You know, the director of Shadow Hearts, Matsuzo Michida, was interviewed 2 years ago by Italian website GeekGamer. He said that New World is not the true third installment in the series. Shadow Hearts 3 would have been a prequel and you have gotten to play as Yuri's father. That would have been awesome.

I always felt like SH3 could have been a true sequel, considering how the ending of SH2 was a complete mess with Karen's ending and Yuri's travel back in time and the supposed end of the world that was going to happen regardless. Not that I liked the game. That being said, I am still hoping that Karen get a better treatment. I, to this day, still hate the ending she got. Karen > Alice.

wow trust me been praying for this for ages i grew up watching my sister play shadow hearts she let my life brother play this but never LET me play her ps2 me and my brother keep saying to eachother out off all the games id like to play what one would u pick and my pick is shadow hearts and i say i would jump with joy if they remastered it i dont know what it is but the mucic and moments in this game are burned into my memory its crazy

26 years of all platform gaming and this series still has a special place in my heart. Sometimes you just encounter an irreplaceable charm with nothing to prove and a lifetime to give.

Shadow Hearts is my all time fav. I love it to bits. I hope some way, somehow, it can come back to life from The Graveyard... lol

Such great stage music, and the boss music was amazing. When you fight Olga for the first time in the church - - - badass loved how the boss song changed and you just knew shit was about to go down. Shadow Hearts is a series that needs to come back and the main reason Shadow Hearts 1 didn't sell too well is cause it released around the same time as Final Fantasy X and the graphical difference between both those games are actually pretty significant with Final Fantasy in general being a mainstream brand compared to something niche like Shadow Hearts which is why it got overlooked. Convenant is my personal favorite JRPG and although more light-hearted, From The New World is still a fantastic game with great characters and story. I think a lot of people would welcome a remastered collection of the series but I think the reason it was abandoned is cause it was ultimately a financial decision and the fact that it was too niche to make steady profit or enough to continue the series. Its not an impossibility for the franchise to come back as there are a rake of other game series that came back from the dead but it is slim to none based on the history we know about. Its a shame cause I really want Shadow Hearts to come back as it had so much charm with the gameplay, characters, story and aesthetic value. Maybe someday, we can always hope for it to return especially cause I thought that Onimusha was never gonna come back but we actually got a PS4, Xbox One and Switch remaster of it so nothing is impossible.

I can't thank you enough for making this video. My heart felt both nostalgic and sad. Shadow Hearts will ALWAYS be my favorite JRPG series of all time.

Shadow Hearts was an amazing series. It deserves so much more love and a new game. Sad that it'll probably never happen. I'd be happy with a remastered trilogy of the current games.

@Gilgamesh H. Theres actually some good news that Sony has very recently filed a new trademark for the Shadow Hearts IP nearly 3 weeks ago but was only made public in the last few days. That said we don't know the full details on the extent of Sony's plan with the brand but I am willing to bet that it may have something to do with Sony adding a bunch of old titles from all their past gen consoles onto their new PSN streaming service. This is pretty good news for Shadow Hearts cause maybe it will get a 2nd chance on modern platforms with potential of having the old games remastered, remade or even a brand new entry in future. I'd love to see what a new Shadow Hearts game would look like with todays technology so hopefully we get something new in future with the series.

Yeah, it was a series I stumbled upon. Probably the best random buy I've done. I bought Covenant first though I should have bought the second game. It was a 2 for 1 gamestop sale and both were there. I figured it eh if this is good I can always go back for the prequel. Sadly, about that time that I did go for it, the games jacked up in price. Not insane, but they were nearly new prices again. I did not get the first Shadow Hearts until after the third came out. It was kinda funny the game was labeled new, but it rang up used and the used price was more than new. The guy at the register kinda shook his head and fixed it to new. Koudleka has been on my list to play though I doubt I would enjoy the puzzles in the game. In the US, the first Shadow Hearts came out the same time as FFX, so it was going to be overlooked from the get go. As beloved as Covenant was, it does carry a few issues though I will really only cover one: Yuri's return was a blessing and a curse. There are rumors that he was not going to be the main protagonist. It may have been Nicolai. Early promotional video shows him in one spot in the game far after he leaves the party (which had me wondering why they had bothered to make him playable when I first played it), and you can even see additional attack animations for him. He also turns into Yuri's mid level dark form.The game also got a re-release with some new content with at least one dungeon allowing you to control Nicolai and three other characters (a trio of antagonists), but guess what? You guessed it, it was only released in Japan. Still, it was a fun game that was very much the two discs it was on. Yuri's lack of presence in the third turned some off. It was a red flag for me, but reviews and comments that the plot and characters (more so characters than plot) were more light hearted (Covenant had its share though most was relegated to Joachim) made me put it way back on the priority list of buying. I won't say the game is bad, but when I tried it, it was not for me.

YEEEEEES, finally!!! I love Shadow Hearts so much, Covenant is the best JRPG of all time imo, everything is perfect about that game. From the New World, i was a bit sceptical about it first for the same reasons as you said but it is still a great game and i enjoyed it immensely. I know that we will probably never get another SH game but pleaaaase give me Shadow Hearts HD collection on PS4 T_T This franchise deserves more attention, i found out about it by accident cus it was unknown in Europe as you said but damn am i glad that i did The battle system and the judgment ring were awesome features in the game, i love when games do this and makes you do more than just press a button, Legend of Dragoon did an awesome job at this as well with the additions.

Whilst Shadow Hearts probably can't come back, hopefully other developers can take up some of the series ideas and themes. There is a definite space in the market for a fantasy horror RPG, Shin Megami Tensei has been on the handhelds for years and is now exclusive to the Nintendo platfrom, we have no idea when another Persona game is coming. There's definitely room for more RPGs that explore the horror genre, I'd love to see one that goes straight out survival horror with the atmosphere and tone of something like Siren or Rule of Rose.

I really want a remaster of the whole SH trilogy because, i only know of SH3 and not the others, I'd like to, I'd wanna get into them especially SH3 because, I just like that one's cast a lot and just the game in general. so far at least. like i said I haven't played or seen anything about the rest.

I still rmbr the first time I got my hands on shadow hearts. I was hook & really love the theme, story & gameplay. Then came Shadow hearts 2 & it was an even better masterpiece. Wish there is a remake/remaster of both.

Loved this series, I own Koudelka but lost my shadow hearts 1 and 2 :(

Great video! I’ve been waiting for this one for a while. Seems Aruze caught the Konami disease. As for other games in the series in 2010 the creator of the series and it’s character designer made a spiritual successor of sorts called Arms’ Heart for the PSP. However it was once again Japan exclusive and it failed miserably.

Yackael That’s good just such a shame that shadow hearts and any other game the creator makes just becomes a cult game and fades into obscurity.

I've played many obscure games and this is one of my top favs. Yuri is a very underrated anti hero. He comes off as Guts but with demon morphing abilities and practically immortal. He would be perfect in the world of Berserk and vice versa Guts being in the Shadow Hearts world. Mainly the first one. The very first one held nothing back and was goth horror to it's core. Guts, Yuri and Caim from Drakengard are my top 3 fav anti heroes. There all magnificently insane.

Shadow Hearts is an amazing series (New World included)! It has some of the most beautiful music in any game I’ve played and the ring combat system was a mechanic so cool and unique is that I don’t think we’ll ever see again. I think New World’s “problem” definitely was the fact that they leaned a little too much into comedy. Starting with the original SH game there’s always been a bit of humor and with each game it got a little more prominent. When people talk about shadow hearts they talk glowingly mostly about the first game that had such a dark atmosphere. SH 2 mixed the gothic horror and humor evenly. I think New World is a perfectly fine game all things considered but I am certainly see where folks come from. I also think folks just really missed Yuri who was a really fun character with a lot of depth. Seeing him through 2 games gave us more opportunity to care about him and after he was gone it just wasn’t quite the same.

I just finished playing Shadow Hearts a couple days ago, i gotta say that Shadow Hearts Covenant is definitely in my top 3 favorite JRPGs, EVER! I was astonished how awesome it really is when i finished it, i really recommend it for hardcore turn based RPG lovers. Let's all push for an HD Remaster release it totally deserves it! Thanks for helping to spread this gem Erick. Keep up the great work!

Shadow Hearts was my 2nd RPG... and further pushed my love for the genre. Erick it breaks my heart that Aruze is making gambling machines. they could be ruling our lives with Horror RPGS...😣

Thanks for making this video! I had no idea part of the team worked on Lost Odyssey, and I am playing that now! I loved ShadowHearts and didn’t expect anything after Covenant. To me From the New World was a fun goodbye letter from the makers. I remember when playing it that I felt like Johnny was a direct reference to the dev team “fighting the corruption” but lacking the ability to do much without help. In the end, they could not keep that door from opening and had to face the reality that their world was changed. The fetish stuff was a way of telling people to go after their passions.

SH:C is still probably my favorite game ever. I'm not sure if it's problems were really marketing-related, but also distribution-related. The first few years I wasn't even able to buy the game anywhere in Europe, and had to resort to playing a pirated version. Only after a few years did I finally manage to buy the game. If only these games were released in these times where you can just get every game through the PS Store.

I know it, I was a bit late discovering it at a time but thanks to a friend I got all 3 games. 1 and 2 were great then 3 was ... there (seriously) what the hell happened there?), overall a great series, just sad it’s been so overlooked in favour of Final Fantasy 🙁🙁🙁 Thanks for the video Erick (really need it today) and go hug your animal friends folks 💙🐱💙

Never played Shadow Hearts but I was aware it existed. Sometime I think around 2010? I heard of Koudelka and saw that it was real cheap. I got a new copy for about $16. I had now idea it was related to Shadow Hearts until later. Sometime I'd like to try the Shadow Hearts games, but all of them are expensive now, including Koudelka.

Nice vid, mate. First SH is still my fav game in the genre. Never experienced atmo like in that game in any other JRPG. Also... Sure, we most likely will never see another SH game, but for me it's basically the same thing as with FF VII Remake and people who are concerned that it may totally suck... No one will take away the original games that are already here and already among the best.

It's a great game and you can also switch to Japanese voices, so it only makes it better.

Honestly I only have covenant and from the new world but I love shadow hearts it is a fun series to play and I love the architecture the series tries to use to add a sense of realism mixed with fantasy and magic.

We need to make a petition, NOW to XSEED.

I am a huge fan of Shadow Hearts I&II. I bought/played them both on launch. Funny enough, I recently purchased Shadow Hearts III, and I am currently playing through it. Though 3 is very different tonally, it still has the same battle system. I am enjoying it, but I can see why it didn't ride the success of SHII. Really wish the series would come back.

Notice how a lot of the games in these "what the hell happened to" series ended in Sixth generation. Well Shadow Hearts existed entirely in the Sixth generation... unless you count Koudelka. What the hell happened after Sixth gen!?

The HD era...., games became too expensive to make for these smaller development companies, so many of the lesser none jrpg franchises such as Shadow Hearts, either moved to handheld or died.

That and the fact that SNK gathered enough capital to get the rights to their franchises back from Aruze who snapped them up during SNK's Bankruptcy not by buying the rights back but by suing Aruze. SNK won the lawsuit reaquiring the franchises such as Fatal Fury, Samurai Showdown, King of Fighters, and Metal Slug. The move also left Aruze in such dire financial straits that they had to disolve Nautilus, as for pachinko machines, the are a safe bet for gaming companies in Japan- or at least they were. Last year the Japanese government passed a new series of laws to crack down on the loopholes that Pachinko Parlors had been using to skirt around the gambling laws, coincidentally this has also made some companies like Konami revaluate their current strategy as it would cost their company a great deal of money.

Actually, a insider said back in 2015 that SIEJ is in talk to get something done with it. It hadn't even began pre-production. He is not sure if SIEJ can solve this problem as he also said they were in talk with Capcom to get more Monster Hunter on PS4 and we got Monster Hunter World. So he knew what he was talking about. After this information some Italian game journalist interviewed Shadow Hearts creator, Machida-san, and character designer, Kato-san. Machida-san said he is working on a new game and can't provide any details yet. In the future he would like to make a Western adaptation of it. A remastered collection of Shadow Hearts series (the first two games he worked on) have no plans but he will talk with his staff about it. This interview was published on Jan 2 2016. Can be found on Gematsu if you search for "Shadow Hearts creator". Machida-san left Nautilus before the spin-off was in the works. He freelanced a lot. He wrote the story and events for Ninety Nine Nights 2. Created Arms' Hearts with Kato-san and was developed by Hamster. After that we get this interview in early 2016.

@@ErickLandonRPG You're welcome. This was before I started to hear more leaks about PS5's launch window. Foxy Games UK on youtube has some good early info from Sony on the launch window and specs in the hardware. He has said before in 2017 that Sony has created a new studio for PS5. He didn't mentioned in which country. So it's kind of an open field. My attention is from this year in about 2 months ago Foxy Games UK spilled the beans on his podcast to MadZ Gamer. There is a first party game in PS5's launch window that looks as good if not better than FF Spirits Within and Advent Children movie. You can expect that in the first gen of PS5. I know JAPAN Studio is working on a hard sci-fi game with story choice so it's not RaySpace he is talking about because that is a major PS4 title to be announced soon. This has also FF reference and one of them in Japan to come close to Nomura's character design is Miyako Kato. So I wonder if New Shadow Hearts from Verendus list has connection to what Foxy Games UK has heard. I'm not saying they are making a straight Shadow Hearts 3 because Machida said command based games are not popular today. However, it's possible they are revamping the franchise. It might not live up to old fans expectations similar to how GOW was not technically GOW4 as they changed the gameplay completely. Gone was the arcade style level based GOW with QTE combat. I don't think it will upset fans that much as long as Machida goes even darker now with his story. New audience will also be introduced. With Sony's marketing it will not be overlooked if the team put all their soul into it. I can also believe this due to Monolith Soft's grow. Sony is started to feel threatened by Nintendo's RPG domination. Sony used to have two RPG teams on PS1. Arc Entertainment and The Legend of Dragoon team. In-house RPGs were received better than their external RPGs developed by other studios they pushed hard on PS2.

Just emulated these on my PC, going through Shadow Hearts now!

I loved them. I only played though them the one time though and it was back in the PS2 days so it's hard to know how much I like them now. But at the time I though the 2nd one pacifically was one of the closest games to been as good as final fantasy. Ever since I got into Final Fantasy I would always try to find something as good as them.

Yeah I enjoyed shadow hearts 1 I would love to go back and enjoy this one ps4 to ps2 and look back at those days.

Good video, but you left out the part about the potential SH3 game that never was. There was even concept art released 2 years ago of Yuri and Kurando's father, who were going to be the main protagonists. Anyway, Matsuzo Machida (director of Covenant) said he's working on a new secret game since 2016, so who knows. Might be a spiritual successor to the SH series. One can only hope.. :')

I only played the last game. For me was bizarre, but not THAT bad. It got it from a friend, purely as a really obscure RPG. We're fans of JRPGS, me and him used to play any JRPG we came across. Obscure, known, bad, good. Here in Argentina its not a main genre.

Not that much. You see, "research" here is the key word. I only research superficially on the franchises, maybe I dig a little here and there and often find some interesting information that went below a lot of people's radars, but the truth is that I am not a researcher nor am I a historian and these videos are still about 50% (or more) my opinion. Also, I've followed most of these franchises almost since they began, or at least since many, many years ago, so a big part of my "reseach" has just been my watching their evolution over time, therefore becoming, once again, something subjective. The point of making these videos is to encourage people to share their own opinion, thoughts and also their research to create a discussion on what the hell happened to these franchises. This is something that has worked pretty well, since some gamers have come to share their own information since I started making them, so I'm happy about that. Thanks for watching and commenting!

What I was trying to say is Atsushi Morita who is president of SIEJA worked in the business department of Aruze when Shadow Hearts was made. He has contacts with Aruze. So who knows if a new Shadow Hearts is possible.

It's really sad, I really love the games and even with pcsx2 being really good, there are glitches in shadow heart series so they're not perfectly playable even today. The Lost Odissey situation is also a mess, how can Microsoft still not making PC version of it? Even resonance of fate, tales series, atelier series, etc now making their way to steam, and Microsoft is sleeping with Lost Odissey and Blue Dragoon on their hands 😭

It's such a shame because i LOVE Historical Fiction. The first two games were so good about telling the stories of characters who were not only struggling with their adventure but the times changing all around them with war and society. How everything was changing all around them despite their efforts. The third game in the series... well... it had some ok ideas but... half the cast was just unneeded.

Ya know a few old ps2, ps3 and PS 4 have been remastered and re released on modern consoles like Nintendo Switch and X Box One. Shining Resonance, Tales of Vesperia, Ys VIII, Valkerya , Mega Man X. So there is still some hope!

I miss Shadow Hearts. 😢😭

After 2 years really wanting to play the first one, I got a decent price for SH1, played and finished, and oh boy, I never saw any Jrpg with so bizarre atmosphere and vibes like this one. Did the both "good" and "bad" ending. I hope someday i will be playing the sequel,the covenant one. And maybe the "from the world" game,which is more considered as spin-off then sequel. But still, I want a HD collection for these three games, a remake or sequel would be a dream,since the company only cares about f* pachinko machines. I really hope we get something from this series in the future, after I heard that this series was kinda a sequel for kouldelka, I went crazy trying to find a way to play this series. And yes I think the franchise it is extremely, BUT extremely unknown and underrated by people on these days.... Sorry if I writed too much😅. I'm a 22 year old dude, just trying to show how much I find interesting SH1, in comparison for others JRPG's. I really do hope this series gets something in the future!

need to be on PSN store but we have to either have a ps2 or use a emulator (which is a pain to set up)

Is it alright that I like Shadow Hearts From the New World mostly for its gameplay and silliness? You could do some really insane combos in there more easily (since you don't need to pair two characters one turn ahead of time to do a combo.) And I mean...Ricardo and his guitar...I want that guitar.

And as hard as it was to have 3 be the last one, about that hard for me to watch shadow hearts everlasting without some tears running out of my eyes

I never thought of "Shadow Hearts from the new world" as comic relief, expect for frank, the released malice and roger + the bad ending of it they could have connect it to new SH4 by "time", time element is what all party members used in SH2 , but . . It's now a dim hope, unless there's fanmades and new projects

Koudelka and all three of the Shadow hearts games need a remaster . Shadow hearts has to be my favorite games of all time . Lost Oddisy was another good one. Speaking of good games where the heck is the remaster of Chrono Cross .

tell me if this have some point: Yuri returned in time, the the paradox erase him making him disappear gradually, so only his "voice" can be listen until he was fully erasesd and his voice made him save Alice at any costs, making you have the good ending in the SH1. I am Crazy??

Shadow Hearts came out the same month that FFX did. That didnt help it either.

Did anyone else get that killer was yuri post mistletoe curse and lady was alice post death? Never was said but obvious. S.H. to this day remains my favorite series period. This was the best and saddest love story I’ve ever witnessed.

I dont understand why people are so negative about "from the new world". I loved that game! The tragic events of Johney and his sister, the colourfull setting, the goofyness and of course the gameplay, were all very good.

This is a game series that really need a remaster on ps4. These are the best Rpgs of all time and more people need to be able to enjoy them.

SH1 and 2 are a dark fantasy JRPG with some great humors in both the Japanese and English dub version XD

this series was totally unknown over here i picked up the first game in 3 for 2 sale mainly bc i enjoyed midway games and rpgs it was the other 2 games i got that i really wanted shadow hearts was the free game which i thought be fun but i loved it and picked up the sequels as soon as i saw them

I love Shadow Hearts, but I have only beaten the first one, still the other 2 to play!

Aurze also hold the rights to steam bot chronicles one of my favorite JRPGs aside from shadow hearts and we never got a sequel to that game neither 😭.
