What's Inside a Keyless Drill Chuck | How To Take Apart and Re-Assemble | Remove From CNC Taper Tool

Ғылым және технология

I take apart a jammed keyless chuck to fix it and find out what's inside. The brand is AccuPro, but the chuck is is a generic keyless chuck design, the same model/design is sold by many brands, most of which are made in China or Taiwan. The chuck was totally jammed and the body would not rotate to tighten or loosen.
I thought it was stuck due to corrosion, but when I was finally able to remove the CAT 40 taper tool holder shank, the chuck body freed up and rotated easily. The clearance between the chuck internal and external body is very tight. The jaw tips were a little bit smashed as if it had been dropped on the end. I suspect that it was indeed dropped on the tip, causing the heavy CAT40 tool holder to shove the taper hard into the drill chuck, expanding the internals just enough to jam against the external housing and preventing it from rotating.
The front cover screws off the body. Then the jaws can be removed. The jaw guide also unscrews, revealing the internal screw that moves the jaws. This screw has a reverse thread and when removed reveals through-hole access to the taper.

I only had to take apart half of it, but it was helpful to know what thread direction the parts were. Thanks for putting this video out.

Your welcome. I could not find any videos or instructions on how to take these apart or how they were made. I was a bit stuck at the last part to take out the taper and remove the rear housing.

Helpful video, thanks. When I am not sure about jaw placement I try to color code the jaws to there location when removed. Assumes I am the 1st one from the factory, that is.

1:08 ...Although it doesn't matter which jaws go where, my chuck had some alignment runout and I found that alternating the 3 jaws help eliminate some of the wobble.

Quite disappointing metal savings on slotted cone wall thickness. Jaws simply cannot be stable when clamped.

Worth disassembling a new chuck to clean out all the factory grime and rebuild with fresh grease?

Only if you enjoy doing that. I took this one apart because it was jammed after a lot of use (and probably being dropped)

You do NOT have to dissassemble the chuck part to remove it..! 🤣

How do you remove it in this situation where it was super jammed up (someone may have dropped it and shoved the taper in so tight it stopped the chuck from rotating)?
