Спорт

A common question I get asked by those following my #TrainWithJim series is what’s the difference between a dumbbell squat and a dumbbell deadlift?? In this video, I explain.

    If you start running with your right leg first, it's called sprinting. If you start running with your left leg first, it's called spranting. Two completely different exercises, I swear!

    I was told by a PT i hired that if you do dumbbell squats, your meant to rest the dumbbells on ur shoulders, vertically and squat while your hands hold them as you do the motions. That way your immitating the principle of the squat of having the weight being carried on your shoulders and your legs are pushing your upper body plus weight directly upwards, your arms wont get fatigued in the process. Seen a few youtube fitness trainers do this method also.

    No that's more of a deadlift still both are deadlifts if you want to squat with it either have the dumbells upwards on your shoulders while holding it and squatting or holding one dumbell foward like in a front squatand then squatting .both variations you did are more of a deadlift

  • @lifter98
    @lifter985 жыл бұрын

    The movement looks similar to a power squat, except for the leg position being too close. But essentially both movements are dumbbell deadlifts. To do a d. bell d. lift though you have to have your legs in a slightly unnatural position, ie., too close together, in order for the dumbbells to get past your knees.

    I'm not an expert but I've always thought, squats target your thighs and that you therefore lower your ass as much as possible keeping your upper body slightly tilted forward while standing up, wheras dead lifts target your lower back and that you therefore lower your ass as little as possible feeling the power coming from your lower back muscles and then continue to really strech your back until it is slightly arched....

  • @vola4607

    @vola4607

    Not just criticism. Here's the difference, in a squat you start the movement by breaking at the hip and the queue is to drop your ass down. Note: some people keep their torso upright some lean forward a bit, depends on their anatomy. In a deadlift, you also break at the hips but the focus is not to bring the ass down (it might go down still). The focus is to bring the weight to the floor, so there will be more of a forward lean and more stretch in the hamstrings. Also, a Sumo deadlift will still engage the Quads and still engage the hams and glutes. The conventional will engage the spinal erectors more and less Quads. Will still engage the glute-ham. So, no, positve first and negative first doesn't define the movement. Its the most stupid argumentI have ever heard.

    In reality, the real difference is a deadlift means lifting the weight from off the ground from a dead stop position every rep. The dumbbell squat is stopping short of the floor and standing back up.

    I had a knee replaced due to myriad injuries over the years and cannot do a squat to save my life...but can do dumbbell squats since holding the dumbbells allows me to complete the motion - just use strict form and don't go too heavy. Anyway, I can still do barbell deadlifts I have noticed there is very little difference performing squats/deadlifts using dumbbells. In my case, I found that doing dumbbell deadlifts at the beginning of a workout worked-out my back while dumbbell deadlifts (same movement) at the end of a leg workout really focused more attention on my legs. So that's what I usually do. I don't know the scientific reasons for the differences...just know that's what works for me and that others may have similar experiences.

    Jim R. Can you run and jump fine on that replaced knee?

  • @jimr880

    @jimr880

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes and no. Yes...I can run and jump, but no...running and jumping and not activities one should do regularly with a steel and plastic joint because due to wear and tear. I'm in my mid-50s and ran for years even having several knee injuries...and I can, technically, run, but I find that the mechanics of my running looks more bouncy and not very masculine. Instead, I take a 30+ minute walk each day and usually dance (Swing, Club, Ballroom) twice per week so I get plenty of cardio. Moreover, I deadlift and squat, but I cap my deadlifts at 315 (often much less) and my squats with dumbbells under 100 lbs. I'm not wanting to hurt myself (or the artificial joint) and find that I can still get in a really good workout by maintaining strict form along with isometrics (really squeezing the muscles. It is what it is. Moreover, I find that I can run in sand without feeling like I'm pounding on knee joints...too bad I don't live on or near a beach because doing HIIT sprints on the beach would be really good exercise for building explosive strength. Okay, I don't do any explosive jumping so that's kind of an issue because sprinting and jumping used to get me shredded and also help me move past plateaus. Don't get me wrong...I jump around a little bit while dancing and do the 2-inch vertical while shooting basket. I'm only a little over 5'11" but I could dunk a basketball back in High School...and I have no delusions of being able to do that at my age even with two good knees...but my barely touching the bottom of the net is really kind of embarrassing. A year or two before the replacement (but before it became too painful) I could still jump halfway up the net. So jumping is probably something you need to limit should you be considering a Total Knee Replacement (TKR). What really pissing me off is that I'm wanting to learn C-Walk...but the combo of the knee, age and bulking up to 200 lbs. since hitting the gym and taking JYM the past 3-years...well, the legs just don't have enough boune in them. Anyway, you CAN lead an active life with a knee replacement (and the technology is getting better and better) but the most running and jumping you do, the faster your steel & plastic knee is doing wear out, and the more complications you're likely to encounter. That's why I stick to doing controlled low-impact resistance training along with doing low-impact cardio such as walking and dance. To be honest, I only started dancing to keep in shape (I always thought dancing was for sissies) and I cannot tell you just how many gal pals I've had (if you know what I mean) these past 3-years. Cheers!

    @@jimr880 Looking at TKR in both knees eventually. Right now I have no cartilage in either knees but do manage to still putz hobble along on my True800 treadmill at 4.5 mph on my 36mm Nike invincible running shoes. The combination of the Nike shoes and True treadmill has made a huge difference in my ability to keep walking. I can do a tiny hop to sit onto my Ford F-250 tail gate but I don't dare jump off the truck bed. Five years ago I had no problems taking a single jump onto my truck bed. Now I'm 53 and my doctor asked if I could wait for knees replacement as they only last 20 years max. I told him I'll do what I can. My brother in law is a certified physical therapist and trainer and he gave me tips on maintaining my knees. Not always easy but it has been certainly helpful. After every work out my knees hurt for a few days but I feel my muscles are stronger that when I started. He told me since I had no longer have cartilage to build up the muscles around my knee as those are like the cables on a bridge. Also to work the front Tibialis (from shin area) and calf. All this I have been doing and it has been mitigating the pain in money. I'm around 65% of where I was healthy. Not great but not bad either. Trying to hold off till 60 for a knee replacement then rehab starts all over again.

    Your squat is just a deadlift bro, you're missing knee flexion. Squat has your chest up throughout, so if you held your arms out in front of you they'd be parallel to the ground the whole time. In a Dl they end up pointing straight down to the floor. Bro just did a whole video and the comment section is the one teaching him what he's trying to teach

    I hate to disappoint, but the video is only partially correct. When doing squats you make a sitting down and up movement while holding the dumbbells at all times. When you're doing deadlifts, you only very slightly bend your knees while picking up the dumbbells and only slightly bend your knees when you put them back on the floor, again.

One good thing is that the ROM with db's is greater than doing deadlifts with a hexbar. The heaviest db's I got are a pair of 80s and 100s and i use some rubber inner tubes to strap on a 5lb plate on each end to make the 100s into 110s. it's enough for me but laughable for others.

    One bit of confusion I still have with this is if you are doing the dead-lift you still need to pull the dumbbell off of the rack go to your spot and then lower the weight to the floor essentially squatting the weight to the floor so in reality the starting position is the same. So I guess technically the difference would be more about the pause and slight release of the dumbbells on the floor before exploding upwards? So what about Romanian dumbbell dead-lifts? Don't these start from the upright position and then you just lower to slightly below the knee? Using a barbell I pretty much understand the difference between these it is just when you start using dumbbells I get confused. Thanks for all your knowledge Jim, I really enjoy following all your advice, watching your videos and taking your Supps.

    🖐🏼This video is demonstrating a back exercise, not leg exercise. Squats are all about the legs and glutes👈🏼 Never bend the back, even if it’s with a kettle bell. Tension should always target muscles on lower body below the waste👍🏼

    This guy has no clue, he should limit himself to nutrition advice, what he calls a dumbbell squat is a Romanian deadlift. A dumbbell squat opposite to a dumbbell deadlift should be performed with more leg drive, meaning the tighs and hamstring should move downwards.

    lol thats not a dumb bell squat. pretty crazy considering who you are. The weight should never rest on the ground on a squat. Whats wrong with you?

    First day impressions:It arrived in a waist high box. kzread.infoUgkxP26Tir6n60vUkdtn4mbwhRO8cwuJQNy2 Each dumbbell was in its own foam box within the shipping box. Everything was secure and in good shape. No weird smells. The weight changing mechanism is really smooth and straight forward. Changing weight is really fast and easy. Though the handle is plastic, I don't think it will be breaking anytime soon. So far pretty impressed after my first session with them. I was afraid they were going to be too wide at first, but I didn't have any issues with them while doing upright rows.

    Bad advice. The difference of a squat and a deadlift is the center of gravity of the weights related to your feet, and consequently a difference in form and what muscles are used. This video displays something in between a deadlift and a squat, which is also ok, but confusing/wrong as a learning instruction.

    Squat world records, heavier than deadlift world records? Poor form demonstrated here on DB squat. Torso should be more vertical rather than hinging forward.

    Those would be front squats. Holding at your sides is more similar to a back squat, but even more similar to a hex bar squat.

  • @jessicavotran

    Your squat is all wrong. Back needs to be almost vertical and knees bent at sitting on floor position. You are showing perfect dumbbells deadlift though. Just don’t call any of it a squat
