I originally played Shining Force 1 and 2 when I was 23. I still play them today on my PS4 on the Sega Classics collection and never get tired of them and I'm 47 now. It's a shame the series has lost its identity over the years and continues to get worse. These new developers seem to have no idea how to cater to the fans of the originals.

Me and my friend doesn't read any Japanese yet we played the Shining force1 whole summer, you can tell how good the game is at this point. That's some best memory of our life... I'm playing Shining force 2 on my switch for MD classics now. First time really get to know what the story is about.

Shining Force 3 is my favorite game of all time. It's a tragedy that that was (essentially) the end of the series. Thank God for fan translations, which allow us to play all 3 Scenarios in English. I think the only possible way the series could be revived, is if Sega and Camelot ever kiss and make up, which will probably never happen. I don't really have any hope of Sega so much as trying to make a game that is truly in the style of a Shining Force game. And, frankly, that boggles my mind. With the success of Fire Emblem, why the hell isn't ANYONE trying to get into that market? Shining Force even seems like the most obvious contender.

I see that many people miss the old Shining Force titles as much as I do. SF 2 was the favorite game of my childhood. That being said, most tactical RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics didn't really appeal to me because they don't have the world exploration that SF does. So I decided to share with you a list of games, which I think SF fans might enjoy, though not all of them are tactical RPGs. - King's Bounty series. This is a game from Russian developers, but it combines big world exploration and tactical battles. Also the game has a very nice atmosphere like in fairy tales, which resembles SF too. The soundtrack is also great. The best entries in the series are The Legend, Crossworlds, and Dark Side. - Fire Emblem series. This series is the first one that comes to mind when we talk about where the developers of SF drew inspiration for combat mechanics from. While it doesn't have a large world to explore, the latest entries (Echoes, Three Houses, Engage) have small locations that you can explore, interact with NPCs, and even do quests. - Dragon Quest series. If Fire Emblem can be called the “father” of SF, then the DQ series is its “mother”. One of the key SF developers worked on DQ games earlier in the 80's, so the influence is very clear. It's a traditional JRPG (without tactics), but the moment you run it, you immediately get a sense of the same atmosphere as in Shining Force 1-2. Story, characters, dialogues, music - everything here is reminiscent of SF! For those who are not familiar with the series, I would recommend starting with the last entry - DQ 11. On the one hand, it has beautiful modern graphics, but on the other hand, it stays true to its roots. - Golden Sun & GS The Lost Age. This is a series of also traditional JRPGs without tactics, but developed by Camelot - i.e. the same company that previously developed SF. And the developers themselves positioned it as a «spiritual successor of SF». Also, many reviewers included GS games in the list of the best RPGs of all time (see, for example, IGN top 100 RPGs list). - Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky FC & SC. It's also a traditional JRPG, but you can move your characters around the field, so tactics are important here, especially in the later parts of the game. The most important thing is the atmosphere and the story, fans of retro JRPGs should be very pleased! I also enjoyed «Trails from Zero» and «Trails to Azure», but they have a more modern setting, hence they have less in common with SF. As for «Trails of Cold Steel» saga, I found it very long, tedious and self-repeating, so I wouldn't recommend starting with it. - Mario + Rabbids series. Despite the rather childish style, the tactical gameplay in the game is quite deep, reminiscent of XCOM, and exploring the world is interesting as there are many secrets hidden in it. And lastly here are a few more tactical RPGs that feature world exploration: - Guid Saga Vanished Worlds. An upcoming indie game that combines world exploration and tactical battles similar to Divinity Original Sin with the visual style of a JRPG. Looks very promising. - Wandering Sword. Chinese tactical JRPG about martial arts in HD-2D style similar to Octopath Traveler. Has a large world to explore. - Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk. Tactical RPG from a French indie studio in which your squad of 8 characters explores dungeons. The game has a cartoony style and a lot of humor, and in this regard it is also somewhat similar to SF. - Arc the Lad 2. A Japanese tactical JRPG from the PS1 era. Also combines tactics with world exploration.

Shining Force is one of my top 5 RPG series. It's sad to see what has become of it. And like you said, it's one of those series that was never truly appreciated outside Japan, which explains why most of the games never saw the light of the day outside Japan. @@mrfreeman2911 I can list off a few for you, but I agree with your sentiment; that genre needs a lot more love in the indie scene, especially since indie devs have recently revived both 2D Sonic games and the Streets of Rage franchise. I'd look into Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark for sure. I found it on accident a few months ago and put in over 50 hours in a few days during the two weeks off I got for Christmas from my job. A few others I've encountered are the Banner Saga and Fae Tactics. Banner Saga was an indie darling that really set itself a part with an art style that evoked both the Norse mythology it based itself on and 80s fantasy animation (think like Rankin & Bass's notorious Lord of the Rings and Hobbit animated films). I have both but have only played the first one. I wasn't overly impressed as it just felt kinda clunky to me but maybe you'll enjoy it more. Still haven't gotten around to the second one, mostly because I hate completing games out of order, by and large. I don't know much about Fae Tactics just yet. I have another game from the dev called Valdis Story. It's a sidescrolling action game with heavy metroidvania elements and a light RPG infrastructure, but the story and aesthetic remind me of a much more brightly colored, anime inspired Hollow Knight. I really love the game, and Fae Tactics looks really good. It's on sale now on GOG so I'll probably pick it up, but at this point I can only hope it's as good as it looks.

WHAT?! I am an SF fan and I thought SF2 was a strict improvement. It was the first game, but with a longer story, more characters, more spells, a more expansive world you can freely explore complete with an inter-dimensional portal gateway to go between continents (no Elder Scrolls or open world, but still superior to SF1) and better art and production values. Those were mostly superficial things, but it is an example of what an indirect sequel should be. The storytellers in one of the later towns in SF2 tie Darksol, Dark Dragon and Zeon together so even though it is 95% indirect, there is that Easter Egg along with a poorly translated Chaos Breaker.

It indeed was an improvement, but only gamemechanicwise. It played better than SF1, which always (and still) feels a bit slow and stiff. But story- and characterwise SF1 was much better. The charas are more orginal and the story is more epic. While SF1 is the tale about saving the world from ancient evil, SF2 is a Disney ride about saving a princess and defeating a meaningless baddie. Or as stated above, SF1 is LOTR and SF2 is Hobbit. The REAL improvement is SF3. Maybe the Charas lack a bit of Yoshitaka Tamakis character design ingeniousness (look at Feda), but game mechanics, music, battle system and most notably the story is superb!

Only thing I think you missed in the video was that there was another Shining Road phone game released around the same time as the Chronicle-Gaiden remakes, called Priestess of the Dark Dragon. Very decent summary, I hope that the series will come back as a full-fledged SRPG, but the originals are fun to replay regardless.

Later I picked up the Sega CD SF and it was AWESOME! Still is. This is a series I need to revisit having played so few. I love the original style and considering FF tactics was/is popular I'm surprised this style wasn't returned to hard core.

Sega dumbed the series down after they split from Camelot. The art style now is by Tony Taka, a notorious hentai artist. They did this to attract lonely weebs without having to have a compelling story or gameplay. The most "shining" the new games get is dumb names with the word Shining in them.

To make this series profitable and resurgent they should develop a remaster of the original 2 games and the 3rd and pair that with the release of Shining Force IV not long after. I think you can only expect people to come running back by officially naming it and releasing a fourth game in the main franchise and not add a bunch of silly terms and alternate names to make it seem like an offshoot. I would bet Shining Force IV sells.

Alright, text wall incoming. My first exposure to this franchise was a copy of the original game owned by a super nice video game collector that used to babysit me when I was a kid back in the late 80s and through the mid 90s. He sparked my love of my collecting games and video game stuff. I was always in awe of him because, while my family had an NES, he had everything that was available at the time and that would be available through most of the 90s. Despite having a Genesis later on I'd not actually play Shining Force until I got the original one on a small collection of Sega games for PC in the late 90s or early '00s that also included games like Sonic 3 and a few others. My dad found it at like a Wal-Mart or K-Mart and brought it home for my two younger brothers and I. Our initial interest in the disc was Sonic 3 since we'd played the hell out of 1 and 2 on our Genesis, but one day we decided to try Shining Force and the 3 of us, my youngest brother and I in particular, just fell in love with it. It was a game that we played over and over and over again, cuz back in those days my family was quite poor and of course we didn't have things like Steam sales and trade in was just becoming a thing. I've now got SF II on the Genesis Collection on Steam and am actively playing through it, which is indirectly what lead me to this video. I was searching for something else related to the franchise and this was pretty high on the results list for my search. I have been loving the hell out of the game, though the dialogue and story are bit incoherent, thanks in particular to some noticeably bad localization. SF III seems to be a myth almost due to the incomplete NA release and how badly the Saturn shat itself, making the console and its games pretty damn difficult to find to begin with. I sincerely hope that Sega can be talked into making a special rerelease of a completed version of SF III, or hell they can even just full on remake it, but it needs to be more accessible. I didn't see hide nor hair of the series myself until I came across of a copy of SF EXA in my local Wal-Mart several years ago. I was thrilled the to see the SF name again but quickly became concerned as the art didn't resemble what I'd played to that point. I got home and looked up some reviews and gameplay videos online and ended up being pretty crestfallen when I saw the middling reviews combined with gameplay that reminded me entirely too much of Dynasty Warriors. I hadn't played a Diablo game at that time so I certainly wouldn't have made that connection, but I still would have been disappointed even then as I'd formed a love affair with SRPGs by that time thanks to the FFTA games.. At any rate, fast forward several years. I'm employed at GameStop and we get a copy of ProjectXZone in. I'm intrigued, especially because of the companies involved in the crossover and because it's at least partially a SRPG. I figured given that Sega was involved and what kind of game it was that Max might be a playable character. I was deeply disappointed when I found who was actually included from the SF series and wasn't even able to finish that game on account of how drawn out the battles became the further you got into it. I had very much wondered what happened to the series and, while I knew that Camelot had developed the Golden Sun games (also favorites of mine), I had no idea that they abandoned SF entirely to do it, or that the franchise struggled so much here in the States. As has been mentioned, the tactical style of RPG has regained a lot of steam thanks to Fire Emblem, so let's hope that Sega chooses revive this series by taking it back to its roots.

My friends and I all played the hell out of the original Shining Force, and SF II when they were new. I was more of a Nintendo guy, but stuff like this was a massive reason to have a Genesis... which I luckily also had, along with the Sega CD. Most of my friends had a SNES, some had Genesis, but only I had the Sega CD... which means I was the only one enjoying stuff like Lunar. Always thought Shining Force CD was lame though. Not as a game... the game is alright, but it's more basic than the two Genesis games, being a remake of the Game Gear games. No towns or any exploration, just battle, battle battle... that's the main point of a SF game anyway so it's still okay, but it seems like a Sega CD game should do more than port a Game Gear game in such a basic format. I guess we got better music or something, and I think maybe the intro had voice acting? Wish we had a "real" Shining Force CD with some animated cutscenes and voice acting and stuff like that. I love the hell out of CD RPGs from that era... Ys on Turbo CD are all amazing.. Lunar, Vay, Snatcher, stuff like that hits all the nostalgia buttons for me. The thing I love the most is the voice acting. It's usually shitty, but I guess it's the right kind of shitty... again, nostalgia...
