This video saved me so much trouble. I recently bought a 33 inch baritone guitar with a floyd and couldn't find strings that were long enough. You're a complete legend for this.

Good video. I’d like to add that I’ve found the Winspear string tension calculator to be very helpful when paired with the stringjoy one, because the Winspear one compensates for longer scale length with their “feel match” recommendation. In this case, tension increases as scale length increases so that the bends feel the same. For me, I find that I like heavier tension than most. Specifically, 11-54 on my 24.75” Les Paul in standard tuning. In this case, this puts me at having my 30” scale tuned to F1 with a 90 gauge. The tension is higher, but that F1 sings and it’s not as hard to play as one would expect. It feels right for my taste.

String joy is my goto for almost everything. If you have anything bizarre like 33” scale length or super long basses Kalium will offer even longer / thicker strings.

I can't count the amount of times I had to unwind the strings like at 7:20 haha . Didn't realize you mixed those 2 sets up, that's sick. I wish the website had an auto function where you could set your tuning and it automatically sets the gauge for you to something balanced. Great as always my man!

Yeah its hard to automate it, cos personal preference for string tension comes into play. But that would make it easier :)

I've found that the trick is to use the lightest guage you can stand . Currently running stringjoy baritone 58s in G1 standard on an Ibanez src6 30" scale. BB King tension is 12.1 lbs on the low string running 8-38s on a 24.75" scale.

Yeah you get a brighter tone with lighter gauges. Also depends on your picking hand. If you pick really hard, with lighter gauges its gonna go a bit sharp from a heavy picking hand. Like me. Haha!

I been doing. just this very thing with the string joy tension calculator for years now with my 30 inch scale baritones. The best part is once you figure out your custom gauge you can order a custom set from string joy for the same price as any other set of those strings. In my experiences all with string through body bridges, they have seemed to fit perfectly, The winding gets over the nut, and ends before the tuning keys.

You might want to try the Fender .100 - .024 set instead.

Excellent info! Subscribed. I've got a HB JA Baritone 30". Q: I put my ddadario XL156 in the string calc and they tensions are all over the place. Check it - 84. 72, 56, 44, 34 24. Drop D- but the calc starts at E0 so I use that. Maybe my octave designations are off? E0 A0 D1 G2 B2 E3. Seems right.

See, its informative but confusing. Im trying to go down to DDD# on my 27" 7 string and apparently i need a .105? String gauges are confusing haha.

Yeah you'll need a super thick gauge on a 27inch if you wanna go down to Double Drop D#. Or you could use a lighter gauge and pick a bit softer
