What’s For Sale Ep.3 Single Drive's Cabover

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

#whatsforsale #snowmanspeedshop #projectsnowman
On this episode my buddy Dallas (Single_Drive on KZread) is considering selling his awesome 1986 Kenworth K100E cabover with an N14 Cummins, 18 speed, Neway air ride, wet kit w/return, 244” WB, 3:91 rears and a bunch of custom goodies like drop visor and straight pipes with flappers. Dallas was using this truck to haul all kinds of things as it was a working rig, not a show princess. It’s got a current CVIP for use in Alberta and is ready to go to work. This rig is a mean sounding, very fast, low and long beauty that anyone out there would be lucky and proud to own. He’s asking $40,000 CAD for is but is open to offers. If you’re interested, please email me at twinstickgarage@gmail.com and I’ll get you in touch with him
Thanks for watching and as always, I appreciate all the comments, suggestions, and support!

Funny you asked aloud whether you should get a truck and haul gravel for a retirement gig. I talk about my retirement gigs all the time and people look at me like I'm crazy. Just bought a Ford Transit 250 that I'll use to haul freight here shortly. I'm "retiring" in December and plan to work part-time with it. Always looking for older (cheaper) dump trucks that I could use to haul rock/aggregate. Thinking a lot about getting a cabover and leasing on with a dump trailer. We have some companies locally that would use me part-time I think.

If you don't mind hearing from an old retired trucker, just pay no attention to your gear shifting. Listen to your engine roar, she talks to you, straight stick or cable, she'll tell you the time for shifting. Cheers! -Looking forward to your shows every week

Cabovers are great for delivering aggregate to ready mix plants. Those plants tend to be small and cramped and that turning radius really helps.

I used to see this truck parked at the curry yard in valleyview all the time. It looks sharp but I bet it rides like a tank. I suspect it had issues that made them want to get rid of it. I saw it for sale on marketplace for 40k which is a hilarious amount of money for a truck from the eighties

Hey Mark. That N14 sounds great. I had a 79 KW K-100 back in 81 hauling tankers of vegetable oil to Montreal. It had the NHC 400, RTO-12513, round headlights and wiggly KW logo. I loved running that thing. No-draft side windows! If memory serves, I think it had the full length shifter from the floor, not the short shifter. So there was a well-worn spot on the side of the doghouse where the shift head ended up. It had the old style shift head which resembled a chromed hockey puck. I'd have a crack at that!

$40,000 Canadian is about $29,200 U.S. as of 0857 EDT June 6, 2024. That's a nice K-100E, well, it was until Mark tried shifting it. Ouch! And I'm not even a CDL! COE's were a necessity in the era of overall truck length limits. Most of the east coast of the U.S. had a 55 foot bumper to back of trailer limit, so that did not leave a lot of room with a 40 foot trailer. Short wheelbase COE's did have a tight turning radius, making them good for getting trailers into and out of tight spaces. Like I said, I'm not a CDL, but I had a cousin and great uncle and friends who were back in the day.

Mornin Mark, That is a nice old cab over, I have seen that truck a few times on highway #43 and yes it is a good lookin piece of history. Don't feel bad about your shifting, first of every driver no matter what they tell you every driver has always at one time or another ground gears and some more so than others, I told a guy once if you have to lie about never grinding gears, you don't want to drive truck bad enough. I'm sure Dallas will get the money he is asking for that truck there is getting to be more guys looking for cabovers every day. Have a great week my friend say hello to Mrs. Twin stix for us.

In Australia the new thing is a super dog. It's a 5 axle dog trailer. 2 at the front, 3 in the back. But in some places they actually run a 2 axle trailer behind a prime mover and then the 5 axle dog. So it's a mini road train. They're only allowed on certain roads around Sydney and Brisbane. Since pocket road trains (or A doubles, as they're supposed to be called) are becoming more a thing in the big cities which are a 30m standard road train the days of the 4 axle dog are limited I think.

I never met a COE that didn't have "rubbery-feeling" shifter ..... never cared for them. I'd even take the old GMC Brigadier with a 'fuel-squeezer' 6V92 over the "cabinover" sittin' in the yard. It does help, however, to have a set of ROUND tires on the truck .... LOL.

Even with bags, driving an old cabover sucks. One place I worked had a pair of 87s and they were dangerous on narrow, rough roads. The front end would bounce all over the road and you had no hope of keeping it straight. Passing an oncoming truck you had to slow to 70 pray. I hated cabovers for a long time after that. My last job was in a K200 with parabolic front and air cab and it was actually smoother than the conventionals. Drove great.

It's a cabover. Drive it like you are sitting on the center line. I gotta say, that was a little brutal watching you tryin to drive that poor thing. I don't think I've ever seen anyone literally throw a shifter so hard that it raised them up off of the seat LOL... It really wouldn't take a lot to make that a sharp old truck. Heck, it looks like most of the original interior is still good. I like the old "Splendor" style interior, but it would be cool to order a complete new interior from the Day Cab Company. Maybe even do a V.I.T interior.

Cabovers are cool until they put those ridiculous visors on them. Stock visors always look best on cabovers. Its a different story with conventionals because the cab is smaller.
