Holy...what a process.

This process is so different and so much more complicated than in the UK, my brain feels fried! If you choose to change your name it gets done automatically when the marriage certificate is signed and then you just use that and ID to change your name on everything else. You also take your marriage certificate away with you on the day so you could start changing things that day if you really wanted 🤷🏼‍♀️

I did the whole passport process and got my new one in the mail within two weeks; it was really quick. I also got my new social security card and new drivers license sent to me within a week 🤷🏼‍♀️

In regards to getting your new passport, you should be able to just go to any United States Post office and get it there. I just went and renewed mine and it sounds like its the same process if you're getting a new one because of your last name change. Call your local post office and they should be able to give you more info on it!

Yes, you just need to bring a copy of your marriage certificate

Hey Michel, did you two ever consider the option that both give up their surname and adopt a completely new one? It's called "meshing", one of the things you could do: 1. Combine both names and fuse them together, so for example "Brox" and "Thornton" would become "Broxton" 2. If it's complicated to just fuse both names, choose a few letters from both and create a nice name with them 3. Choose something which you both love as a template for a new surname (for example if both love swimming something which has to do with water or the Ocean etc.) 3. Choose something completely different like a japanese name (like Satori) if both plan to live in Japan or a german name (like Müller) if they'd plan to live in Germany/Austria/Switzerland and so on I think that it's an interesting & romantic idea but seems to be rather rare, even around North America, South America, Europe and Australia ^-^

How did you find all of this information after changing your name? Once you change it do you have to change everything to your now marriage name or can you just leave as is?

Tip: when you pay for your marriage certificate, request for atleast 2 copies. They will make give you as many copies as you need just in case.

I recently got married at San Francisco City Hall. And I still don't understand why that can't mail us a free one. Is it that big of a deal? 😑

During the process at no point do you have to change your actual birth certificate , right?

What if you don't have a passport? Would a State Id or driver's license work just fine? Or, when you say "passport" are you just referencing just some form of a second photo ID?

Passports stand in for either a formal ID (like license) or proof of citizenship (like birth certificate). If you don't have a passport you'll probably need your license and birth certificate for applying for a new social security card and a new license

Wonder how long will this man taking practice sustain? If this is truly on equal partnership. What is becoming one to do with the groom’s name? What makes his legacy more important than the woman’s? This practice has disturbing roots. And even in modern day age this is in mainstream.
