I am a retired veterinary pathologist who loves microscopy. Your video rekindled my excitement over exploring our world at high magnification. I just purchased your favorite hand of held microscope for camping trips, water analysis where I can use my cell phone to document my findings. You clearly have an expert knowledge of this field & love to share it, as I do. Please continue your exciting work on You Tube! Respectfully, Jim Eastep, DVM

Without going into details, I was once looking at an ants head through an old Swiss microscope (a Wild Heerbrugg M8). The ant was 'knocked out' so it wasn't moving (although the antennae were swaying slightly). The clarity of the microscope was astounding - the compound eyes were pin sharp. Suddenly, it woke up and the mandibles started moving. I literally jumped back several feet in shock and actually fear. It was like an 8k version of some horror movie about giant ants. I actually didn't want to look at it again! That really gave me an understanding of what exceptional optics actually meant.

WOW great intro.I've been collecting scopes for 40 years,i have about 20.Mostly cheaper ones, the best being a swift.Amateur stuff, but I've gotten so much use and learning enjoyment out of them.the last few years I've bought USB corded scopes very cheap ones, and i can say they are way easier to use and give good views with even rough handling.I will defiantly watch your video's,it's great that you started a channel,i tinker with computers and find a scope so useful that i don't know how i got by without it before.thanks a new viewer.

One thing to watch out for: As you say, a lot of these scopes are made in generic factories and then branded by different companies, which opens the door to all kinds of knock-off products. I bought a digital microscope for casual use (I have a Zeiss binocular for "real" studies) and although it was highly rated online and I'd actually seen one in person, the one that came to me wasn't the same. Its software for capturing and downloading images had the right name on it, but it was a long obsolete version that wouldn't work with any modern computer device. It was then that I realized exactly why Amazon sellers will take returns only if repackaged in the original materials, because a closer inspection of mine showed that it had previously been opened and used by someone else before I got it. Undoubtedly they'd discovered what I did and returned it, allowing the seller to collect a restocking fee and then simply send it out again to the next person (me) who had bought one through their Amazon store. Eventually they know that a defective item will be bought for a gift or something, and its problems won't be discovered within the 30-day warranty window, so at that point it's all profit for them, and they'll have made just as much money off of a bad product as they would have if they'd tossed it in the trash and replaced it with a good one. So beware, thoroughly check out everything you buy, and don't miss that return limit window!

I'm sorry. I'm a retired physicist and a microscopist. It's not magnification but numerical aperture that defines the resolution and depth of field of the optics system and therefore the quality. (ref.- Wikipedia). Everything else in your video is pretty good. I liked it.

  • @micro_safari

You are correct. I unfortunately have to strike a balance between giving technically accurate information and being so in the weeds that it alienates beginners and causes people to click off the video. I chose to not bring up numerical aperture because most lower end consumer compound microscopes have objectives that scale magnification and numerical aperture at the same time. Thank you for your comment!

Very nice video. Especially, thank you for the section on surface mount PCB assembly and repair. One needs to have enough room to get a soldering iron, tweezers, and other tools in under the scope. Having stereoscopic vision for depth perception would be great, but that looks like it would make the scope much more expensive.

Spend the money on a lot of diffuse photography lights, and get creative with what you have around to put in the background! We used a printed graphic that I designed as our backdrop. If you want to go that route I recommend getting a printed fabric backdrop, not a vinyl one. The vinyl ones create a lot of glare and are a pain in the butt.

I use the flat screen type for electronics. One of their downfalls is the stand. Stand is great for most stuff but if you need to fit a larger board under the scope you have to remove it from the stand and jerry rig something. On the budget ones the led's are usually too high in the frequency spectrum too white or too blue. Contrast can be way too high. But other than that a budget microscope is a great tool. One trick with a mobile phone is to set it to video and turn the torch (video recording + led lighting) on at the same time. Then zoom in and focus. I would like to see a stand with a longer swing arm that can be moved into a wider range of positions.

We just ordered a bulk shipment of microscope cameras to test them out and figure out which one(s) we will recommend for folks. Check out: microsafari.org/products/hd-digital-microscopy-camera Out of the shipment this one was the best performing out of all of them, including outperforming one that was 3x the price. I'm going to use it to record all future content. It is 4k, has an HDMI output to connect it straight to a monitor, a microSD card to directly record to, or a USB connection if you connect it directly to a computer. Not sure if your scope has a trinocular port, but we also have a variant that includes an eyepiece adapter if you need that. It's pretty amazing, this microscope camera outperforms my Lumix G9 mirrorless camera. I think that microscope camera image sensors must be application specific, because my microscope camera will pick up low contrast microorganisms that my mirrorless camera sensor completely misses. There may also be imbedded firmware in microscope cameras that helps with edge detection and enhancement.

There is one aspect of using a microscope that is becoming more commonplace: Vintage PCB repair. Repairing the traces on, for example, a Macintosh LC logic board needs the use of a microscope to see the condition of the traces and also to ensure that all of the electrolyte/alkaline regurgitation from batteries and capacitors is removed from the logic board. Note: The Macintosh LC series is plagued by being "battery bombed", i.e., severe battery leakage from the PRAM battery that is there to keep time, date, and misc. settings saved.

Yeah a 5k scope in no budget isn’t really viable, you can get great ones much less than that, that will be ideal for your research.

What a superb comprehensive review video 👌👍. Thanks for all the efforts and time. I am from india and want to buy a value digital microscope for looking eprom chip nos. I am in hard disk industry and will be needing it to check disk platters as well. Unfortunately customs and shipping charges here are very high ( actual cost of $60 product might become $ 150) As we are reaching year end of 2023, can you pls suggest a highly reliable ruggged microscope. I want to take a snapshot of the screen as well. For quick basic check smart phone addon microscope will be enough. Another one should be relatively better product. I am also fascinated by micro organisams and will buy one for the same. Keep it up. My best wishes

Check out the Labomed Z6 stereo taxonomy. That's a high quality optic stereo with built in LED top/bottom/gooseneck illumination. It's fantastic for entomology. I'd recommend an HD camera with it. Hard to beat, unless you want to spend the additional money for Nikon or Olympus.

What about the polarization attachment? In my opinion, Andostar AD205 is the best, although for a $60 microscope you will have to buy preparations for $25. This is the price per piece, unless someone knows how to make it themselves.

I would have to go with the TinyScope or the cheap $20 USB-one in order to examine videoheads in situ on the video drums inside VCR's. Perhaps retrofitting the cheap one with better optics could give better results, but it would be overkill and a comprehensive task. About USB. Even the old USB-1.1 is @12mbit/sec specified datarate is absolutely capable of transmitting FullHD 1080p, though it has to be be very compressed, like you see on TV streaming services and so, who'd notice ? People are actually paying their hard earned money for these services and watching it on their 50"-85" monitors. 30-50mbit/sec like you'd see watching BluRays is of course preferrable. And here comes USB-2 with its specified 480mbit/sec datarate. Where did you get the impression, that this interface wouldn't be capable enough ? Maybe the manufactorers of the USB-2 microscopes chosed a 720p videostream and lured you. Anyway, thanks for this upload. Very useful for my decision making and much appreciated. Thanks man. Cheers mate.

I think it sounds awesome. It would probably yield a better image than a regular external smartphone microscope since it is natively integrated into their system. But it will still have the fundamental limitations such as limited magnification due to lack of mechanical rigidity of the device AKA hand shake would make it unusable at high magnifications.

Hi! Thank you for the feedback. I'll put this into the queue for making a dedicated video on. The long story short is that depth of field is directly proportional to the working distance from the bottom of the objective to the sample plane. You get more depth of field when the objective is farther away from the sample.

  • @NoferTrunions

    @NoferTrunions

@@micro_safari What fascinates me is that doctors/dentists use surgical loups that are somewhere around 2-5x that have an extreme working distance like 12-18 inches. My dentist's cost about $5k. Clearly too expensive for hobbyist, it begs the question what might be available for cheap. I also saw a video of a mineral/rock guy demonstrating different microscopes and to get a full depth of field image of a sample, they take multiple "slices" of pics at different depths and then use software to "3D imaging" them together. Results look like SEM. Familiar with 3D scanning, that application totally escaped me.
