What STOPPED These Pistons From FAILING?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Jeremy Wagler builds serious Diesel engines - 3,000+ Horsepower diesel engines! So when his engines started failing within the first race, they started looking for answers. One simple change, invisible to the naked eye, allowed these 3,000 Horsepower engines to run 30 races without a failure.

    My first experience with a 6.7 Cummins was a previous failure from another local machine shop. I had just switched over to diamond and cbn hones. Made a call to Total Seal and took notes. It was unnerving seeing the change in the cylinder wall surface finish. It worked. Was able to follow up with a few more 6.7 engines and bought a profilometer. When you see top rings that are just .015- .020 thicker than the oil control rings it forces recognition for change. I’ve honed on blocks since 1991 at four different shops in three separate states. There were no differences between methods or grit choices between any of them. Things have changed.

    Haha nice head gasket😂 I did that once ,on a vw diesel. It blew right out of the #3 and made a heck of a noise like i had jake brakes. It was dark out of course,and when we pulled over and looked around it wasnt obvious. So i told my buddy to bump the key. Splash, i got like a quart of coolant blasted all over my lower half. Hey i found the problem 😂 Thats when i figured out that an injector pump that would be really strong for a 1.9 was just a little much for a 1.6. Fun while it lasted until replacing gaskets all the time got old.

    We need a video on the bottom line of 0W-8 oil on the new Toyota's. My 2024 Toyota Corolla LE I purchased last week (Mar 2024) has the "dreaded" 0W-8 sticker. This grade of engine oil is hard to find (even at Toyota dealerships) and expensive. Is 0W-16 OK to use long term? 🤔 Owners need to know.

    It could cause pre-ignition.

  • @nerd1000ify

    @nerd1000ify

    In spark ignition engines 2T oil acts as an octane rating depressant. Hence pre-ignition mentioned by Lake Speed. Diesels can't pre-ignite because they don't inject fuel until they want it to ignite. Adding 2T oil to diesel fuel is common practice for vintage engines whose injection pumps can't cope with the lower lubricity of modern ultra low sulfur fuel. But it doesn't do anything for the piston and rings. The same benefits can be had by adding some biodiesel as well.

    I actually I was wondering if you couldn’t just get by with a total seal second ring and running no oil rings. With boost try to blow everything back to the pan anyway maybe it would be a minimal enough amount getting into the chamber when not running hard to be ok?

    Lots of them, watch more engine builder and race channels. Also you can get close with math. At the drag race strip, knowing the car weight, approximate aerodynamic drag, elapsed time and trap speed, you can use that information to calculate the approximate energy required to hit those numbers, and from that you can calculate the approximate horsepower the engine is delivering to the wheels.
