What neo-Nazis have inherited from original Nazism | DW Documentary

What resemblance do today’s ethnonationalistic ideologies bear to those which surged during the rise of the Nazis in the Weimar-era? Quite a lot, this documentary shows. Germany’s far-right neo-nazi scene is now bigger than at any time since National Socialism.
History may not repeat itself, but one can still learn from it. The years of the Weimar Republic were scarred by post-war trauma, political extremism, street fighting, hyper-inflation and widespread poverty. But they also saw economic boom, the establishment of a liberal democratic order and a parliamentary party system. Nobody could really imagine that the Nazis would brush aside the achievements of this young democracy just a few years later. But there were signs, warnings even that all was not well.
So how does that resonate today? How do today’s right-wing populist movements and parties achieve their political aims? Which slogans, images and stereotypes played a role then, and which ones are playing a role now?
The film also looks beyond Germany’s borders. How has Europe changed in the last few years and how have far-right movements been able to gain such influence? In the interwar period, democracies across the continent collapsed one after the other like a house of cards. What about today? Riding on the coat-tails of the political party the Alternative for Germany (AfD) the far-right has become a factor in both national and state parliaments, united by nationalist and often racist ideologies directly linked to those of the 1930s. At that time, global economic crisis and mass unemployment drove people straight into the fascists’ arms. So what will happen if crisis strikes now? Are our democracies and their achievements today any more stable than they were in the years before the Second World War?

@Joey Tomlinson May I make a quick mention of Georgia 2008? Or Turkey in Cuprus in 1973? Or Turkey in Iraq 2008 and 2019? Or Russia into Eastern Ukraine and specifically Crimea from 2014 to present day? The UN condemned all of these invasions but ultimately did nothing, because the aggressors themselves are members of the UN and have the ability to veto any action. The only ones you can rely upon to take action are NATO, and you don't want that. That means world war. It sounds to me like you have a short memory. But even then, that was not my point. Germany was allowed to invade Czechoslovakia in 1939, even though France and Britain promised to defend them against a German invasion. They allowed Germany to occupy Czechoslovakia if Hitler promised peace.

Exactly the opposite. The fact that they are distancing themselves from the og nazis shows that the fact we know about nazis is uncomfortable to them. Tendencies and ideologies passed down through private conversation can not be censored, unless we are talking about a 1984 style sruvalience state. Thorough examination of the ideology of fascism and the simple, but hard to accept knowledge, that we are always at risk to reheating their actions is how you fight fascism.

I don't agree with persecuting someone on the basis of religion or ethnicity. But I do also believe in the right of a country to hold true to its culture and its people. The migrant crisis initiated by Germany's previous chancellor is a good example of an issue that can threaten a country's culture, identity and even safety. While it is important to try to assist others in a humanitarian capacity, it's also incredibly important to maintain the integrity of one's country's culture, traditions, security and people. Countries like the United States and Canada have become incredibly multicultural over the last few decades. And while these two countries have a higher capacity to make room for additional cultures, languages, traditions and people - it has also come at a cost. There are numerous problems arising from the mixing of various cultures and the clashing of their opposing views. This has even manifested into physical violence, and I think that is something that needs to be taken under consideration when we talk about the ability for a country to undertake such a multinational endeavour as accepting numerous nationalities from all around the world with its borders en mass. I say this as an immigrant, with lived experience, who has resided in Poland, Germany and Canada.

there's no such thing as singular identity, all cultures are always mixing just as are people, Germans today are belivers of an asian religion, speak and write under latin influence, speak mostly english as a second language (which is ironic, and also kinda supiscious because, learning and adapting american and britishh cultureis okay, but "muslim" is taking them over?), have ideals of masculinity and society based on greeks ( that are mediterraneans) culture is not still in time, it changes, i doubt any of those "ancestora" thay talk about would recognize these germanic people that look more latin than anything. we can record culture, history, but we can't stop it, in globalized world it is just a matterof time for unification, that's not bad or good, it's a fact. culture is just the new word for race, they can't be of our culture they say, but if you are son of immigrants, was born in Germany, lives there, shares the culture, speaks german, you are not german, why is that? they themselves answer it by denying other options, "right to hold to true to its culture and people", Europe is mixeed all over, germanic, celtic, latin, italic, balkan, even germany is composed of many germanic groups that were swallowed, imagine that guy fighting against the austrian coming back today and seeing his descendants figthing for the "german people"

If I go to china at I Chinese? That is their point. Other countries and ethnicities have different customs and ways of life. They just want to have a “German” society. A huge chunk of the public was against this policy but the government back then didn't listened to it. This ignorance and arrogance towards your own people doesn't go so well and the result is that this people tend to vote for people where they think they do something against it. This negativity isn't against US Citizen, other Europeans, Asian or South Americans... no they target illegal immigrants from the Middle East and Africa which come only here because of the economic welfare and are not integrating themselves. Well actually, the wrong people are called Nazis. The establishment parties were fine with the import of new people. Some of those people are just Nazis, but then for their own people. The Turkish Grey Wolves are a clear example of that, but Arabs have this problem as well to a certain extent. Germany should tackle this problem just as hard as native German Nazism. However, the German government always say "Antisemitism from Muslim immigrants is bad, but..." instead of just saying it's bad. And that's a bad thing. If you make difference between those two groups, German Nazis have a reason of existing. The German government is having troubles with tackling this. Can you imagine what would happen if BLM was bigger in Germany? BLM Germany literally wants the German government to collect ethnic data on their people again. The German government probably is also coming with all kinds of excuses to accept that and that would give even more rise to Nazis. When is Germany going to learn extremism in general is a bad thing?

What's wrong with beeing borned somewhere else having a different ethnicity and religion? Why do we always find labels and reasons to hate each other? Is it because we are weak, unhappy, lost in life and we use excuses to lie ourselves and run away from responsabilities? I bet is easier to pass the outcome of our negative choices to other people, isn't it? But do you really feel happy with yourself? It's funny to hear people say there can be a repeat. Never. I do hope that Germany will not try to repeat the past, because the country will be wiped from the Earth, by Israel, Poland, Greece, Finland, and all the other countries that were so hurt by the Nazis. Germany is being watched, it has been since then, and Israel already said, no more. There will never be another Hitler, Goren, or any of them. These so called Nazis today are dreamers, and they can put their country at risk by provoking vengeance in the countries who lost families in the war. America will not be able to help them if they are harming Jews and Israel comes. Those times are gone. Germany needs to be careful and their government knows this.

Pretty much. Because all it is is stress. Imagine the feeling you get having a massive test that you know you’re gonna fail. Now imagine that pretty much every day before and after you’re constantly reminded of it almost every second you’re conscious. Then after a couple days you accidentally get in a car wreck, one of the most stressful feelings most people experience, and just like with the test, you never stop getting *reminded* of it. Now, fortunately I’m not a crazy racist, but I’ve had this kind of hatred from pure self loathing. It blows, and it’s so hard to get out of it, because it’s very difficult to let hatred go. Because in our minds, why would we let something go that’s the center of *all* our problems? All it does is pile up, more and more, and it consumes every part of your day. You get so mentally exhausted that your favorite parts of the day are either doing the few things you still do enjoy to excessiveness, or when you’re unconscious.

While i do not justify nazis, you have to ask yourself why they think the way they think, there are reasons for this anger and bitterness against the establishment / government. In the same way normal germans voted for the nazi party. Germany had just lost a war, and was now forced to pay back an absurd amount of money for this. Regular germans had nothing to do with this and then suddenly their currency and lifesavings were worth nothing, poor and being spat upon by the french and british they of course got angry and resentful. The only ones that really spoke into the plight of the german people was the german workers party which turned into the nazi party, and when they were elected they did actually rebuild the economy but things turned to hell as we all know afterwards. Point is, we should remember from history but also remember WHY things might have happened in history in order to prevent similiar events. The resolution of ww1 was quite bad and it was very much a big reason why the nazis even rose to power in the first place, same way why far right forces are moving up now when current politicians refuse to solve the problems they have created and demonize people who want to point them out as "racists" and then turn them even more radical.

Your father's words are wise and true but in the context of the events of this historical era in Germany I'm afraid he's missed the point. The NSDAP rose to power not because of the personal failings of the German people but because of the collapse of the German economy with the attendant hyperinflation and impoverishment of the people, the degeneration of morality in the big cities and the real threat of a communist revolution which caused anarchy and gun battles in the streets as the Reds tried to take areas of Germany by force of arms (they were temporarily successful in areas such as Munich until they were put down by the Freikorps). The German people wanted to thrive, as do we all, but one cannot better oneself in a country where there are no jobs, no opportunities and law and order is held together by a militia. Naturally they wanted two things; someone to blame for the state of their country and someone to put it right. It's also important to remember that Germany did not end up in this predicament as a fault of the German people but rather a confluence of unfortunate historical circumstances such as Germany losing WW1 and the knock on consequences of the Treaty of Versailles. I highly recommend you listen to the 1961 speech by Benjamin H Freedman, you'll likely learn much that you never knew and that is certainly not taught in schools or in mainstream documentaries. This man was Jewish himself and personally knew many big movers and shakers of his day, including President Wilson. You can find it here on KZread.

On the other hand you have to submit to the fact that there will be some tension between people just because with any change it requires work and some sort of sacrifice.

That's perfect and true - they are reacting to the extreme left policies. Badly I think, but it is predictable and one reason why I believe one should not make political choices that make a good proportion or the public feel alienated or used. In my view, this was a predictable consequence of sacrificing Germans own housing, welfare, tax & maybe more for the sake of Moral Grandstanding in 2015. It's similar to how extreme pro- crony Corproate politics makes Socialism more attractive (& understandably).
