the most? I own an Explorer, Sub, and Explorer II (but slightly different generations than yours). I'd keep the Explorer as I like how low-key it is. Have you thought of selling all three? Then, if you really miss one, you're likely to be able to buy the same model for a similar price in the coming year or two? Great way to test which one you'd really miss.

Getting back into Rolex is not that easy if you want to buy from an AD, but you can enjoy having money back to try other brands. Perhaps sell one, see how you feel and how that goes. The Submariner seems to be the most versatile of them, and the proportions are the best. It is the one model that has matured over the years like the 911. At the same time it’s not extremely special apart from the secondary market prices. As a beater you could go for the BB58. That’s one you wouldn’t have to be too worried about scratches or being too flashy

Each one has issues like you list, and you don't absolutely love any of them. This isn't a popular opinion, but I've never really liked the Sub. Just as you said, it's too sober for a diver, I don't connect to it. Personally I do genuinely like the 39mm explorer or 40mm polar dial explorer 2, but there are so many alternatives I would move both. Maybe look at the railmaster 1957 trilogy as an alt for the explorer 1. The only rolex I actually want is a panda Daytona, but so does everyone else!!

Interesting question, and frankly a slightly surprising answer at the end. I actually thought you were going to end up keeping the Explorer 1, given that you compare both the Explorer 2 and Submariner to it and come up with it leading in both cases. So the order would be, in terms of what goes out: Explorer 2, Submariner, Explorer 1. That, by the way, would be my choice, with the nuance that I would ultimately not let go of the Explorer 1. It is too good, too classic, too versatile, and too beautiful a watch in my eyes.

I'd sell Sub first. I've had a couple of Subs in the past and ended up selling. I think you have a similar dilemma that I do. I like diver watches, and there are a ton of good divers out there. It may be the strongest watch "category" overall. So it's quite easy to find watches I like wearing just as much as the Sub. I also have an Omega Seamaster like you, and I love it. Also have an Omega PO. Some Seiko divers. As a diver lover, I couldn't just have one like the Sub. And that would lead to the dilemma you currently face - a lot of money locked up in a watch not getting much wrist time AND can be easily substituted with something else. There's a huge gap between the Sub and the other two in terms of ease of selling. But the next one would be Explorer I. Similar thought process. There are a lot of good time-only simple GADA type watches out there. Tudor's BB36. Omega AT. Basically if you have an Explorer I, you have to commit it to it being your ONLY watch, or at least your main watch. Otherwise it kind of gets lost in the shuffle and loses wrist time. Last one I'd sell (and the one I think you should keep) is the Exp II. Seems to be the only one of the 3 that has a tangible sentimental connection. But most importantly, it's a watch that doesn't have as many true competitors, and is a bit more unique than the above two. It's kind of easy to give it wrist time, especially if you get over your fear of scratching it up and losing value. If you commit to really wearing it, I think it's a watch that rewards you. But overall, I think you should do really keep both of the Explorers. They make a really good combo. Again, the Sub is the easiest sell because there are so many good divers out there.
