    Ive watched all of your "what weapon would this fantasy race use?"-videos, and in everyone, a spear is a good choice. You dont need space to use it, got the range and physical skill/strength to use it too. It's simple enough and has all the advantages. Pointy Stick doesnt seem to have downsides.

    About the wings, one of my favorite writers "Raymond E. Feist" wrote in one of his books, that Demons who use their wings to fly, are mostly light-weighted and/or have hollow bones. The humanoid demons with wings, don't actually use them for flight, but are used to install awe and fear into allies and foes alike. Their fly ability is gained through magic.

    Eroldin - The Lord of Searing Flames I was abou to comment this. If Angels or Demons were to be truly capable of flight, they’d probably need to have hollow bones (which would limit their ability to fight by quite a bit). Besides most representations of humanoids using wings to fly in most mediums either flap their wings once and just kind of hover in the air, or flap their wings as if they were in slow motion. So yeah.....

    Another option, especially true for the things like dragons (western dragons, since chinese dragons don't even have wings) is having gases lighter than air produced and stored in their bodies. It's a matter of the cube-square law. Hummingbirds can fly on wings that small relative to body size just because of how small their body size is- there's a reason there aren't any hummingbirds the size of pelicans. You can get a flying creature the size of a human- some of the largest extinct flying birds had estimated weights of up to 180 lbs and the largest pterosaurs could have gotten up to half a ton. But the humanoid body lacks space to add all the musculature necessary to power such wings.

    Wouldn't the opponent be likely to get stuck within the curve, when using a scythe? I imagine a glaive / naginata with a strong curve, or maybe even a chakram connected to a stick would be easier to 'roll off' the enemy after wounding them. And of course using poison or a venom to make it deadly would be a good idea, since if you used too much force you'd just knock yourself out of flight.

    @@VVayVVard I agree that a traditional agricultural scythe or the fantasy reaper scythe would be worthless in this situation, but Shad has a video in his "Under-appreciated Historical Weapons" series on the "War Scythe." There is an objective they must reach that is at ground level (for example, one of them that was captured, a valuable artifact, etc). 3. @@sassui90 Most sniper rifles (as most guns overall) fire at SUPERsonic speeds whereas all bows fire at subsonic speeds, over 900 m/s (or your 3000ft/s) is definitely supersonic, not subsonic, you might want to learn the correct terms. All sniper rifles are not scoped (and definitely no barrel is scoped). Rifling accomplishes the same result as the plumes in an arrow: stable, straight flight through circular motion so that's not exactly an argument. The rest of your stamenets do check out and I'm not disagreeing wiht you, but you should construct your arguments a bit better. @Hræð Framhliðinni Since general sniper rifle cartridges like 30-06 SPRG weigh around 26 grams with a bullet of 8-11 grams, and a war arrow averages at around 45 grams, your statement is just false. You could definitely carry more sniper ammo but an arrow would have far better damage potential thanks to gravity when shot from above. Both of you, however, fail to consider that 1) The flying people only need to fly above the range of normal war bows, and even slightly inside the range would be possible since the arrows shot upwards would have lost all damage potential long before they start to drop back down 2) The flying people can choose to fly straight above whatever they're fighting, resulting in their enemies potentially firing arrows at themselves and making aiming that much easier, in addition to minimising the range they themselves need to shoot 3) Attaching a bow to their feet would grant them the possibility of using arrows much longer and heavier than a normal warbow could manage, reducing the effect of wind on accuracy and greatly increasing damage potential for the increased gravity effect. Shooting straight down would also not be that much of a problem

    @@houndofculann1793 Not really, i dont care enough about it to learn the specifics to the letter specially when my point was snipers being leagues different from bows, specially when its guaranteed someone will come up and point out whats wrong so yeah... but yeah it is supersonic. I never said ALL sniper rifles are scoped? and idk where in heavens you came up with scoped barrels but anyway And i thought we were talking about the people flying using the bows and not otherwise? ofc they're not gonna shoot straight up... eitherway, arrows are still too light and not incredibly accurate, fletching might help in ideal weather but the higher you are the stronger the winds, even if you compensate you'd need massive amounts for them to be effective at any decent height and even then they would not be efficient... Shad's suggestion of dropping heavy things sounds way more reasonable. @feet bows & heavier arrows No... that just sounds incredibly unpractical, could make it work sure but at that point you might wanna switch to something simpler...

Combined with the fact that she's very smol and have light bones due to coming from a genetically engineered colony. Even then, she has trouble flying on Earth since her home planet had a very dense atmosphere that made it difficult to live on the surface at all, so she carries an anti-gravity device as backup. I can totally see her fighting with flechettes. For the record, she's from a colony of genetically engineered bird people who lived in a city in the sky on an alien planet.

Javelin holster mounted on the center of the back would be quite light and could be accessed because it's behind the head area. They could also be used as a "spear" for melee even though they aren't quite "built for that". The introduced force from a swoop or dive would be plenty enough force to drive the iron through any breastplate or helm

    It seems to me you looked at angles/demons using larger bows in an odd manor. I say this because I don't think such creatures would aim directly below them when in flight. Such creatures could easily fly around their opponents in a circle, drawing the bow string across their chest just as normal archers would, but shooting from the side, at an angle, towards their targets, rather than from directly overhead. This strategy would be be very effective, as winged creatures would be in constant motion, effectively surrounding their enemies and cutting off any chance of escape if they were in an open field.

    Here's another thought: Full body bows. This would be a bow integrated into a boot that you basically aim with said foot. You load and pull back with a hand. The other arm would have the quiver strapped to it since your back is inaccessible for this and a quiver on the hip could interfere with the pulling of the bowstring. (It might need both feet to keep the angle steady enough, I'm not certain. In this case, the connected foot would be a few inches from the arrow in one direction while the aiming boot would go on the other side of the arrow and have a special notch in the side that would be used to line up the arrow.) The added benefit over dropping arrows, in addition to the obvious force increase, is the added ability to aim. Simply dropping something sharp will have a high miss rate as there are so many variables. You need to aim by aligning yourself with the target, but in doing so you then have momentum that changes the trajectory of whatever you drop. Also, they can use it against other flying targets. (Angels & demons often fight one another, after all.) Also for grounded targets, getting them into the sky and dropping them could be a potential tactic with the spiked boots. If they survive the impalement, bring them back up with you before letting them drop, hopefully landing on another target.

    Well done Shad. I appreciate the time and thought you put into these. I like the flechette idea, though I immediately was thinking how hard it would be to accurately hit your targets from safe hight. Stones though less lethal would be cheaper for an army and the bludgeon damage can kill and main very effectively. Diving at an angle would build velocity and unlike flechettes stones that miss a target can bounce to possibly find a different target. Crossbows or javelins would also be useful. I mostly agree with your point about keeping the chest parallel to the ground but it would be possible to shift the body sideways and still keep the wings parallel to the ground, the wings have their own shoulder joints. Some sort of spike or blade attached the thumb area of the wings could also be useful in a melee situation. Flight muscles are very strong. I have more thoughts on this but I'll have to relate them later. Keep up the good work. work

Raise wings, grab arrow from back-slung quiver, Great big slow flap down, Draw--aim--release. Raise wings while grabbing arrow, Great big slow flap down, Draw--aim--release. You'd want a short bow for speed & let gravity help the force. We also have to remember that we're not talking about strapping a wing machine to a human, but we're looking at a 6-limbed creature, which none of us have experienced. I'm pretty sure air-dropped flechettes were balanced to keep pointing down as they fall. As for spears, allegedly there are advanced lance techniques for pulling them out of the enemy as you ride by. Flying humanoids seem to have a lot in common with cavalry, actually.

  • @geodkyt

    @geodkyt

    Light lances, as used for hunting, or the pre-stirrup period, or the 19th Century military lancers when they were light cavalry. Two frequent features of those types of light lances would be very useful for a flying humanoid. First, a simple penetrating point, without harpoon style barbs - a small leaf blade with the back edges sharpened as well would be *highly* effective, but a simple point would be nearly as good. Second, a longish thong for recovery. Used correctly, the lance itself can be released, and the thong held - the passing and the extra motion available by the flexible thong would allow the lance to pull back out and be readily recovered. To avoid the lance becoming an anchor or handhold, you secure it the way police are taught to wrap the things for riot control batons - so long as the hand is kept closed, the baton cannot be ripped away... but if the officer relaxes his grip, the baton will come away without yanking him.into the mob. (Basically, the loop.of the thong is around the thumb, and the thong is wrapped around the hand. Do NOT stick your whole wrist through the loop - that turns your baton into a leash.)

    The fight between two flying creatures wouldn't be just hovering near each other and fighting like humans. It would be more similar to the dogfight of two planes... or bird of prey hunt. You can find some videos of the cameras placed on falcons, extemely interesting. I think I recognize certain maneveurs I know from flight simulators like yo-yo. Now there are reasons why I think that crossbow would be almost useless. Dogfights even with targeting equipment are HARD - both shooter and target are moving in the air constantly changing direction. Historically even with machine guns it was not rare for air duels to end with both fighters spending all their ammo in vain. You may say that the speeds and distances involved would be much smaller however it's compensated by very low speed of the arrow and much higher maneveurability. And you have only one shot in practice, it wouldn't be possible to reload a crossbow in the middle of dogfight. The only way I see is to reach bad guy very closely and shoot then, but still the luck required would probably not justify extra weight and worsened aerodynamics. So I think that such fights would not involve ranged weaponry but instead some air melee. Spears and Shad's sharpened boots would be very useful. Again you can look for the videos about falcons with their claws to see how sharpened boots can be used in the air fight.

    I think the bladed boots would be viable for killing other airborne foes as well, as it's how birds kill each other. Putting the blades below the feet instead of in line with them might be a better idea, but that could make landing difficult if they can't control the direction like talons. They could also have weaponized helmets to mimic beaks, but that's a dangerous weapon to use as a battering ram where legs are designed to absorb impact. Giving the angels bird-like spines that are much better at absorbing impact from the face could be an option, but humanoid angels would find kicking to be a better option, IMO. A lot of the benefit of polearms is the reach and the ability to maneuver the point while you're not in danger yourself. That becomes much less of an option when you're diving at your enemy. The wings also get in the way of maneuvering the polearm in general, making it less wieldy as you've got to move it more directions with more limited movement range. There's also the difference in formations to consider. They'd be more likely to follow bird/fighter formations of a wedge, making it more similar to a cavalry type charge than an infantry one, making longer weapons less viable as you're following the length at full speed.

    One weapon that I think you have overlooked (also thought about it for the Smallfolks video) is the Naginata. This is a japanese spear-like weapon designed for slashing instead of thrusting. Also, shoe weapons could be attached and de-attached mid-flight and kept in a bag or on a pedestal during landing and takeoff, making them more convenient

    When landing, the creature could flap its wings (or possibly just hold them there to act like sails) while leading into the landing with the heels. This should give them enough control and slow them down to the point where they could land safely.

  • @maiqtyson3278

    @maiqtyson3278

    Ya I personally feel weapons like the naganata would work much better for these creatures. You have range✅ you have the ability to go into melee for slashes and cuts on a swoop attack run✅ you get the best of both worlds at that point. Plus, have you ever been going really fast on a bike and broke on the front wheel really hard? For a shoe weapon it’d be the same thing. It’d be much better to simply grapple a human, rip their weapon out of their hand, and drop them from a considerable height. It’s a great way to ambush

  • @qdaniele97

    @qdaniele97

    Spears would be great precisely because they are used for thrusting and you don't need to move them around, just point it forward and strike. Moreover, you probably want the most simple spear that can be effective against enemy (AKA even full-wooden spears if they don't have metal armors) since it's very likely that you would lost it most of the times you strike (you don't want to crash on the ground every time your spear gets stuck in something or someone). For a flying winged-human, a naginata would be even more impractical to use than a sword since it's: - Even longer than a sword... - ...But mostly useless in thrusting; - Very complicated to craft (you don't want to lose it!); - The sharped edge of the blade is in the inside of the curve (so, even if you manage to slash with it, it's very likely you get stuck if your strike wasn't absolutly perfect).

    I once had a battle in my Rolemaster campaign where one of the players' allies were Hira'razhir, a flying race of humanoids with hollow bones. They used specially constructed crossbows designed for flight. They took two rounds to reload, so they were divided into three squads, so in any given round, one third of their force was firing bolts while the others were reloading. The result was devastating to the enemy as they continued to lay waste to the enemies ranks. In conclusion, crossbows are a super effective weapon once they are modified to prevent the bolt from falling out and they still allow aiming, unlike flechettes. I'd love to hear your thoughts Shad. All the Best.

It would probably be best to give the Angel/Demon a Handblade, Reversed Wolverine claws or one of the Warcraft "Demonhunter Glaives", although less Fantasy-Design. A adapted Billhook(Onehanded Tool, not Polearm, although their top part would also work with many of the designs ) would also work rather well and could be used bot on the hands and the Legs Basically everything that would work as a draw-cut, rather than a real slash, because it has a much lower risk of you getting stuck/getting violently stopped, which could result in you losing the part that got stuck

    About going to melee if you can fly, it depends on other factors too. Last time I played D&D 3.5, I made a raptoran cleric and I was by far the tankyest guy in the party (even widout using all my buffs, I was above the warrior by 5AC), and for me, my capacity to fry allowed me to always be able to reposition myself in a way to protect my allies. About using a bow, if you can fly parallel to the ground, you can fly towards the target and hold the bow "above" your head and pull the arrow towards your feet, or you can fly sideways to the direction of the target and use it quite normally, exept you'd be horizontal and need to glide for a little bit. The raptorans use the bow in flight against lower targets by holding with the feet (other races could attach it to the feet, if they can't hold things with it), pull with the hands and shoot while making a "dive". About spears being a one use thing, if you use one with a relatively short point and a stopper, it would probably not become stuck that frequently.

  • @pieroregaldi1259
    @pieroregaldi12592 жыл бұрын

    I see very clearly the points on weaponized feet and the concept of keeping the distance with "gravity empowered projectiles", but as far as we restrict to "hand melee weapons", i think glaives/naginata and such weapons with long blade at the top of a stick would be much more effective on "passing by attacks": as the spear they have the reach advantage and doesn't need to be swinged a lot (you can adjust the flight to do a slashing movement, maybe a complete torsion on the body center when a more strong shot is needed) and you can benefit from the slashing weapons "not remain stuck" advantage.

    A winged humanoid could certainly use a bow brutally and effectively. They would fly to safe locations and stand there firing as they're protected by winged allies drop crap on the enemy. You want out of the box thinking there you go. The advantage? Even against an opponent that can adapt and negate your flight advantage they can't adapt to an attack on multiple fronts.

    What about flails? Or crossbow? trowing spears would work too, but it adds more weight than flachete. I think best way to look how would angels fight is to look at birds of prey. On singular target they just dive and use blunt force to deal a concussion/killing blow. Most often with legs, but they don't have arms. So they would use some kind of weaponized shews, or flail/hammer with longer reach. Spears would be useful in ground attacks and also aerial combat. And of course lets not forget the ability to shit on the opponent. This would not deal great amount of damage, but it surely would demoralize and spread diseases among enemies, especially on open wounds. And what about naginata and similar type of weapon??

Also, taking in mind they can, like, FLY, then can move in a 3D space (unlike us, they could not only move forward, backwards, left and right, but also up and down), so it'd be easier for them to dodge an retreat when that happens, so they can either prepare a side arm or use a ranged weapon.

    Would a crossbow not work?

    Yah, they could strap a crossbow to their shin and aim with their leg, leaving both hands free to reload and draw it. That was my thought. Even a light crossbow shot from on high would have great penetrating power, and the bolts are light-weight. They could do a mini-swoop while they are still at altitude, and raise their knee up to aiming position... literally raining down destruction. Custom flame-oil tips and etc could be used.

    But why?Big heavy crossbow, its purpose in the first place is to accelerate projectiles. But you get your acceleration for free up in the air, so why bother? Cranking up a crossbow takes ages. Grabbing and dropping a flechette takes 1 second. They may even due to terminal velocity have literally the same impact speed.

    yes but only directly below you. light crossbows would give you angled attacks and thus reach while still getting a lot of power with the combination of the acceleration of the CB and gravety. of course it would have to be pretty light CBs or they would need some kind of tool helping with the reloading during flight (for example having the CB attached to a harnish to free up your hands) also all of that is kinda depending onthe fakt that the wings have a fixed oriantation relative to the body. quite of then in fantasy angels/demons etc have wings with variable oriantation witch would allow them to "stand upright" while flying. this would add much more versatility to the crossbows.

    You can throw a dart sideways, dude. It will arc parabolically and end up having much more sideways range than throwing something on the ground, from really high up. Otherwise just fly over to the side more. Definitely not worth all that weight, cumbersomeness, and reducing your rate of fire by like 20x

    Aside from circling above allowing a side angle to use a bow, if your wings are strong enough, you could just armor your wings and use them instead, or maybe just the gust from your wings(or maybe air displacement?) would be enough to knock people back or down as it is strong enough to lift a humanoid..

    I realize I'm a bit late to the party here, but I just discovered this wonderful channel. Watching your video, I'm surprised you didn't consider blunt force weapons like a mace, flail or morning-star. Swooping down gives you quite a bit of speed, allowing you to hit your target with a great deal of force, but you don't need to worry about aiming for gaps in the armor, then you fly back up to prepare for another attack. In a sense, it's using gravity to your advantage, like a flechette, but you're not limited to a certain number of attacks.

    Shad, Thanks for stipulating that fantasy flying humanoids can vary a lot in attributes. I absolutely agree fantasy rarely get wing size right. A thing to consider in these videos is tactics. Dropping weaponized objects on your enemy would be ideal for winged humanoids if they can find or lore their enemy into an open area. Any grounded humanoids with an ounce of survival sense would quickly seek to obtain shelter even under the canopy of trees if nothing else. To try to get the flying creatures to come to them. Even fighting from the ground I could see an advantage for these winged humanoids. They would have the ability to move around the battle field(s) better than calvary. I imagine guerrilla warfare. Fly ahead of your enemy to set up an ambush with ranged weapons. when the enemy starts to rally (if they do) retreat to the air where they can't reach you. Fly away dropping whatever you want on their heads as you go. You could harass them with just a few of your number letting them know they are being watched. While others are setting up other ambush sites, flying ahead to take out the bridge. Flying back to attack your home while you're away knowing you could never catch up to them in time to do anything about it. etc.

    About ranged weapons. There’s a big issue with aim that gets much bigger when you add a significant limitation onto your ammunition due to its weight. And considering the fact that in most settings winged creatures are of much lesser number than most other races, they cannot really defeat the enemy army with one flight. Going back and recharging will take a lot of time, because you cannot quickly ascend to the altitude safe from the longbows, it takes time and distance. So winged creatures would obviously use ranged weapons for often and very dangerous skirmishes, but when they land back they’d become extremely vulnerable for the counterattacks. Thus I can easily imagine them deciding to perform a surprising smash attack with spears and glaives on the enemy troops, counting more on their superior speed rather than keeping safe distance on the air.

    How about a whip/flail hybrid of some sort? Imagine a ball of metal attached to a whip long enough to outrange pikes. You would fly over an enemy formation and swing this thing through their formation from a safe height, knock someone's head off their shoulders and pitch up for another go. The ending could be improved to prevent getting stuck in the target and forcing you to drop the weapon, while at the same time it should not rebound in an uncontrollable way so that it would swing behind you and around your wings. I think that this latter issue could be solved by attaching something that delivers pain significantly below its actual center of mass (imagine a quarterstaff on a rope).

    I have an Aarakocra barbarian NPC in my D&D campaign whose signature weapon is a glaive. She's particularly fond of using it like a lance and charging her enemies or, since it has a 10 ft reach, gripping it near the back and using her momentum to slash. It's also a high magic setting, so she has magic guns (basically laser weapons) at her disposal, as well as the spells bestowed upon her by her patron. Eldritch Blast for the win.

    On the matter of a bow, I mostly agree. A long bow has to be drawn across the body. However, I think it might be possible for the winged person to draw the bow while making a banking turn so their wings are perpendicular to the ground/target. Also, they could possibly briefly tuck their wings during flight to fire off the shot. Of course only being able to use the bow in these instances would limit their rate of fire and allow an observant opponent to anticipate their shots. Also being able to only make one shot on one target for each pass would make it their volume of fire very low. They would still have a range advantage and being on the move would make it hard for grounded foes to effectively return fire.

  • @Vodhr
    @Vodhr3 жыл бұрын

    One thing I was starting to think about with their bow and arrow, and like you said, they can not shot forward as they are gliding/flying forward... But what about strafing? What if the angels fly more towards the left or right of their intended target, and shot towards the side they are strafing the enemy. This way they could feasably pull the bow, and maintain momentum as they fire their arrows. They would obviously have to train to A: Aim with the idea that they are sideways. B: To lock their wings in a glide at the moment before releasing the arrow. But, in theory, it seems like they could effectivlet make good use of arrows, and basicly circle around you while they deliver all their arrows down upon you... So yea, pretty effective it seems. :P

    I'd go with an iron ball on the end of a long chain. Just dive in, release, and bank away. Once it smashes into your target, reel it back in to prepare your next dive bomb. Doesn't even have to be very big, about the size of a fist would pretty much destroy people. This way you maintain a degree of range and don't have to worry about ammunition.
