Fractured my scaphoid (non-displaced waist) 4 weeks in plaster and 5 weeks in a removable brace. Thank God it healed. The scariest part is not knowing if it'll heal or not. Good luck and fast recovery to anyone that's here because they broke theirs.

I've had this surgery now, I'll tell you my story and try to answer any questions. I broke my scaphoid after getting knocked off my bicycle. At the ER they took XRays put me in a thumb spica cast and told me to come back in a few weeks. I went to see a private hand specialist who had me do CT scans. The specialist told me I had a crushed fracture and recommended surgery. Due to scheduling conflicts I had the surgery 1 month after the accident. During the surgery they put a screw in and recast my wrist. After 6 weeks I got my cast off. Total cast time was 10 weeks. My wrist had practically zero movement afterwards. I began physical therapy immediately. Now I'm two weeks into the torture.. I mean therapy. Progress is slow but notable. I will try to update in the future.

Hello everyone I was recently diagnosed with a waist scaphoid fracture and doctors told me 8-12 weeks before returning to basketball. I did everything I could to heal myself faster and I got cleared to play at exactly 5 weeks from the break. I hope this creates a sense of hope for some of you dealing with this process. Keep your hopes high and know that anything is possible with your effort and beliefs.

I got a question my scaphoid bone was broken from a dirt bike crash I went to the doctor and put a cast and did X-rays a couple time during 12 weeks the doctor said that it was healed and then he pressed gently on my hand and it didn’t hurt. Then when I got home I started to bend my wrist small movements were fine but when I try to bend the wrist as much as I can with my other hand it hurts a lot it supposed to do that? In short: is it bad if it hurts when I bend my wrist when my doctor said it was healed.

I fractured the bottom left side of my scaphoid on my right hand just got my cast off yesterday it’s not painful to touch but motion really hurts I bought a splint that immobilizes my thumb, which kinda fracture is this from the ones you said and how likely is it to heal without surgery? Bottom left and middle ish..

Never got a surgery because I had good blood flow because of location or whatever but now 2 years later my whole heel of my hand is a bit numb and itchy as hell every now and then. Anyway to fix this?

Fractured my scaphoid bone around 3 months ago while bmxing. I have gone from a cast to a splint and after recent cat scans it’s been revealed to me that I’m going to need surgery which includes them screwing the bone together and casting it back up. I’ve been reading horror story after horror story and am concerned I’ll never be able to ride or do push-ups again. If anyone has any advice or motivation they can share from their own personal experience I would greatly appreciate it. I’m scared out of my mind right now and can’t stop freaking out please help.

2nd time breaking mine, luckily this time it has been 4 weeks in a cast, now in a splint. The splint is great, provides good support but allows the muscles to strengthen again.

Hi Doctor, If a patient fall on an outstretch hand and complain of wrist pain and you suspect scaphoid fracture. Do you do CT right away and refer to hand surgeon?

I’m 10 weeks into the recovery process for a schaphoid fracture after a bike accident - I was in a cast for 10 weeks and have “graduated” to a splint for 2 more weeks. Latest X-ray looked good so I’m almost done, but that stupid little bone is a real pain in the butt to deal with. I did a lot of walking in the early stages of my recovery, which maintained my sanity & got the blood flowing & also started stationary bike a week or so ago. Hang in there - it will get better eventually but you need to be patient!

I fractured my scaphoid during a high school football game. Didn’t hurt much at all at first so I played through the rest of the season and did track during the winter. My wrist hurt sometimes during that period but I was generally able to bear it and could get through most of my normal activities. However, I noticed that it progressively got weaker over time. Ultimately I decided to get it checked out after I could no longer support my own weight or lift in the weight room. Turns out that I needed a major bone graph, screw, and plate in order to get it to try and heal since it had been fractured for over 4 months. They took bone from my forearm instead of my pelvis because I was so young. I got the surgery and had to miss my entire lacrosse season that year due to recovery being over 12 weeks. Thank god it healed and I was able to go back to playing sports the following year.

Thanks for the clear explanation. I fell off my bike In early November, went to a clinic the same day, but x-rays showed no damage so the doctor told me not to worry, to rest and apply a compress, and I would be fine. I wasn’t happy with this diagnosis, so after a few repeat visits, went to another clinic. Here, the doctor took X-rays on my hand and top of tibia, along with ultrasound. He thought there may be fractures to both, sonlso ordered an MRI, which happened a few days later. This confirmed the fractures to both the top of the tibia and the scaphoid. I had my hand/arm cast straight away, and a temporary leg cast fitted. I returned to the clinic a few times for continuous x-rays, and just before Christmas was told that the leg was healed sufficiently that I no longer need the leg cast, and could start walking again. However the hand was still not quite ready. Today, early January, I returned to the clinic and had the hand/arm cast removed, and some more X-rays. The tibia and scaphoid are gradually healing, allowing me to return to normal activity, however the doctor recommends I wait a few more weeks/months before getting back into exercising properly. So I will continue to do gentle walking and stretching. I’m really grateful for the expert knowledge of the second doctor, as I could so easily have followed the first doctor’s advice and done nothing, potentially resulting in a slower recovery, or bones that did not heal.

I fractured my scaphoid in a motorbike accident, had surgery 2 days after due to my arm swelling and them finally finding the fracture. They went in on the underside of the wrist without a bone graft and screwed it back together.

Broke (crushed, were the surgeon's words) my scaphoid about 3.5 months ago now after a mountain bike crash, had surgery on it a month to the day after breaking it after seeing a couple different surgeons. Mine required 6 pins, 2 small plates and a bone graft from my radius. I spent 4 weeks in a soft splint and then 8 weeks in a hard cast. I'm about a week and a half out from having my cast removed and mobility is generally slow to return. My thumb mobility returned to about 90% within the first week, but I only have about 30 degrees of flexion in either direction from my wrist. My surgeon didn't recommend PT for active folks my age(I'm 30), but I've been stretching and exercising it as it allows.
