What the media won't tell you about Cuba's protests w/Manolo de los Santos & Liz Oliva Fernandez

Protests against shortages of food and fuel in Cuba's eastern provinces on March 18 brought the corporate media spotlight back to the island, which is currently experiencing a major economic crisis. True to form, much US reporting on the protests attempted to construct a familiar narrative of Cuba as a failed state on the brink of collapse, with no mention of the 62-year US blockade. This is particularly striking given how Cuba's current crisis is a direct outcome of the intensification of the blockade under Trump-which President Biden has upheld throughout his term despite promises to relieve the strangulation of Cuba.
So what's really going on in Cuba today? How severe is the crisis, and where did it come from? What sort of future do the Cuban people envision for themselves, and what role does the US have to play in it? To address these questions and more, The Real News speaks with Manolo de los Santos of The People's Forum, and Liz Oliva Fernandez of Belly of the Beast.

Cuba should join BRICS. The Cuban people have so much to offer and the United States stands in the way. Enough is enough. It's time to end the embargo.

Russian foreign minister Lavrov has announced that Cuba has shown interest in joining BRICS. ... This means the US will do what it can, however covertly, to stop that from occurring

In the US, most people are against the embargo/sanctions on Cuba, because I think we understand that any coercion by another country in how we run our own govt would only encourage solidarity and resistance, even if we don't agree with each other. Unfortunately, the American people have lost control of our govt. Solidarité 🇨🇺✊

The sanctions regime remains because there is a small, yet active and vocal constituency of Cuban refugees in Florida, which is still perceived as a battleground state. I suspect that once it is confirmed that Florida is indeed a Republican state, a Democratic president will finally lift these nonsensical and hypocritical sanctions that are making life impossible for the common people in Cuba.

I lived in Cuba, and although is a system that no longer works, Cuba today is in a cross roads, because if all of a sudden, they open the economy and remove all of the housing/food subsidies it will become the most violent and dangerous country in the continent. So the process of opening has to be slow and gradual.

Cuba made a deal with Russia to put nuclear missiles in their island. That is why usa put an embargo. Insted of looking to the usa for help. Cuba should just strengthen relationships with European natuons , African natuons and katin America.

Cubans want their govt gone, they want the american dream, they are some of the most resilient people I have had the privilege to travel amongst, my heart is full and broken when i think of Cuba. The US needs to show cubans they are a humanitarian regime, drop the sanctions and allow cuba to climb out of the very dark place it inhabits, to take its place in the world after hundreds of years of hardship. Oh right, humanitarain USA has a price tag. 🇨🇺

So the US sanctions are destroying Cuba. Why would happen if there is no economic siege? Cuba would flourish and that would be bad for capitalism.
