Dr Joe. This is the best video ever for diabetic diet. I wish I came across it two years ago when I was diagnosed with diabetes with HbA1c of 49 mmol/mol, weight of 85Kg. The nurse advised me to stop using seasonings and reduce on salt intake. I tried intermittent fasting but it didn’t work as I work shifts. so I decided to eat like people from my village back home whose diet is plant based though not by choice and my HbA1c dropped to 41, weight dropped from 85Kg to 78Kg, target was 80kg. I went swimming twice a week and walked a lot. The nurse was amazed. My village diet is mainly loads of beans, lentils, leafy greens, millet, sorghum, sweet potatoes, yam, and cassava, maize meal and steamed green bananas and chicken or beef on rare occasions. I minimises on maizemeal and cassava due to its starchy content. I also ate plenty of fruits and vegetables. I was able to reverse the diabetes and avoided ever going on any medication. As I write this I am at 39HbA1c and weighing 74KG. My blood pressure is at 135/70. I am also doing the exercises from one of your videos for high blood pressure and it is working wonders. A million thanks for your good works. You will never know how many lives you have saved from your selfless and very informative videos. A million thanks from the bottom of my heart. Blessings

Cus I tried it I would go without food for 6 hrs from 6 am untill mid afternoon bt my blood sugar drops to 3.5 0r 4.5 Is it possible to fast when diabetic ? And is it safe to wait for my blood sugar to drop low around 3.5 so I can eat something sweet like ice cream 🍦 or just cheat a bit wt sugary treats😮. I do take mertformin 1000mg daily when I'm fasting I take it in the evening after meals when not fasting I take it in the morning around 9 am then I eat. It depends on how long the IF lasts for. If it's a 24-hour fast, then doing it daily might be a bit of a stretch for a lot of people. But a 16:8 IF is fine for everyday fasting at least for a couple of months and when you have achieved your goal, you can limit it to 4 - 5 days a week

HI Dr Joe, thank you for sharing the different pathways. You said things that I have not heard before and make sense. I was diagnosed pre-diabetic Sept 2019, and immediately went on low carb (similar to keto). My AIC dropped to normal in 3 months and I lost 25 lb. My glucose will spike if I eat any rice, noodles or bread at all. I am in my 70's and very underweight. I desperately need to gain weight. What diet do you recommend for me to gain weight while controlling blood glucose? I discovered your channel yesterday and am starting the soleus pushup exercise. Seems to work! Thank you so much for your help.

Tricky one when you are trying to gain weight and control diabetes at the same time. A contradiction in terms. There's a possibility your diabetes is Type 1.5 in which case a small dose of insulin will be required to control your sugar levels and facilitate your weight gain. Type 1.5 is midway between Type 1 and Type 2. These individuals are usually underweight and yet do not have their diabetes under control. Introducing a small dose of insulin does help. Now, if you are not Type 1.5, then one way to gain weight will be for you to eat whole starchy foods, yes starchy foods like potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice, corn, quinoa etc (whole foods not processed starchy foods). But in doing so, you have to cut out all oil - vegetable oil and seed oils have to be weeded out of your lifestyle altogether

@@sykusch Yes, if you want to reverse insulin resistance (and I mean make yourself more insulin sensitive), all oils have to go. Get your fats naturally. Olive oil by eating olives, flaxseed oil by eating flaxseeds, sunflower oil by eating sunflower seeds etc within reason. This is the not-so-secret little dietary manoeuvre that a lot of diabetics find it difficult to embrace. Instead they would rather go keto and make themselves more insulin resistant. They are just happy with the HbA1c that keto diet delivers when in actual fact they are making themselves more sick. Takes time to get used to, but you can cook without oils

I have also noticed when I eat white rice, I could urinate like 9/10 times a night! It has affected by life and quality of sleep, like crazy! I have cut out white rice and also cut down on some food... but I still wake up at least 4 times to urinate . My test with the NHS has shown that my sugar levels are okay and I am not prediabetic. I have also purchased blood sugar monitoring system and I have been pricking myself to monitor. I have not noticed any abnormalities and results are within acceptable range. I am adopting the practise of stop eating or drinking after 6pm. Just started this 2 days ago and I still have frequent urination . What do you advice please? You probably have overactive bladder (OAB). You may need Urodynamics test to confirm that or sometimes we may just offer a prescription that quietens the bladder down without doing the test. It's a bit unlikely your prostate gland is enlarged at the age of 42 but your doctor could look into that seeing as you are black. A simple back passage (rectal) examination will to a large extent exclude that. The other possibility is you are probably consuming what I call bladder irritants. That's a very common cause. I shall do a video on that sometime soon.

I was thinking it might be enlarged prostate myself. However, I recently did the usual health screening/above 40yrs old screening . Following test were carried out -
(Renal Profile, Differential white cell count, ,FBC, U+E+UREA, LFT, Serum Gamma GT level, Serum lipids, Se Prostrate specific Ag level, Thyroid function test, Bone Profile, Serum Vitamin B12, Iron, Serum Ferritin, HbA1c gel- IFCC standardised ) all were okay except the Total white cell count, which was slightly below minimal. I have been working on this, as I suspect this has declined due to my constant sleep interruption. Score is 3.73 when normal range is 4-11.

I love your videos and have a question, Dr. Joe. Beans, lentils, and legumes are recommended for better blood sugar control but they don’t seem to work well for us as the blood sugar levels increase significantly especially when they are cooked down nicely (and we can’t eat them any other way anyway). Even something as simple as cooked edamame tends to do that. Have you seen that in some of your patients?

The main reason for that is you are still very insulin resistant. And may be the way you are cooking the beans too and I'm referring to the ingredients used. Hi Dr Joe. I just became a new sub after watching this video today. I did also watch part of your video on the 11 fruits diabetics or prediabetics should not eat (I am going back to finish watching the rest of that video shortly). Nonetheless, this video caught my attention, and I had to watch all of this one first. I was diagnosed with prediabetes recently, and I wanted to find out the best way to reverse it without being more confused than I was before watching this video. There is just so much conflicting information on KZread, and sadly even from local physicians on how to properly reverse prediabetes. I started a plan last week similar to your phase #2 approach; however, I was still adding a ripe banana in the rolled oats I cooked everyday to give it a sweeter taste. However, after watching your video I now know that ripe bananas are a no no for prediabetes. I also learned from you that there are several other fruits that I need to stay away from, due to there glycemic index. So, thank you very much for the great tips! I will definitely follow your phase #2 approach in it's entirety.

You are sure you really want to gain weight? If you are, then eat lots more starchy carbs like white potatoes, sweet potatoes, and the grains. You need to eat more at a time. Bigger portions. But I worry your blood sugar control might spin out of control with that. Think carefully if you really want to gain weight or just maintain your current weight

I've been reduceing the animal foods and moving into Vegan Keto. My numbers are improving as I adjust. I'm eating 2 meals a day low carb, low fat 90% plant based. I feel so much better and I don't have glucos drops during my fasts.

Hello Dr. Joe, Your videos are great, very helpful. I fit into the pre-diabetic category. I spoke with a nutritionist and was given a low glycemic eating plan that allows for 1 serving of non-vegetable carbs per day. I would like to know your thoughts about this type of meal plan. I have had great results in the past using the Atkins diet but found it too restrictive and unsustainable. I did find during my time using the Atkins diet that I had more energy and felt a lot less sluggish due to the reduction in starchy carbs. Thanks for producing great content.

No, it isn't. It has sugar in it. It has saturated fat in it. Both of which aren't good for managing your diabetes

It depends on how much rice you eat on each occasion. I would limit the amount of rice and have more of the vegetables
