What Should You Do With Your Life?

Finding purpose in life is the struggle almost every adult goes through.
Most of us have no clue what we want to do with our lives. Even after we finish school. Even after we get a job. Even after we’re making money. Between ages 18 and 25, I changed career aspirations more often than I changed my underwear. And even after I had a business, it took another four years to clearly define what I wanted for my life.
Chances are you’re like me and have no clue what you want to do. It’s a struggle almost every adult goes through. “What do I want to do with my life?” “What am I passionate about?” “What do I not suck at?” I often receive emails from people in their 40s and 50s who still have no clue what they want to do with themselves.
But here’s the thing: what we value changes over time, our priorities shift and we redirect our paths. So a better question to ask is: if this was the last day of your life, would you feel good about what you’re doing? For more questions and ideas on finding your life purpose, watch this video. My mom was an art teacher for 25 years or so and finally retired. She moved to Arizona, lives near a big assortment of all ages (still mostly older though). Started a rock painting business/bikes everyday and says she feels like she’s just starting her life. I asked her “but don’t you think teaching was your life purpose?” And she said, “it was and now I have a new purpose. Your entire life doesn’t end just because it’s been x amount of years of doing something.... unless I wanted to stop growing” growth or moving past stagnation are ultimately the main life purposes as people since we tend to want more than what we have. That’s why Jeff bezos keeps trying to make money even though he could.. stop and be fine. He wants to keep advancing. That’s why you can retire and still have 40+ years of good life that’s meaningful. There’s purpose all over. It’s just harder to grasp being young tbh

I had 4 careers and started an sold a business and retired 2 years ago at 52. I never knew what i wanted to do, or my purpose. I still don't. A while back you wrote about finding your passion, which probably entails finding a job that doesn't suck so you can make some money and do what you love. I love that angle on this conversation about life's purpose. My desire was to be home for dinner every night and hang out with my kids and family as much as possible. You can't easily monetize that. I love the beach also, and am damn good at it. Money? Nope. So there are different ways to skin this cat. The old saying "if you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life." Right. If you're one of those 26 ppl in the world who makes big coin doing what you love, congrats. If you're like the rest of us, what you love and what you do for work maybe aren't the same thing.

Are we really just people or something much more... something inside human body called soul? Why when someone dies we say: "He/She left...." Who left, where does he/she left?! If we are not this body, but soul, does it change something in our life? Does God exist? Who we really are and where are we from? Why do we strive for happiness and eternal life? That are very important questions and even more important answers we should be looking for...

My purpose right now is to take it one day at a time and find value in what I do every day. Some days it's helping a colleague with a tedious task at work, other days it's chatting with a friend who feels down, other days I just read a good book and share some key ideas with friends or family who might benefit or smile (depending on the book) other times I drift away in hours of meaningless comedy shows with no expectations. I find all have their meaning that day so I'm not currently looking for a higher purpose than that. Loved the video! Thanks ❤👍

Excellently put. Just a couple more things from my personal experience: 1) Build plenty of physical energy: quality sleep, food that doesn't give you a belly and some exercise. 2) Value emotional self responsibility, rational precission and talking to yourself as if you were someone you care. If you try to go for your purpose without those, the chances to be miserable will be very high, even if you get what you want. Also it's of great help for not being too missrable even while you don't find that purpose.

It sounds kind of vague but that's what is great about it to me, I can learn about sports, finance, wrestling, music, comedy, movies, politics, different ways to approach people, and the list goes on. I used to stress this question a lot because I thought at 14 I knew what I wanted to do when I became an adult and that was be a sports broadcaster and writer . That passion stayed in me for about 5 years and then when I was actually attempting to get into it full force I felt no real excitement in the work I was doing or energy to push through even though I know it is work at times. Now I've come to a point where I've pulled back and stopped pressing so hard about what my purpose is and taking each day as they come and have found myself much happier.

I really like your videos, Mark. You make it so simple and easy to understand. This one made me look at the word "life purpose" in a different light from how I saw it before. You just made me realise that I wasn't asking myself the right questions which is why I've been feeling so lost about my purpose.

I feel like a lot of this is socially constructed. With the way our education system and society is structured, the idea is "You have to figure out what you want to do at 17 or 18, so you can go to college, make it happen, and then do said one thing for the rest of your life." And, anything other than that is looked down on. You don't know what you want, don't want to go to college?, You changed your major again, You don't have a job in your field of choice the day you graduate, or God forbid, don't graduate "on time," and people look at you like you've failed at life. That is the message we get from a very young age. Then, we get to adulthood where we struggle with this idea that "I'm however old and still have no idea what I want to do." Then we think there's something wrong with us, rather than that we were taught something wrong.

I also like doing a good job at work, having fun, and to help people when I can. lately I've realized that it's less about what I want to do and more about what I can do for others. what seems to come more easily to me than others? what do I not mind doing that most people can't tolerate? maslow's hierarchy of needs helps encourage a grounding perspective. thanks!

In my experience, I used to feel like I lack purpose when I saw a peer who I thought was way ahead of me, the nice car, the perfect partner, the typical stuff, you know. Then I would start asking myself why I did not have these things although I was working hard and was trying to be the best I can be. Then I read your book and the part about the values and I realized I was focused on the wrong things by trying to catch up without knowing how to.

Fuck Mark, thank you. Your strategies and assertions around normalizing tough questions like the one contained in this clip have been very helpful in relieving a significant amount of stress with unhealthy anxiety in my life. When I first heard of you and your book, I was just getting into Aubrey Marcus’s “Go for your Win” Course. Long story short, I have a lot of respect for AB and while reading the Subtle Art, I slowly realized that for all kinds of reasons I was in fact living my dream. As well, it took me a couple of months to absorb the concept that am just another person with aspirations on this planet and that’s ok. I will be working on Letting go of the need to be special the rest of my life; however, just the realization of this concept is a huge freedom that I am very grateful for. Be well:)

Or being a poet? So many things I find fucking important we try to find 1 and exclude the rest. It's priority. It's allowing yourself to have more than one thing you give a flying fuck about. I want to help people, but I need help myself first. To be independent and able to stand on my own feet. I am definitely co dependent and I'm trying to get better....
