What Really Happened To Tony Ferguson?
Once a formidable force in the UFC lightweight division, Tony Ferguson, known as El Cucuy, rose from a tumultuous upbringing to become a terrifying presence in the octagon. He soared through the ranks with unmatched intensity and dedication, captivating fans with his unorthodox style and relentless pursuit of victory. Despite setbacks, including multiple failed attempts to face Khabib Nurmagomedov, Ferguson's resilience seemed unbreakable. However, a series of unfortunate events, including a freak injury and struggles with mental health, marked the beginning of his downfall. Despite his valiant efforts, Ferguson's losing streak and declining performance signalled a tragic end to his once-dominant career. Yet, amidst the turmoil, his legacy as a fearless competitor and fan favourite endures, reminding us of the highs and lows that come with pursuing greatness in the unforgiving world of mixed martial arts.

Met Tony at a UFC event I was working. He actually came up and spoke with me. He was extremely pleasant and friendly. He actually said hi I’m Tony about 5 minutes into conversation. I laughed and said I know who you are. He’s naturally talkative and I felt a really nice guy. Geez we all have our issues and problems don’t we? I wish him the very best in the future. I found him to be a real good guy. We ended up talking awhile that day. I really liked the guy. Tough and talks straight up. Hope to run into him again.

Poor tony. We love him, we want the best for him -- he can still fight at that level, but he needs a break to let his body recover. Goggins walking through pain on a tredmill is not the same as getting knee'd in the face. idgaf if he's a Navy Seal, that doesn't stop brain damage and Tony has taken more damage than Goggins ever has.

He was always a wreck waiting to happen though, no boxing skills ,hands down chin up, Weird overtraining regime, anybody who knows fighting was just sitting back waiting to see what eventually happened to him, although he was an unusually tough durable guy it was inevitable that he would suffer from his style of taking damage.

Tony Ferguson is a testament of his era. He was a jiujitsu guy that could rely purely on his innate speed, cardio, pressure, and pace to physically break his opponents. When Gaethje came along, he exposed Tonys weaknesses on the feet: that being Tony gets hit alot. He could get away with it in the past because none of his previous opponents had hands like Justin, but he had never been up against a guy that could keep up with his pace, with viscious leg kicks, and that could crack as hard as Justin could. It also didn't help that Tony cut weight twice before he fought Gaethje. The reason he's fallen off so badly now is primarily because of career mismanagement. He puts himself through so much strenuous work and needlessly taxes his body in ways that won't help him be a better fighter (see the David Goggins camp), he basically never spars anymore, he's constantly switching camps, he never let his knee recover properly when he tore his ACL. And on top of all of that, the game passed him by. The El cucuy era was a unique moment in time. One that will never come back.

  • @cb-tz8og

What happened to him? Gaethje happened to him. Weren’t you watching? Fighters with the age and experience that Ferguson had going into that fight cannot catch that many significant blows, and bounce back like it never happened. He wasnt in peak shape going is,g after the double weight cut. That could have possibly magnified the damage taken. Aside from him losing some of his chin tolerance, he had just gotten beat. Badly. Once a fighter gets figured out, it’s usually down hill from there. Future opponents will all know his vulnerabilities. They have seen the strategy used that has been proven to work.

At this point, with how shot his knees are and how clearly deranged that Tony is, the ethical thing for the UFC to do would be to cut Tony and then offer him a job as a media ambassador or something. Unfortunately the UFC isn't known for giving a shit about its fighters. They'll let Tony go on a 12 fight losing skid before they cut him.

Not going to lie, i wish you would have actually explained the *specific* reasons behind Tonys decline, rather than just summarizing the history of his career. Because nobody seems to understand why he fell off so quickly after Justin Gathje. For those of you interested, allow me to save 13 minutes of your life since this AI narrated clickbait doesnt explain sh!t: The reasons why Tony fell off faster than BJ Penn is a biproduct of his declining mental health and poor career mismanagement. Tony has been engaging in loads of self sabotaging behavior since hes been stripped of the interim belt. He tore his ACL tripping on a cable and came back way too quickly before he was fully recovered. He cut weight twice in a row because...reasons. both these issues compounded together massively handicapped him against Gaethje, as his speed and power was diminished. Plus he did not have a sound game plan going into that fight. Tony spent 6 months getting ready to fight a grappler in Khabib, so instead of putting his grappling to use, he decides to stand and trade punches with him? During the fight, Gaethje exposed a huge hole in Tonys game: that Tony get hit a LOT. He doesnt have good striking defense, and against a heavy handed Gaethje, he took a mountain of unnecessary punishment. Many believe this to be what marked the beginning of the end for Tony, but i disagree. In his next 3 fights, Tony looked like Tony, but he let Olivera and Dariush crank submissions on his limbs and refused to tap because again...reasons. He got flatlin KOd by Chandler. And since then he has looked slower and less athletic over time and his fight IQ has diminished significantly. It also doesnt help that he doesnt listen to his peers, hes constantly changing camps, his skillset is out of date, he basically doesnt spar anymore...like at all. He spent the whole camp against Paddy training for a marathon rather than training for a fight. And so his fight IQ has deteriorated as well as a result. On top of all of that, because the losses keep piling, he has grown increasingly jaded, bitter, and stubborn. Unwilling to take feedback from anyone, unwilling to listen, unable to adapt, and as long as the UFC doesnt cut him, hes just going to keep fighting because its all he knows. It also doesnt help that hes getting older, but thats not the main reason that hes declined. Its all the other stuff mentioned thus far.
