    Here is my summery of the issue, and what has been the issue for 20, almost 30 years. They were never intended to be 'kiddie cartoons'. The original shorts were from an era when the cartoons played before movies, and were intended to amuse everyone in the family, parents and children. they don't work the same when dumbed down enough to be for just little kids.

    @@benmalsky9834 I suppose that is true, and what I called dumbing down, I will admit, on retrospection, is at least partially modern censorship and sensibilities disallowing the levels of cartoon violence they used to have. That said, honestly, look at the recent decades use of the characters. Crossovers with Willy Wonka? Wizard of Oz? Hell, all the way back to the 'Tom and Jerry: The Movie', these were clearly aimed at a younger audience, with little to appeal to the parents that would be watching along. The old shorts were, and are, timeless, and still watched to this day. The movies I mentioned are more or less fodder for people like Nostalgia Critic who rip into bad movies. Even if 'it's aimed at kids' were a valid excuse for low quality, which it is not, my real point is that the newer content is not aimed at all ages, but younger kids, specifically.

    6:10 It's, like, dumb to follow that rule when this girl is one of main characters. In Tom & Jerry series, humans were briefly appearing to push Tom or Jerry into doing something, not as some really important characters, thus showing their faces would just shift the attention where it wasn't needed. But in this film, humans are something bigger, REAL characters who interact and have some personality deeper than owner of the house where Tom and Jerry live in. The problem is that Tom & Jerry don't really fit into some serious 1 and half hour long movie with some deep character development, and not that they show faces of humans or something like that.

  • @ringapol

    @ringapol

    6 ай бұрын

    I agree that the characters in this movie are likable people. But they are so unique that after watching you may not remember their names. I think Tom and Jerry can confidently be involved in a feature film. Let's say Tuffy (aka Nibbles). According to the plot, he may be kidnapped by bad cats led by Butch. And Thomas will have to help Jerry save his friend. Of course, you can’t just think of why he would do this hahaha. But what I'm trying to say is that our cat and mouse can be 100% the main characters in a feature film. Since childhood, I liked the fact that in this series the viewer looks at the human world through the eyes of animals. When there are people with open faces in the frame, the camera is aimed at them. And Tom and Jerry are at the bottom of the frame. It looks like disrespect to them... It makes sense

    That is false. Humans have often been major characters in the franchise and have been staples to the duo's roles and personalities as characters. Humans have ALWAYS been real characters who interacted with the duo and played off with their personalities and mayhem. They were commonly targets for Jerry to survive under the same roof and even enlist Tom as their loyal acquaintance who they expect to reward if he does his job. The cartoons were not just entirely violence with no plot or substance. All of the tropes were in the film.

  • @ringapol

    @ringapol

    6 ай бұрын

    @@thecriticalthinkeroutsidet4947 This is an erroneous judgment. If you start counting the episodes from all the Tom and Jerry projects, there will be many more episodes without human participation. (but who needs to do that?) And no, people are minor characters. Often even the background for the main participants in the action - animals. And that's okay. Only Mammy was a truly important and colorful character, on whose participation the plot was based.

  • @thecriticalthinkeroutsidet4947

    @thecriticalthinkeroutsidet4947

    @ringapol The usual premise of the original Tom and Jerry cartoons was a plot involving getting rid of the mouse (a.k.a. Jerry) out of the house. Many of the original cartoons involved the characters sharing their spotlight with humans who typically act as the straight-man for the duo. From falling into their destructive mayhem to having interactions with them. Mammy Two-Shoes was also not the only human in the franchise, let alone even the only owner for Tom, either. The duo have very rarely been independent as characters (their personalities are the persistent house cat who often serves people and the vindictive house mouse who wrecks havoc and tries to survive under the same roof) without them, as they have been a staple to their personalities and roles as characters since the very first short. The cartoons were never just chasing with no plot or substance. Similar to Curious George or even The Muppets, Tom and Jerry frequently interacted with humans to feel complete as characters. They were important to the characters since. All the familiar T&J tropes were adapted into the 2021 movie, but now in a posh hotel backdrop.

    What is it with people thrashing _2014 renovation_ to legendary characters - and beyond? If you can look past that whole "initial lack of outlines" criticism, 2014's _The Tom & Jerry Show_ does a lot of stuff right. For example, never showing human characters' faces (especially Rick and Ginger's), giving more attention to secondary characters like Butch, Tuffy (aka Nibbles) and Spike, and even bringing sporadic characters like Toots, Toodles Galore, Muscles, Uncle Pecos, Meathead, Lightning, and the like. As well as maintaining the slapstick feel from prior decades. Even _Tom & Jerry in New York_ tries to do the same. Honest-to-God tries to do the same.

    I didn't like the humor in the 2014 series. It’s not for nothing that I included the moment with the farting armpit (although in a sense it’s even funny). The original shorts set the level too high. The concert episode is a good example of this. All the action is created only with the help of music and sounds. So I'm just not ready to accept poop jokes in this franchise. Character outlines. For me, this has always been an important part of Tom and Jerry's design. There is a lot of action in projects about them. And well-drawn contours add volume to the movement. In the 2014 show, the animation is lifeless. And the lack of contours also contributes to this. The characters look like puppets cut out of paper. And they just move along the plane. There is no depth in the frame. That's all. But hey, like I said, this show is highly rated and has its own audience. Everything is fine.

And they probably didn’t understand the buffoonery of these short films. And with such a small budget, I think they did a good job. I really like how everything is drawn. Especially the DICKY MOE episode. It looks like a painting. The soundtrack, aggressiveness and dark atmosphere make Gene Deitch's version stand out from everything else. And I don't feel negative about it.

    Good video, I think Tom and Jerry's main issue over the years is how a lot of it's shows (Including Tales) doesn't really stand out from the original series or each other. Tom and Jerry Singapore is a good step in the right direction but I think we need a show that really experiments with Tom and Jerry in order for them move them forward and stand out.

    Yeah, Tom and Jerry just seem to be living in the Boomerang channel now, being constantly broadcasted like leftover waste. They still air The Tom and Jerry Show from 2016 (or whatever) over there, as well as some of the oldies and the 60’s Chuck Jones version. I personally like the 2021 movie, it’s alright, really. Definitely not as good as the 90’s movie. I think Tales is also pretty good. I am pretty sad about the outcome of poor Tom and Jerry today, and I hope one day they have their big return, but for now they’re just condensed into a big pile of reruns. Very glad they could get something with Singapore, I hadn’t even known about that!

    The problem with tom and jerry is that the formula has been ruined due to modern society deeming cartoons as things made for only kids, when the tom and jerry show came out, the franchise was pretty much stripped of its identity,. tom doesn't even try to eat jerry anymore, which kinda killed the whole cat and mouse premise, i honestly think the series could start gaining some more traction again if they focused more on tom and jerry as characters instead of the environment, in every movie/show revolved around these two its always tom trying to get used to the environment so that he can catch jerry, and then jerry finds a way to use it against him, i feel like instead they could just make tom use his wits to overpower jerry and then the whole chase formula could ensue, but this time jerry strikes back and then other characters get involved within the conflict to make it more entertaining for not just kids but teens and maybe even adults

    I don't like "Tom & Jerry Tales" because I personally don't like how they handle the fantasy environments. Just felt kind of boring and predictable in areas such as the genie episode and the Japan episode. I really don't like "The Tom & Jerry Show" because the plots were usually not as interesting and there was WAY too much talking from the other characters. Feels like they also tried to cash in on nostalgia by doing things such as bring Uncle Peco back. Definitely wasn't as funny. The newer ones just don't feel as creative to me with a lot of gimmicks used and the use of other IP's for the movies like The Wizard of Oz movie and Sherlock Holmes. I like the older versions of the show that had smooth animation and were very creative and even artistic. Loved episodes such as when they fought in a pool table, when Tom flies around in a girdle, the episodes that take place in concerts, the Mouseketeer episodes, the elephant mouse episode, the space episodes with the robot versions of the characters, the fire works episode, and many more. Just felt like they hit a good balance of wild energy and creativity back then. Now it feels like they're trying too hard to have stories out of place for Tom & Jerry such as that one detective episode from "The Tom & Jerry Show". I also prefer the animation from a lot of the shows back then for the darker colors and the back rounds. I think the animation now a days is usually too bright and smooth and not as natural. Also preferred how the violence was handled along with the sound effects and the iconic yells from Tom. Could just be nostalgia but I don't think I'm far off from thinking that Tom flying around in a woman's girdle to catch Jerry and his bird friend is more interesting than watching Tom and Jerry screw around with a genie lamp like every other cartoon character.

    Finally, someone besides me noticed it! I really love golden age cartoons and twentieth century animated television shows specifically because of the color palette. The colors are slightly dark, but at the same time bright and rich. In short, these are real paints applied to celluloid, not a computer palette. But the people I try to explain this to look at me as the highest stage of nerddom. And I agree with you. Even "Tom and Jerry Kids", despite the strange concept, looks better than Tales or Show 2014. But I am supportive of Tales. To some extent because of nostalgia. But there were a lot of good and high-quality episodes. Something could scare, make you laugh, or surprise you with its creativity. Scare in Over the River and Boo the Woods. Make laugh in Eggs Beat Surprise with creativity in Spook House Mouse And pay tribute to the classics in the episode Fraidy cat scat Plus, the animation in this show is good. The animators were still drawing frame by frame. It wasn't as energetic as the classic episodes, but it wasn't bad either. Thanks for sharing your opinion

    This was a pretty good video essay and the editing is on point. I do have some problems of my own though, first of-all the title & thumbnail are somewhat clickbait by insinuating that the new Singapore cartoons are bad when in the video you yourself say that and to paraphrase, “The new Singapore cartoons are great and capture the feeling of the old short films.” And to refute your “inappropriate amount of talking” claim, Tom And Jerry cartoons have always had talking in many forms be it Tom singing a song for his Love or any of the supporting animal characters. And your criticism of that modern “the Tom and Jerry show” for having a style that doesn’t “suit” Tom and Jerry is forgetting that slapstick can and has been in this style before and BY Warner Bros. themselves! Seriously look at Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends it can and has worked before. Your complaint about the film was justified but saying that “them not giving an explanation for cartoon animals in the movie” is honestly a terrible argument, look at Who Framed Roger Rabbit because doing that isn’t always needed and would break the pacing for even more dumb stuff not related to Tom & Jerry. Your point about story was good, but you are forgetting that the plot doesn’t need to be the main focus when writing Tom And Jerry. Take one of their more beloved shorts like “Cat Concerto” the simple “plot” is Tom is playing piano for some reason and Jerry is inside of the piano and they take that all the way for the most hilarious gags! Or a simple “Wile Vs Roadrunner”-esque short where Tom just wants to catch a mouse and reads a book for dummies how to do that. Having a condition for the cat to catch the mouse isn’t that bad and it spices the story up. I like shorts with stories as-well too like the cartoon where Tom thaws Jerry from being frozen. If you read this wall of text thank you, I care a lot about Tom And Jerry and I don’t like it seen as repetitive or boring in anyway. PS. Good video, but you forgot about the anime Japanese Tom And Jerry shorts from 2020 and hope you become a bigger content creator!

    GREAT COMMENTARY. Thanks: 3 Video thumbnail. Hmm.. what cover is not clickbait? But I have an explanation. I chose the first and the recent Tom and Jerry design. And these designs are both very similar and very different. For example, the similarity is in the rounded ears of a cat. Who Framed Roger Rabbit and the 2021 film are incomparable. At Roger they explained to us that toons are actors from another world. Yes, we don't know how they appeared. But this explanation was enough. Plus everything. We got an excellent plot, colorful characters among people and cartoons. And a stunning visual style, drawn frame by frame. The behind-the-scenes scenes from Roger are the best movie extras I've seen. Anime shorts? Is it where the cat and mouse just do kawaii things? This is more of a cute advertisement than a full-fledged franchise project. In my opinion, of course. To be honest, I just forgot about them. Thanks again. I guess I'll leave this greeting already :D

    @@ringapol Yes but the explanation for the toons was very short and is just really up to interpretation as what toon-town is(and it’s hardly a world it’s literally just in the road/and since Jessica rabbit said “I was drawn this way” it makes it much more confusing on how toons are made and such but it doesn’t ruin the whole movie) because it’s basically just some place that exists. And the 2021 Tom And Jerry film has every animal be cartoon-ish, and you can just have the explanation of “that’s what animals look like in this universe). I did say that I agreed WFRR is a much better film. Also to be fair, there’s way more modern and worse versions(that would fit the criteria of the title) for Tom & Jerry that you could’ve drawn from with the context of the video and your subjective opinion. You could’ve used Boomerang’s “the Tom And Jerry show” that you criticized here for the thumbnail. Still that was a small point of mine and the Singapore version of the Cat and Mouse duo is a better juxtaposition to the old toons.

    Sounds like a Gatekeeper essay on how Tom & Jerry should be when it should never be. Creative license gives the cat and mouse rights to crossover with intellectual properties...doesn't matter who or what might be; it just needs better writers. @ringapol Sharing my two cents isn't automatically disrespecting people's two cents. Say what you want about the 2014 show, but at least it was actually close to the nuance of the original cartoons. Even the animation and pacing far felt less lifeless here than it did in Tales. Tales was so off-the-mark in every way that it makes the Chuck Jones shorts look great.

The colors are very washed and cheracters blend in the background way to much. Also the tone of franchise shifted in such a weird way. They had a detective show in whic Tom and Jerry work together to solve some crime or something. Thats the last I remeber from watching Tom and Jerry maybe things changed. The fun of the show is the over the top slap stick. Thats what Tom and Jerry is know for,so why abandon that premice?

    @@jami.j2044 I agree with you on the animation topic. I respect the work of animators who use technology to create projects. Considering how many possibilities modern tools open up. But my soul lies in manual animation. The greatest magic is when you deform drawn objects. You take a few shots, and then use a slide show to create movement. Have you ever watched the Disney movie The Reluctant Dragon? Exactly the full-length version, which showed all the processes of creating a cartoon. Huge cans of paint. Celluloid. Creation of sound effects. I think this is what heaven looked like :D

    @@ringapol Well now I watched the whole 1 hour film I can say that was hour well spent. Lovely stuff from old disney(production of animation,color,sound effects and voice actors pouring their loungs out). The whole feel of the old celluar animation is like smooth,a bit snapy and expresive. Thats what I like the most about it! I just dont like that in modern times the animation is so stiff and lacking in expression. There is no unrealistic wabbeling or stretching of the body. I now I sound like someone that hates new things,but how can I like something that just lacks something that makes the artform that it is with out the fetures that makes it so good in the first place. Not to say that all animation must contain these fetures Im just talking about Tom and Jerry here specificly. Hell one of mine favorite films is a short film by the name of Tifusari. It very minimal in animation and color yet very effective at saying what it wants to say. Surviving the cold and harsh night by willpower and comradery. Animation is supposed to make you break free from the shackels of reality and potrey things in the way that you just cant express in the real life. Thats really all that bothers me. People are just boring in the way they animate now. The more a thing is simplefied there more pointless it feels as concivence and thats what I thinks happen to modern animation. Its just uninspired garbage most of the time and some bangers here and there.

  • @ringapol

    @@jami.j2044 Well and I watched Tifusari. I’ve never even heard of it, although I’ve watched a huge number of animated short films from different countries. And it was just wow. Limited colors can sometimes create an atmosphere better than a full collection of photoshopped colors. And you are absolutely right that a high-quality animated film is the best guide from reality to escapism. In general, any movie is a break from reality, but because of its visual appearance, the cartoon copes with this much better. Anyone can pick up a camera and start filming another person. But not everyone can make animation. Sorry, sometimes it's hard for me to concentrate on one topic, and I spread like honey :D About classic animation. I don't have the most typical example, but.. Old cartoons about Asterix. For example Astérix et le coup du menhir. This is amazing. A real palette of colors, animation and detailed backgrounds that are more reminiscent of a painting. I really miss this style. And when some people say that this is impossible now, I cite the recent Cuphead Show as an example. Yes, it's not the same. But the imitation of golden age cartoons was amazing. And even new technologies came in handy. Previously, there was a house painted in watercolor in the background, and the opening door of this house was painted with the same colors as the character and the difference is sometimes noticeable. And in the series about Cuphead, the door moved in the same “watercolor style.” Everything is possible. There would be desire, talented animators and money
