I've visited Italy many times and had mixed experiences. In some places it was great and in other places not so much. From my experience, some Italians treat Black people poorly until they find out you are not African - then and only then do they give you a little bit of respect. That said, my experiences in Italy were mostly positive.

Definitely too short, Xavier! How many times you have to experience it to know by now? [wink] 60 minutes, 75 minutes, 90 minutes, let it run as long as people are happy to share/talk. If necessary, split it into Part 1 and Part 2, but continue and bring out more of the richness of people's experiences, knowledge, and insights.

I love and look forward to these interviews. Keep up the good works Xavier.

The Ethiopians and East Africans in the Horn of Africa differ in appearance to West Africans. The Italians fought two wars in 🇪🇹.Ethiopia. In 1885-6, The siblings needed more time to expand on Italians' interest in Ethiopia. When the Europeans scrambled to carve up Africa, 🇮🇹 Italy invaded Ethiopia and was defeated in1896. Italy again invaded in 1935, held Ethiopia and had to relinquish it in 1947. Emperor Haile Selassie, a person well-known to Jamaicans, pardoned the Italian settlers in Ethiopia. There is an interesting history there and the Africans trying to enter Europe illegally through Italy and Greece further complicates the matter.

It was Great to see this interview! I recognise Emanuel from the late 1980’s when I used to take his African dance classes in Turin where I lived briefly while on a work exchange programme. He and his wife were very hospitable to me and made me feel at home in Turin. It’s lovely to see him again - “Black nuh Crack!” Janet (London, UK)

Xavier, I am all over your message board today. Rasta Pasta is a fixture on 🇯🇲 Jamaican menus here on Long Island, New York. Italy is history lovers' dream. Visited Rome, Vatican City, Assisi, Florence and Colosseum; sat in the Amphitheater in Caesarea Phillipi in Israel, built by Romans, so understand the marvel of Italian architecture and acoustics described by Emmanuel. The Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera. is on my bucket list to visit.

I agree that Italians can be racist. I experienced it with my daughter on a visit there. We saw how they treated an African young man too. We said good morning in Rome and no answer while he stared us down. Our hotel placed us in a community apartment even though we booked months end. They were also very rude. I could go on but why? I must say one pleasant experience happened when we tried to get a taxi and no one would stop. An Itallian man stepped out of the crowd and stopped a taxi for us. We were so grateful. There are good people everywhere but I am not looking forward to visiting again. There were too many incidents of racism and it made me appreciate how nice Jamaicans are to our visitors. No wonder they keep coming back. Big up Jamaica!!

Nice! They’re from my neck of the woods. My mom is from Runaway Bay and I went to St. Ann’s Bay Primary and then York Castle High in Brown’s Town. It’s really a small world after all. I visited Rome a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. Great place if you’re a fan of good food, coffee, wine, architecture, and history. Wishing them continued success.

Such a great interview filled with information!! Before Italian unification in 1871, the peninsula consisted of a collection of Italian speaking self-governing city states, some richer and more powerful than others. Even in 🇺🇸 America, ItalianAmericans will first identify with a region and say " I'm Sicilian, Neopolitan, Calabrian etc." The political country of 🇮🇹 Italy, that we know now, is only 150 years old, younger than the United States. The southern states had a history of mixture with other Mediterranean people, while the northern states influenced by the Germanic peoples. This accounts for the difference in appearance. Unfortunately, the bad behaviour of the loud, obnoxious and exhibitionist few taint the opinion others hold of the whole group. Our quarrel should be with the bad actors. To protect oneself, there is distrust of everyone in the group. Hence Jamaicans' reluctance/mistrust to connect with their own people abroad..

My son lives in Italy for 4 years ,and we hardly seem any jamaicans, but I promise myself to try and move back there to live permanently,

I enjoy watching these series of videos of Jamaicans living in various nations in the world, outside the countries where there is traditionally a big Jamaican population i.e. USA, Canada and Britain. Then, it literally just occurred to me that I can include myself in this group of people. Though not Jamaican born myself, both my parents were born and raised in Clarendon, Jamaica. I was born in the UK, but emigrated to live in the Netherlands, where I am now happily living. 18:19 I get the same when I need to travel outside the UK and the Netherlands. Peoples' eyes light up when I tell them I am of Jamaican heritage.

No I don't agree some of us never get any exposure and because of that we are not brave enough to venture out for ourselves when we get older, we are still shy, not outspoken etc,I'm talking from personal experience......

Italy is amazing. Definitely worth visiting Cortina for skiing and Dolomiti in northern Italy for exploring. Incredible. It’s also pretty simple to learn the basics of Italian as 20% of our English language is Latin based making many words in Italian closely associated to those in English.

This was great. Please bring them back. I love Jamaica! I go there often. Always wanted to go to Italy finally went to Rome for a day by way of London. I want to stay somewhere in Italy for a month or 2.

I know mico Blanco he uses to come and dance on the cruise ship in Ocho

Really really loved this interview. I visited Verona, Venice, Florence, Rome, and The Vatican. I didn’t experience any racism outside of this guy staring down me and my wife but my African friend said racism there is really bad.

I really love your channel. It’s the best exposure to different cultures and places from a Jamaican point of view.

Scheol dont mistake caste-ism as racism. As per my boyfriend who is Italian: The issue with Italy between Italians is a matter of regionism not race because they are all Italians. I am a Canadian-Jamaican and I love visiting Italy (6 times) and have always found the people warm and welcoming.

Pardon me if I used the incorrect word s, phrases or terminology … but I was just repeating what they told me about their lives amongst their own…they say racism…not regionism… And I did say they’re one of the most warmest, friendly and beautiful people in Europe. I love the Italians, but everyone’s experience is different I guess! Anyway very happy to touch base and chat… nuff respect and blessings! One love ❤️ 🇯🇲

Scheol was correct. I lived there during my service for a few years, learned the language and married my wife from Sicily. There is a caste system, the same way there is a caste system in India. Don’t mistake racism as exclusive to black and white or simply outside of ones race. We can harbour the same disdainful feelings and attitude towards people of different origins or genetic make up even if they both are of the same phenotype. Southern Italians have an integrated culture with the Iberian peninsula to include before the Italo-Ethiopian war. The Moors conquered and the south (mixing occurred) northerners still call the southerners ‘Terrone’ which is a racist akin to Kaffir in India and the n-word in America. Lest not forget, the regions did play a role as the country constituted of aristocratic domains - which elitism and classism would be the foundation and adding a mixing/dilution of their European ethnicity brings about a racist trope. If you can say they are all italian (which is great) then you have to extend that to Americans (I.e. African-American, Asian American, Latin American) which is obviously not the case.

P.s. The caste system is not very much prevalent as in India and is trumped more by classism (inveterate Household names) which plays a much bigger role.

My question is what’s up with the Jamaican style food infused with Italian cuisine (Maddd)

I find Italian here in the USA they are very nice I did not came across one that I did not like ,l was in Italy the cruise ship dock and we went over the county,

I've visited Italy in the past, the architecture is awesome, some of the men were too overly friendly and touchy feely...I did enjoy the food. Venice was nice, Pisa and so was Florence. I'm glad that Emanuel was there because he was more authentic. She loved everything about Italy until her brother start telling the truth.... Some of the Southern Italians are mix with the Moors and they are looked down on by the Northerns because of their darker complexion......I guess she have never seen your channel if she thinks Jamaicans are not all over the world. I wish the brother had more time on the show.

Woulda listen to them whole day.

Great interview as usual Xavier, I always enjoy watching and listening to other Jamaican experiences all over the world. I visited Rome just before the pandemic and it was a great experience. My daughter and I took a full day tour to Pompeii and stopped in Sorrento for pizza. We covered a whole lot in Rome including a walking food tour. I am not a lover of pasta and that was the only drawback to enjoying the food. I had oxtail that was cooked in tomato sauce but there was no rice to go with it. I ended up eating it with cooked spinach and bread! It was quite good! The history is rich and it doesn't take much imagination to go back hundreds of years to the Roman Empire. There is so much to see in Rome and it's all walkable. I don't recommend going in the summer because it is extremely hot. The Catacombs is a must see although it's creepy. I definitely plan to return soon. I also suggest taking some tours because you will learn more about places you go to.

Emanuel Miller is telling the truth with racism in Italy. I live in Rome for 6 years ; once I say I am Jamaican =red carpet. When I wear my stylist clothes they think I am from Paris and speak French to me , or when they hear me speak English all Red carpet . However , they are super racist at heart-
