Up Helly Aa 2019 - your 4 minute tour
Ойын-сауық
Your tour of Lerwick Up Helly Aa 2019, in just 4 minutes.
Europe’s largest fire festival, nearly a century and a half in the making, Inherited and created by generations of Shetlanders.
Up Helly Aa is a superb spectacle, a celebration of Shetland history, and a triumphant demonstration of islanders' skills, spirit and community. It takes several thousand people 364 days to organise. Much of the preparation is in strictest secrecy.
The biggest secret of all is what the head of the festival, the 'Guizer Jarl', will wear and which character from the Norse Sagas he'll represent in each of the 12 Shetland fire festivals held between January and March each year.
Lerwick Up Helly Aa is the largest of our fire festivals, with around 1,000 guizers taking part in the evening procession.

My surname is derived from the Old Norse Kastlog. The Old Scottish word is Castelowe which means roughly throw flame. I've always felt a deep connection with the Shetland. I am told my ancestors are from this region, although I only have relatives left in Glasgow.
Oh how wonderful this is to see.....people doing something together! I haven't seen anything like this in a very long time.
wow this is so cool :-)

Up Helly Aa is not a Norse tradition. It's a Scottish, specifically Shetland, tradition from like the 18th century. However, Up Helly Aa is related to Norse Yule celebrations. We still celebrate Yule in Norse countries.

@@Thor.Jorgensen Surely it is a Norse-influenced tradition.

@@anthonyodonnell6105 Oh yeah, the influence is called Yule or Jul. The tradition of parades didn't exist in the world before about 800 years after the Viking age. And the tradition of carrying torches to parades didn't exist until about 1000 years after the Viking age. Historically, torches were never really a thing. Night-time illumination was expensive. Parades also shouldn't be confused with the Roman triumphs. Parades were a neo-classical reinvention that began in the 1760s and forward, aka the mid-18th century.
Fabulous!
Fascinating. Beautiful
Congratulations to the Nicolson family!;) AND I'm proud to know that they all have chosen to portrait Norwegian vikings! ;)
My name is murchie , from the Gaelic mhurchaidh, murdoch, we are sons and daughters of murdoch mhurchaidh, sea warrior , our name appeared in south uist circa 900 about the time the Norse occupied the islands, and we gradually shifted south to the lowlands for work or were ‘shifted’ , obvious history reasons . Galgaelian. Galgael .
Any drinking take place?

Go Nicolson’s!!!😁
I thought "Up Helly Aa" was a norse phrase but then I realised it's Scots not norse. Up = means rise up kinda, hard to explain. Helly = is Scots word for Holly Aa = Scots word for all Up Helly Aa = Up Holly all
Shame about the helmets

The festivals are a Victorian interpretation, so not necessarily true to viking life. The Jarl (leader) of each festival traditionally wears the same helmet each year, one that has feathered wings.
..
Visually impressive. But all this dressing up as fake Vikings is just a bit preposterous.
