In this week's report, I focus on the question of what your blood pressure goal should be if you are age 60 or older. I place the study in the context of what's already known about the topic. I provide recommendations and practical tips based on the study's findings. And I tell you what I personally do.

    The estimate of numbers of people with high blood pressure is flawed. I have never ever seen blood pressure taken correctly in a doctor’s office. Waiting rooms are noisy and medical assistants are rude. They never give you time alone in a quiet room to calm down and meditate. I refuse blood pressure checks for these reasons.

    You missed an important factor, stress. I am 78, I don’t smoke, drink, not obese but I have a paunchy tummy. I don’t eat outside food, I am sedentary. My bp is 150-165, 80-90. I say most high blood stems from stress listening to drs mouthing dire warnings. Just live in moderation, do what you enjoy.

    Yes stress is definitely an important contributor to blood pressure. But I disagree with the philosophy of "everything in moderation" or "doing what you enjoy." You don't smoke in moderation. Just because it exists doesn't mean we have to do it.

    Most of our foods, do contain lots of salt. Salt, is very bad for those with high blood pressure. The FDA, has contacted food companies to lower the sodium that they put into our foods. That is a good move, on their part. Even with this, there is still too much salt in our foods. I'm 64 and my cardiologist told me, to keep my blood pressure at 140 and under.

    Yes there is definitely too much salt in the American diet. The best way to ensure you aren't eating too much salt is to prepare your own food.

    *Another side question* Last year my doctor sent me to the local hospital (Te Kuiti) for X-Rays on both knees and the results came back negative, although my knees sound like rice bubbles - crackling but crunchy. I can hear the crunching sound when I walk, even with stethoscope My doctor and I can hear the noise! What can my doctor and do? Send me to the regional Hospital (Waikato) for a MRI? I wonder if there are any great studies which take one older group(60-80) with moderately high BP(systolic 140-160) but with very good health and lifestyle factors(of course including, but not only(stressmanagment for instance!) your recommendations) and compare their ACM and CV incidences with a same age and same BPlevel group with average health and lifestyle factors( which sadly are far from good as we all know!)? I suspect this should show a significant better ACM for the first group compared to the second one. If i am right you cannot at all regard the first one as BPsick and put them on medications as much as for the second group!

    How do you define a "high" sodium diet?

  • @myfamilydoc

    @myfamilydoc

    Жыл бұрын

    Americans eat on average about 3,400 mg of sodium per day. However, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends adults limit sodium intake to less than 2,300 mg per day-that's equal to about 1 teaspoon of table salt! If you have high blood pressure, I would limit sodium to less than 1,500 mg per day.

I can’t understand how one can get through medical school and fail at basic math... ...and who cares about the “all cause mortality” of a tribe living in the jungle. Modern people don’t die nearly as often from snake bites or being eaten by a jaguar. This video highlights how ridiculous modern medicine has become such as the AMA’s insistence that BP should be 120/80 regardless of age because the medal platforms in track and field sports are being dominated by athletes in their 70s. Come on. Let’s get real.
