It’s so hard to tell which memes will be ground breaking landscape altering ones and which ones will just be ordinary use for a while and die off ones. For example, I remember seeing a meme of venom talking to a guy and saying “it would be so awesome it would be so cool,” in sometime late 2022. I laughed, said “that’s funny. Venom did not actually say that.” Then it got used slightly more and faded away. I also remember sometime in late 2022 or early 2023, I saw a video of some guy by the name of Beast Child make a 30 second long video where he just sat and looked at the camera and merely recited he latest goofy slang words. He went like this: “Livy dunne rizzing up Baby Gronk, Kai cenat Fanny tax swag gyatt only in Ohio, sigma alpha skibidi.” It wasn’t a meme where the phrases were used in context. The first time I saw that, I thought that was clever and funny. Instead of using the phrase rizz in a sentence with context, we just recite it blindly with no sentence context. That’s so silly. So instead of a video where they go, “hey man, you’ll never get a girlfriend,” “lol, I already do have 3, my Rizz game is unmatched.” The person sits and recites blindly all funny modern slang words. When I first saw this in late 2022, I also said to myself, “oh haha, that’s funny, they’re making fun of how children don’t understand how to tell jokes and humor. They think that just by reciting modern slang words, that makes them funny. And by making fun of those little kids who are failing to be funny, the video actually is funny, as we laugh at the little kids idiotically reciting slang words, since they haven’t learned to understand humor yet. Then I went about my day and thought it too would die down. The problem is that it never did die down. Young kids kept on getting online over and over again and they never learned that the humor is ironically pointing fun at them, they didn’t catch the satire. So they began thinking that is genuine humor. And it took off and now it is a part of the meme culture unironically. It’s so strange and hard to predict what will become a massive deal and what will fade away. I remember a time not that long ago when all this “what the sigma” was just irony pointed at little kids. Now, it’s genuine.
