What the Helly Aa? (Your guide to Shetland's Up Helly Aa fire festivals)

Ойын-сауық

Up Helly Aa is a superb spectacle, a celebration of Shetland history, and a triumphant demonstration of islanders' skills, spirit and community. It takes several thousand people 364 days to organise. Much of the preparation is in strictest secrecy. The biggest secret of all is what the head of the festival, the 'Guizer Jarl', will wear and which character from the Norse Sagas he'll represent in each of the 12 Shetland fire festivals held between January and March each year.
What the Helly Aa guides you through the Up Helly Aa festivals held throughout Shetland, their history, what a Guizer Jarl is, what Up Helly Aa means to the communities here in Shetland and how everyone pulls together and volunteers their time and skills, year on year, to make it happen.

I loved your video! I laughed, I cried, and now I want to visit even more than I did before watching it. The community spirit that Shetlanders devote to their beloved festival is heartwarming to see. Thank you sharing this delightfully informative video!

I was stationed in Shetland 1973 US Coast Guard Loran Station in Brae, and came upon the festival accidently. I was utterly amazed. Thanks for the background Marjolein . I hope to visit Shetland again.

I absolutely loves your video to explain it perfectly for me! I only knew about it from Netflix Shetland and needed to know more. I’m from an island off Canada, Newfoundland, and we share things I never knew about before. I was fascinated and when the crowd started to sing Sweet Caroline, my name, I almost cried. To know that you have such different and wonderful culture, even though you are Scottish, in a way you are completely separate, like Newfoundlanders and the rest of Canada. We have our own culture and are so proud of it. Thank you again.

I’m reading Black Raven by Ann Cleeves.a book set in the Shetland Islands. Curious about the Up Helly Aa which is referred to a number of times I looked online and found your video! Its great and funny. I was laughing and also appreciating all the work and community spirit that goes jnto it. The novel which i refer to is also quite a good read!

Saw this celebration in the series Shetland. I love traditions and was curious about it. So, I read a lot of articles. But, I have to say this is the best. A very thorough explanation. I am from the United States and I would like to see it in person someday in the future.

I had heard something about it years ago from our distant cousin, Robert Irving when we were in Portugal, he had been up there with the minesweepers, yes that's right, he was in the RN. Watching it on screen sure gave me some of the excitement experienced by the inhabitants and it was interesting to see a Douglas Johnstone although I never add an e on the end of my name but I believe there is a lot of my clan up there

"Often with craftsman-like quality" kinda undersells the fact that HOURS of someones life went into making all of them. With "craftsmen precision" makes it sound a bit better even if its apprentices. I spent TONS of time learning / making something that if it were described as "Jeweler like quality" I'd probably be slightly offended. Either way. Subbed thanks for showing a portion of your heritage that its awesome you guys carry on and semi-modernize!

What a fabulous accent she has and very informative looks like an amazing festival but I’m still unclear why they do it except for fun and a community event for everyone to get busy and make stuff so they are all entertained for months.

It's a strong part of the Shetland culture. There's also stories of some ships of the Spanish Armada crashing on the shores of Shetland -- would explain Marjolein's dark hair. Something like that....
