  • @ForeverNewlywed

    @ForeverNewlywed

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Fabiola! I would definitely suggest using your certified copy. Birth, death, marriage, and divorce certificates are considered vital records, so to verify identity, it's best to have your original copies, NOT photocopies. The DMV may be more lenient, but with the way things are now with covid, I wouldn't risk waiting in that long line, only for them to tell you the printed copy is insufficient.

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Diana that is so wonderful to hear. Many blessings to you and your spouse. OK! In order to get a copy of your marriage certificate you would go to your state's State Department of Health Vital Records Office. I believe you can actual have it mailed to you in SOME states. I know for my husband and I, we were then directed to the clerk of the city or county where our license was issued.

  • @ForeverNewlywed

    @ForeverNewlywed

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Eva!!! Great question. You do not "need" to have a copy. The original will work for most document changes. BUT I highly recommend you get another official copy as soon as you can, as a back up. For example, if you need to change your name on your passport, they want you to send an original copy of the marriage certificate. And they would have it for a month or more. So if you need it for something else, you'd have to wait. How you get a certified copy: you'd go to your state's Office of Vital Statistics. I got married in NJ so I went to that office (the office may have a different name in your state). There will be an application you fill out. In NJ the fee is $25. So just be prepared to pay a fee. Have your ID. And have your original certified copy. I hope that helps! I'm so glad the video was helpful. I'm here if you have any other questions. And do check back in with your progress! ❤️

  • @ForeverNewlywed

    @ForeverNewlywed

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Tatyana! Congrats on getting it done quickly (lol even with some push from your hubby lol)! So, from what I've learned from others who have commented, going to the county clerk's office is a step that depends on the state you are in. I did not do that (New Jersey), but others have commented that they had to. So, for NJ, changing your name due to marriage is the only instance (outside of being a minor) where changing your name does not require the county clerk step.

  • @rosarioochoa3734

  • @ForeverNewlywed

    @ForeverNewlywed

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Rosario!! Amazing question! So, the marriage license is the legal document you get from the county clerks office (or your local registrar/municipal) and you need it in order to get married. Then, the marriage certificate is the legal doc that you get after you're married proving that you're married. And I'm referencing my response to another viewer here: How you get a certified copy: you'd go to your state's Office of Vital Statistics. I got married in NJ so I went to that office (the office may have a different name in your state). There will be an application you fill out. In NJ the fee is $25. So just be prepared to pay a fee. Have your ID. And have your original certified copy. If you need a copy of the license, you can go to the municipality where you obtained your original. Did I answer your question clearly?! Let me know if you need anything else. Much success to you and THANK YOU for watching and taking the time to interact!

  • @ForeverNewlywed

    Hey hey! So, I don't have experience with the Naturalization process BUT from what I've heard, it may depend on what state you live in, to determine whether you'd need to change your name on that certificate. Googles generic answer says "Applicants may submit Form N-565 to update their name on a replacement Certificate of Naturalization based on a name change ordered by a state court with jurisdiction or due to marriage or divorce." You should be able to contact your local Office of Vital Records to verify. I hope this points you in the right direction!

  • @ForeverNewlywed

    @ForeverNewlywed

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey 👋🏽 so the court aspect is state by state. Certain states like CA, have to petition the court AND even do a publication in the paper. If your state requires this step, it's the one extra step before you get to the information I provide. In simplest form you file a complaint for a name change in the Law Division of the Superior Court. There's forms to fill out and a fee.

    Hey Kay! So, I have found that certain states (i.e. NY) are doing Phone Only services. This can be frustrating. Depending on the timeline you are working with, you can either wait for the nearby office to open for in-person. OR take the journey to an office that's fully open even if it's further away. Always call first, because open offices may only be taking appointments. Also, print out the forms beforehand and fill them out. The process is rather short once you actually get into the office.

  • @ForeverNewlywed

    @ForeverNewlywed

    Hey Falyn! It may depend on the state that you are in. In New Jersey, I had a copy of my marriage certificate (which had my maiden name), my current social security card, my birth certificate, and I had filled out the form indicating I wanted my name changed.

    Hello! Can i keep my middle name and original last name and just add my new married name? If so, how do i go about in doing this?

  • @ForeverNewlywed

    @ForeverNewlywed

    4 ай бұрын

    Hey there! Yes you can! You'd go through the same steps. When you change your name on your Social Security Card, fill out the paperwork with the entire new name that you are changing to. So, you'd put the entire hyphenated name (original last name - new married name) on the line that asks what the new last name will be. You can also opt NOT to hyphenate it, and just make it a double last name. Your middle name remaining the same wouldn't affect the process 👍🏾 Everything from there gets easier because your SSC will serve as proof of what the new full last name will be. Let me know if the process was any different than this. I'm always looking out for any changes that may have happened in the passed few years.

    So, question… If I got married, have my marriage certificate already, with my old last name on it, do I have to file a petition to the court? Or do I just go straight to the Social Security Administration with everything in hand?

  • @ForeverNewlywed

    @ForeverNewlywed

    Hey Cindy! It may depend on the state that you are in. In New Jersey, I had a copy of my marriage certificate (which had my maiden name), my current social security card (also with maiden name), my birth certificate, and I had filled out the form indicating I wanted my name changed. The fact that you have a marriage certificate should be enough for the SSA to understand that marriage is your valid reason for changing your name.

    Hey hey! I'm glad you asked for clarity. Ok, you do not have to send your marriage certificate anywhere. You just have to have the original in hand. The first step is to go to the social security office to apply for a new card. Once you complete this step, next is the driver's license. So you'd go to the DMV (or MVC). For each of these steps, you need that original copy of your marriage certificate in hand. Does that help? The only time you have to send your physical marriage certificate is when applying for a new passport.

(me, recognizing that you asked this question a month ago 🤦‍♀🥴) If not, the best place to start is the social security office. Get to your local office at the crack of dawn (like 20 minutes before they open because the line will be long). Have all your documents, and you can have this crucial step handled so you can move on to the next!

    Don't be overwhelmed sis! From my research, this is what you do: The biggest change COVID has effected in this process is how we communicate and how long the process takes. You need all the same documents ready as before. To file for a new Social Security Card, you need your birth certificate, original Social Security Card, forms of identification verifying your age, identity, citizenship, immigration status such as a passport, and your marriage license. As for the forms, here is the best link I found to the application: blog.ssa.gov/need-to-change-your-name-on-your-social-security-card/ If this does not work, send me your email and I'll email you the form! Typically, you would submit these forms in-person. Now, you need to mail these important documents to the Social Security Association. Per the SSA website, “you can take or mail this signed application with your documents to any Social Security office. Any documents you mail to us will be returned to you."

    Lol I agree with Graciela and Veronica! This video is for those who are ready to make the change and who want to make the change. Def no mandates here. But I noticed you said your spouse had a hand in making the decision. CONGRATS on graduating 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 You did the thang! You earned it and you should be super proud! Maybe in 30 years when you're more accustomed to your new name, it won't feel so bad. Personally, I earned my degree before I got married so it still says my maiden name.

    Well that's sexist, guys can't change their name? Lol. Also you don't need this much stuff anymore. Literally called today and you only need you State ID and Marriage License.

    Oh my goodness, of course they can. BUT this page tends to come from the Lady Lens 😁 and you know, my friend C J from California explains that the process is very extensive there 🤷🏾‍♀️ glad to hear your process was smoother. The simpler the better in this case! Thanks for commenting!

    @@ForeverNewlywed I know I'm just messing around. My wife and I are both dropping our names and creating a new shorter one, that takes from both. O'Connor and Zawistowski will now become O'Zavis.
