They take elements I enjoy from different genres of music and put it all into one piece. Dudes not only a talented guitarist, but a talented songwriter writer and composer as well. Dude will be a modern guitar legend when it’s all said and done. Extremely unique and progressive. Imagine his skill level 20 years from now (along with the rest of the band). The drummer is insane as well.

Also, space is used where Rick refers to implied chords. The riffs don't cover the entire arpeggio, just enough to give harmonic direction.

As a bassist, slaping + picking is probably the most unique and powerfull way anyone would play these fast fills, it is basically what gives it it's deep and profond agressive tone, plus the low B string used a lot, it is just insane.

@@ForrestWhaling As an amateur composer, it really doesn't take too long to write an entire song, even technical prog stuff. Once you have the main idea/ riff/ chord progression it's just building from there. It sounds ridiculous but it's true. Obviously only taking a couple hours is still crazy, but yeah, somewhere around 5-10 hours isn't abnormal.

I feel like Rick is somehow able to hear and explain music in all its complexities with greater detail and inspiration than a painter that could recount every stroke of their brush that created a masterpiece. It's incredible that Rick cannot only hear and understand, but also breakdown the music into an appreciable medium for the masses. You didn't have to do this.... but you did. Thank you Rick.

I saw them live in 2017. I was second in line to get my CDs signed and stuck out my hand to greet them. Clay responded: "Woah, no handshakes, only hugs." Then they all proceeded to hug me.

I got to meet these dudes back when they were touring their self titled, and hadn't started playing big shows yet. They ate some of my snacks and were stoked that I had pizza Combos 😂 super super chill, down to earth dudes who were just barely older than me and playing guitar about the same amount of time that I had. Unreal how much more skilled they are though 😂 they gave me some great pointers too, especially Scotty.

This is my introduction to this band. I'm kind of a prog rocker. Just.. WOW. Absolutely LOVE this. Everything about it.

All of their material is top tier, but they really kicked it up a notch when they changed drummers after their first album. My favorite is The Most Hated EP, the compositions are a bit softer than New Levels New Devils, but still technical and melodic with an incredibly full sound... it's remarkable. They’ve grown a lot as a band. Their earlier stuff is way busier and shreddy. With their new stuff they’ve definitely prioritized the song over just flexing the entire time.

8:15 I didn’t even notice all those synths in the track. It’s amazing how many different layers there are.

Felt the same way. I was like "Wow theyre incredible but idk if I can listen to a bunch of guys flipping through their catalog of shredology like OG DreamTheatre". Then KZread brought Playing God back onto my feed, I gave it another listen and I was hooked.

The two clay's are literally the fuxkin tightest rhythm section to ever exist! Those boys literally fit like a glove !

The space the drums and bass leave for those clean guitar tones is just sooooo satisfying.

Crazy seeing the difference in how Rickreacts to this compared to the modern top 10 songs. It's like he's hearing Audioslave or Led Zepplin again for the first time. You can just tell Polyphia blows his freaking mind and it has to be almost impossible to blow this man's mind.

He always positive, and he knows what he's talking about. That's all you need for access to just about anyone in the industry.

This is actual modern music-breaking convention, not using any guitar cliches and played so well. One of the few original bands to come out in the last few decades.

Never heard or seen this guy before, but wow was I blown away with the way he breaks down this bands sound. He really knows what he is talking about from a true knowledge and history based platform. Just incredible. I will admit, from first glance I was skeptical on his knowledge of this new era sound with stuff like trap and effects made with a computer. However it just shows that all this new stuff stems from an already deep rooted rich history. Great stuff here!

I find it very weird that no one in the comments is pointing it out to Rick that it's the producer tag for Y2K, who's been on a lot of their songs.

I've had the great pleasure of doing sound for Polyphia, and I must say that they are the real deal folks, as nice and proficient on their instruments as a sound tech could wish for!

I dont know who's more talented lol. This young man for coming up with such a strange medley or you sir for deciphering it and explaining it in such detail and breaking it down and actually being able to play parts of it lol. Just wow. Not my cup of tea but man I sure can appreciate the effort and skill involved.

And again, what gets me so much in this song, as so often with great music, is the use of contrasts: contrasts between space in the music and it being chockers full, contrasts between sounds which remind me of nature (water drops falling into a pond, bamboo flutes) and sounds at other times that are so futuristic and distorted, the higher pitched ‘acoustic’ guitar sounds contrasted with these heavy, dark bass and drums…, mindblowing contrasts everywhere. Such a great piece-.

Yes. So far I've listened to New Levels New Devils, Muse and The Most Hated ep. I think my favorite tracks so far are Sweet Tea, Champagne, Goose, Yas and OD

My favourite thing about the song is the way the guitars cover each other. The layering and the filling through harmony. As an aspiring producer, this song gives me a musical woody.

Tim is almost otherworldly, must be how people felt when watching/meeting a Beethoven/Bach during their life. He almost challenges me to keep up (fat fingered chance here LOL) instead of giving up. I rank him up there with John 5 for pure joy when watching, they both just enjoy music and it shows. Been playing almost 40 years (51 now, cut my teeth on hair metal/classic rock) and I will never be that good, but it doesn't hurt at all. May the band survive the fame train.

Now we've learned how many times Rick can say "Whoo!" in the span of 20 minutes.

Holy crap that's absolutely mind blowing hearing the parts separately. I had no idea the synth was as complex as it was and how much it added and hearing the drums + bass was fairly breathtaking because they actually play this live. I was in drum line all 4 years of high school and I've never heard such amazingly timed and performed parts. Other reactors have mentioned the bass being a good mix with the drums but I could never pick them out enough to hear how truly insane it is, so thank you so much for showing it to us so well; I've gotta check out more of your videos

This gives me hope that guitar-based music has a real future! They say the music we listened to in our formative years sticks with us, but this is different in a really good way. No autotuned pop here! And even though I grew up on the original R&B, this trap sensibility is not lightweight stuff.

Just a note, the whistling noise at the beginning is actually Y2K's producer tag, he uses it on all of his songs, even before GOAT, but it just works so damn well. Ari is a genius!

It’s also the sound of a loon. A loon is a duck-like bird that’s native to Canada, and their cry sounds exactly like that.

I freaked when i first heard GOAT. I’m basic, so i knew Y2K from bbno$ and Yung Gravy. When i heard his tag on GOAT, i instantly fled to google to look up the credits for the song. lol

Music is the best thing we got going for us.

This is just some brilliant stuff. I'm not as old as Rick, but I have been feeling older as I watch so many of my musical heros die over the last ten years. I am really heartened to hear someone bring something really fresh and original to our ears. I was feeling that interesting new music was getting rarer and farther in between over the last twenty years or so. While this is still true on macro commercial level, there has been SO much going on in prog and metal! To see musicians like this really rethink things from a different perspective (maybe a Martian one?) is so cool! I love how they used commonalities in dub step, trap, classical, and flaminco and created something truly unique with it!

We need a remix with Rick's "Whoooo"s at the end of each verse XD

Never heard these guys before. First line was like wtf? By the end I was totally getting it. Perfect rendition of EDM, but on instruments. Insane that they can sound so much like machines. That hi hat! Didn’t know that was possible! Love it!

People get inspired with different genre and come up with something legendary in their genre and give the world an epic song, too good, loved the video and Tim is a pure example of consistent hardwork and humbleness.

I love how excited you are about music. You clearly live in the experience of the sound. Earned my sub for sure.

You're more right than you think. Tim writes on piano, and makes the left hand bass/rhythm guitar, and plays the right hand as melody

I find the most impressive thing about this video is the fact that you have the actual stems. I would kill to have them to freely explore like what you've done. Being able to hear different isolated parts of the song is super cool to me, personally. Picking up on all those little nuances that you might not otherwise hear in the full mix is just awesome. Not to mention your extremely in depth dive into the structure and fundamentals of the song is super appreciated. I've LOVED this song since my first time hearing it and you've really just made me appreciate the final product so much more. You've got yourself a new sub. Can't wait to check out more in depth stuff like this.

Absolutely correct!

One of my favorite things about the trap influence here is that Phrygian scale modality. In trap music you often hear an emphasis on the scale degrees that are just a half step away from each other. it gives you a really strong pull toward resolution. trap music also works really well in harmonic minor for that reason! Love the theory talk, Rick!

This "What Makes This Song Great" video is one of my absolute favorite music analyses. Thank you Rick for your treasured and immensely thorough and knowledgeable insight on many of the great music artists.

Love your enthusiasm, so much so you’ve got me into these. Loving that album, can’t stop listening to it. Incredible musicians

As a guitarist, I always loved the guitar parts in this song. This video made me really appreciate the rhythm section in this band. The whole band is just so talented

@@martinpaddle kinda of get annoyed when people say this. Improvising can occur in lots of different genres. Jazz also has pretty specific harmonic language and sound. Something otherwise would be classified as jazz influenced

All the guys in Polyphia are absolute masters in their respective instruments! I found the sound of this song very refreshing when i heard it for the first time some time ago.
