Gonna be a senior at NYU in the fall, and I can definitely say that from experience financial aid is something you have to actively work for. Having really good grades and extracurriculars in highschool was what helped me SO much when it came to paying for school. Mind you, my parents make less then $20,000 a year. Work study is really helpful, but my biggest suggestion is to appeal your financial aid if you are a returning student. You'd be surprised how much you can get.

For me personally my family doesn't make much money, but their not incredibly poor either. From what I've read the financial aid I'd be eligible for is still under the average amount of tuition with financial aid so that's always a plus. Is it hard getting financial aid for the school? That's my main concern at the moment.

I am really happy that you were financially supported and are able to attend NYU! I was just speaking from a macro level that overall 90% of students at NYU are above the average American income. Of course there are some like yourself who have been given financial support, but the vast majority of students here come from economically privileged backgrounds which goes against the supposed diversity we so pride ourselves on. Just wish more people realized this about NYU. Best of luck in the fall!

Trust me when I say I heard the exact same thing. I wanted to go to NYU all my life but then I read some negative things on it. What I learned is that any and every single school in the world has some negatives about it, but often time it is different for everyone. One could hate it, while others will love it. It’s just how it is. So I went ahead and applied anyway and I’m so glad I did because it was the best decision of my life. I got in and went to see for myself that NYU truly is an amazing school.

Great job! Very honest and candid assessment of the school. I both went to grad school and worked in "the bureaucracy" there. NYU is not easy. As you mentioned, there are tremendous opportunities available in New York City when you're a student there. I'm glad you're studying journalism! After stumbling upon this video, it was very interesting to see your different details about NYU. However, my personal favorite was the discussion about financials. I was admitted to NYU ED for the upcoming fall semester. Elated, I was, until I received my financial aid package. Coming from a low-income, working class family, the funds "provided" to me were completely insufficient for me to attend school. The package did not even come close to my FAFSA determined contribution (which might I add was already extremely high). Due to the poor financial aid package given by the NYU financial aid office, I will not be able to attend what was once my dream school. It is sad that you either have to be "very poor or very rich" to attend this school with no financial burdens. Maybe I might try again for grad school, it would be more worth my time and money anyways.

I just graduated from NYU in 2017 and was deciding between NYU and William and Mary!!! I was so distraught and dramatically cried for a week about it prior to seemingly randomly choosing NYU. I had the most amazing experience at NYU and do not regret anything at all, but I also had a sort of fomo from not going to W&M; I just had this feeling that I would have had an equally amazing experience there and would have really clicked with the student body and felt at home. So this is completely fascinating to me to see that you transferred from William and Mary to NYU! I hop e you're loving NYU

I'll be a senior in Stern this fall, and something I definitely didn't know about before coming here was how different and distinct the culture of each school within NYU would be. Like I’m wondering what resources you have access to in that regard when you’re boarding there? And also, what types of jobs do students usually get because I’ve heard a lot of them say they don’t have time for other activities outside of their internships (maybe that’s their income?) or school?

Yes some people have parents that make good money and can afford to pay the high costs of an NYU education but a majority of students take out loans and work just like any other college. NYU is very inclusive and diversified in terms of race, class and economic background. I hope no one was deterred from attending because of what was said in this video. Student loans student loans student loans!

I am glad you have been able to attend NYU despite its costs and I by no means wish to deter anyone from attending based on the financial means. However, it has been well documented that the majority of NYU students are more wealthy than the average american. I am speaking from a macro level that overall most students do not come from lower economic levels, which I was surprised to learn after attending and why I included it in this video. The economy is always up and down and will continue to be. You cannot make what will be a life changing experience based on fear. With the steadily rising costs of food and housing alone, education is no exception. You NEED a degree just to survive. In Ny for example, employers actually have the gall to ask their dog walkers to have a bachelors degree, which is completely INSANE!! That is the world we live in. Most families cannot survive without government assistance without an education. So rather than be uneducated and poor, be educated and learn how to manage your debt. It’s foolish to make an important decision like going to college based on what may or may not happen in the economy. Education will NEVER go out of style.

ManeGirl Kelly That's why public colleges exist, the student debt crisis happened because of thinking like this. I just graduated and I'll be able to pay off all my loans by the end of the year. My decision to attend an affordable college in NYC wasn't based on fear, but on forethought and reasonable expectation about what the post college work environment is like (hint hint, its bad). Encouraging naive 18 year olds to take out huge loans is irresponsible as hell.

  • @Yaowza1227

I think context matters here as well although generally I would agree with your statement. If you're someone applying for say, the NYU accelerated Nursing program you'll be guaranteed a well paying job post graduation so it's worth the cost. Also, considering there are loan repayment options for people working in healthcare that are gov subsidized. However, if you major in something that doesn't guarantee a job and attending this college leaves you in huge debt I agree with you. Quite sad that over 44 million Americans collectively hold nearly $1.5 trillion in student debt, but it's reflective of a broken for profit system that has also commodified war, healthcare, prisons, etc.

great question! so for such a big university to function there are a lot of offices, online sites, and policies that keep everything running. So for example, I am trying to get out of the first year fall meal plan requirement bc I am junior but i transferred so they are trying to force me to buy this meal plan. I am having to jump through a lot of hoops to get out of this policy. I have never actually met someone in person, but have had a couple phone calls and will have to get some paperwork done. essentially, there are just a lot of structures set in place to keep things running and each person has their own task i.e. professors only teach and office administration only knows what their office covers. i wouldn't not come here just for this, but it is a more negative aspect of the school bc it can be annoying/frustrating at times. Hope that helps!

i'm about to start my freshman year here and i'm kind of freaking out but i'm mostly excited as hell! i also wanted to leave a comment here for anyone who wants to go to nyu but is worried they can't due to finances. my family is not necessarily wealthy (we don't live in poverty but without financial aid there's no way i could've gone to any school other than a community college.) nyu (cas) gave me a really awesome scholarship because of my academics throughout high school, as well as a work-study opportunity. the rest of the cost is being covered by federal loans, so we're not immediately paying for anything other than books (as far as i'm aware lmao!!) i was really worried that it was impossible for my family to afford this school because i'd been told that they don't give out money, but if you have a good record, it's totally worth a try! (and before anyone yells at me about how horrible taking out loans can be, i know hahaha. i'm on the pre med track and hoping that whatever hospital i end up at will help me pay them off! i'm not suggesting that anyone should put themselves or their family in a ton of debt for college lmao) (also, i totally get that the finance discussion was based off of statistics, i'm not trying to argue, just sharing what i've experienced!!)

It is a good American (not necessarily top ranked) school however for the investment many European and Canadian Universities provide more rigorous and challenging programs

  • @firebenderkitty313

That is not necessarily true. NYU has an very broad range of programs and schools. You can't possibly lump everything together and say that location is only the strong point, and the academics are not highly ranked. Stern School of Business is one of the best businesss schools in the country. NYU Langone medical school is #3 in the US. College of Arts and Sciences had about a 13% acceptance rate this year. That is almost the same as Cornell. Seems pretty good to me.

People within academia know of W&M. The common perception of schools is not the same as the industry's perception.

The name power isn’t as important as you think, it’s your talent, experiences, and personality that makes you stand out. I’m probably about your age and you seem wildly naive.

Margaret Mahoney yes certainly, I 100% agree. I have just been really surprised by other people’s reactions when I say I go to NYU. It is very different from when I went to W&M which most people I knew hadn’t heard of. I don’t like it because I think hard work is more important but I thought I would share my experience given the purpose of the video

Most kids that go to NYU are out of towners that wanna be in NYC. Going to school in NYC was a NO THANKS for me. Enjoy your time here. You might end up staying.
