The Explorer is my grail watch! No matter where this hobby takes you, Rolex always intrigues and mystifies me enough to wonder what it would be like to own and wear one of their watches! For me personally, the brand's heritage coupled with the humility of the understated Explorer is the perfect oxymoron! In a world where "flash and cash" are celebrated (or at least appear to be on social media and the likes there of), this model I truly believe lends itself to any environment. It is a luxury item that somehow doesn't have to boast! It just exists for whatever personal reason the wearer purchased it for! It is for this reason, I feel this design is iconic and will remain forever relevant!

I think it is the ultimate timepiece, especially in 36mm. The Explorer is my grail watch but, unfortunately, completely unaffordable for me. Well done. I sold all of my Seiko MM's on Random Robs channel to buy a new Explorer I 39mm. I quickly learned that new ones are extremely hard to find in the US. I called every authorized dealer in town and no one had one. I got lucky and found one a couple hours away from my home. I made the drive and snapped it up. Its even better in hand.

I agree with the comment above, I think they improved the clasp, movement and lume but the modern version (that I still hope to get shortly) lacks something in comparison. It’s technically better but lacks the X factor of the model you have. If the older ones were at sensible pre owned prices I’d consider buying one but as they are so close to the new version I think I want the tech spec of the newest version when spending £5.5k- but I really appreciate your version 👍🏼

I’ve owned the 39 mm mark 2 Explorer for 2 years now and I love it! The dial is amazing to look at. I’ve taken it traveling around the world, hiking and driving at various race tracks. It is a perfect size on my 7 inch/18cm wrist. I don’t get your “negative space” comment on its dial. I think the dial is perfect. I have a date just at 36mm which makes sense, but a professional series watch like the Explorer is best at 39mm size. Thanks for the video.

Your point about negative space and integration made me realise why I love the design of the Heuer Carrera and my Dan Henry 1964 (which is based on the Carrera) so much. It is 38mm and its compax subdials just fit perfectly into the design. This probably wouldn't have been possible with a 40mm dial.

I never thought I would like this watch, but when I called my AD in Feb to see how he's doing and I asked to see if any new stock arrived he said he has the Explorer. I asked if he could hold it for me so I can stop by and take a look which he did. I stopped by a few days later and to my surprise I fell in love with this Explorer and bought it the same day. I spent a few hours with him and during our conversation I asked about the Daytona white dial which he responded that they have to many people waiting for me to be added. He asked if I would be interested in the black dial and I said yes that the black dial is very sexy too. He said to give him a few months and that he will get me the black dial Daytona. I was of course ecstatic, but now Covid-19 has taken over the world so my Daytona surely will have to wait with Rolex being shut down. I'll wait since our health is more important then any watch will ever be. I wish everyone health and happiness and whichever timepiece you are wearing wear it in good health.

You are very lucky. According to WatchBox, those black dial Daytonas are becoming the watch to grab! I paraphrase but the comment went something like: "The white dials have had their time and now collectors are looking to the black dials as the something new to collect". As a watch lover, please call your AD guy and make sure its on its way!!!! Congrats on your purchase - really nice taste.

Yet another great video my friend. It is clear to see how the Explorer is the child of the Oyster Perpetual range, very much like the Milgauss. It provides a clear and easily legible display of the time to the wearer and lacking a date complication is an ideal ‘wind and wear’ solution which could easily serve as an only watch. In an ideal world I would be going for the mint example of the 1016 that you showed us in your 2nd livestream. Ever since I saw that I can’t stop thinking about it. Damn, these watch channels!!! ✊

I have always loved the Explorer design for the reasons you summarised so we’ll. but you have hit the nail on the head with the size. It can dress up as well as down, yet still remain true to it's tool watch roots. I believe it is one of the most versatile watches on the market. Hi, I have to congratulate and thank you for the quality of your content. If possible, would like to hear your views on the most notable “every-day” watches in comparison - like one of rge Grand seiko models (SBGA211 for example) vs the Explorer vs an Omega Globemaster vs JLC master control Q1398120 perhaps. For me, all excellent pieces from excellent houses - what do they all do that contrubutes to success, and where do they differ?

The Explorer is alright. It’s not flashy or shouty. It’s an honest, down-to-earth watch - from Rolex, no less. I like that. Also, excellent video, as always. Interesting points and unique insight from someone who is clearly a professional in design.

Good video. I think I'm starting to get why the Explore like by so many YT and online reviewers--enthusiasts and fanboys alike. The Explorer never really appealed to me because of the 3-6-9 numerals. I understand that is what many loved about it; but I never did. There was something about that that felt slightly asymmetrical. I don't like watches with numbers on them--except pilot's watches--and wasn't crazy about the Mercedes hands as well. Again, I know that these are the defining features. But, after watching dozens of videos and reading more about it, I am starting to get it. My next step is to see one in person. And, one these SIP orders are lifted in my area I will.

I imagine there are more references to the submariner most likely due to its category. As a dive watch especially with the already added complication of a rotating bezel, the submariner has had to keep up with the competition requiring updates not necessary for the explorer. And where radical departures to function needed to be incorporated into the design-there was instead a branched off with the Explorer 2 and Sea Dweller as not to disrupt the iconic designs of the originals.

Funny that the video is about the 214270, the Explorer that arguably broke with the lineage more than any other, being 39mm. The 124270 in 36mm is where it’s at!

With the case, movement and bracelet (aside from clasp) being the same between the Oyster Perpetual 39mm and the Explorer I 39mm, which do you feel is a better design? While the Everest history is interesting, I lean towards the black dial OP. Now to get Rolex to offer it with available clasp upgrades.

This watch is design perfection, that’s why so many people have the Explorer itch they cannot scratch until they buy one. It is my grail watch and I contemplated buying it several times now. My only problem is that I love it’s story and utility as much as the design and sadly Rolex marketing and pricing strategies makes this watch feel really far off it’s initial purpose. It loses a lot of it’s magic and becomes just a perfectly proportioned luxury watch.

  • @SPQR-Z

Great analysis of the Explorer. Your exactly correct about the current 39mm offering. It’s a tad on the large size and all that extra negative space causes the dial to be “off” visually. It’s hard to put your finger at first but as mentioned the dial proportions just don’t work as well as the original 36mm. Also Rolex keeping the 20mm bracelet width further causes the proportions to be off slightly. That said I always felt the 36mm was a tad on the small side. 37.5mm would have been the perfect size giving the watch a modern aesthetic and wrist presence while still being more true to it’s original design. It was a dilemma choosing between the 36mm and the 39mm. In the end I felt the larger watch worked better for my 7”+ wrist. The model improvements especially the lumed Arabic’s tilted the scale in the 39mm’s favor. Hopefully Rolex will revisit the case size in the future.
