What Level Of Liver Enzyme Should I Be Concerned With?

Ғылым және технология

Are you having ongoing slight elevations in your liver?. Maybe you were told it's perfectly normal and you shouldn't worry about it. In this video I'm gonna go into some of the details on why that may or may not be appropriate for you. We're gonna look at what the optimal levels of. Liver enzymes are for males and females, so you can better understand what to do for your own health. What level of liver enzyme should I be concerned with? So mainly we're looking at this from the perspective of you get a blood test back and you might have elevated liver enzyme tests on there. This could be the ast, the alt or the GT and ASTs usually written out as as aspirate amino transferase in alt.
Reference: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27995...
00:00 Introduction to Liver Health and Enzyme Levels
01:05 Understanding Optimal Liver Enzyme Levels
02:05 What to Do with Elevated Liver Enzymes
04:46 Conclusion and Further Resources
Written out as Alanine Amino transferase. Most of the time the GGT isn't done, but sometimes if you're looking specifically at a liver function test, the G G T will be included. There are a few other liver tests that may be included in a liver specific test.
But these are the three that are of most importance for your liver. I imagine in other videos why these levels might be high and some other testing you might want to consider doing. If you end up with elevated levels of these liver enzymes. These enzymes do come from your liver, but they can be found to a lesser extent in some other tissues as well.
So with all that being said, at what level should you start to be concerned when your liver enzymes are high? How high is too high? The reference range for your liver enzymes are gonna be slightly different from one lab to the next.
typically the level for the AST or aspirate transferase is gonna be reported as. Between 10 and 40 units per liter and alanine amino transferase between seven to 56 units per liter. So those are the reference range, and
Usually if you fall within those parameters, you're not gonna get flagged as high or low. By the left, mild elevations are generally considered to be maybe one to two times the normal limit moderate would be two to three times, and then severely high levels are gonna be in the thousands. So then the question is, what do you do when your levels are in the sixties, seventies, or even fifties?
Are these really a problem? Should you be concerned if your liver enzymes are. On the upper end of normal or slightly above, this is actually a pretty common thing where you see the lab isn't flagging it, but it is slightly high. I see this very commonly in my practice.
There's usually a good reason for that, but that doesn't mean it's actually in the optimal range. So optimal or a true healthy range for alt is gonna be arranged between 29 and 33 units per lit for males and slightly lower for females. 19 to 25 levels consistently above this, meaning multiple tests that are higher than this probably should be investigated, but with causes, we're not gonna get into the causes here because there's other videos on that topic.
We should check those out if you're interested. But the same approximate ranges can be used for the AST and G G T to make things simple and straightforward. I usually use 25 as. General reference range for both males and females. If it's above that, that could be a problem. But of course there's some leeway depending on if you're male or female and which tests we're actually looking at.
But that's a rule of thumb that I usually go off of. Now, transient elevations, one test above 25 is nothing to be concerned about, is the consistent elevations and you know, how much more than 25 is it is. 50, is it, you know, 30? That's gonna really tell you determine what the next steps are gonna be.
A lot of times when it's slightly above, it's not really something to be concerned about. But when they start to get into the upper end of the reference range there in the fifties, that's when you wanna start looking a little deeper, especially if they're like that after multiple tests.
So if you want more details on elevated liver enzymes, check out my other videos on this topic. There's also a very detailed paper that goes into a lot more detail on why we're establishing 25 as a normal, healthy, optimal range. The basis of it is, you know, if you take a sick population and try and create a reference range from that, You're gonna have a sick reference range, so that paper goes into a lot more detail.
So if you wanna check that out, it'll be in the description. So that's all I had for this video on what level of liver enzymes should you be concerned with. Let me know what you think in the comment section. I'll be curious to know , by your testing and understanding is coming along.

Thank you. You’re so kind to share your knowledge. So clear and easy to understand. Our doctors don’t have time to talk to us like this-because of the pressures of insurance companies. I really appreciate this. I was nervous after learning that my AST is 39, not so much anymore, but I’ll still email the doctor just as in case, as you suggested this is for informational purposes only. You’re such a wonderful person for sharing your knowledge. :-)

67 yr old female non-smoker, non-drinker, trying to be vegan and went off of veganism last year in 2022. Consequently, I my AST went from 36 from check up in March to 42 this check up in Sept, and ALT went from 46 to 68. I am currently taking TUDCA and milk thistle and such with my doctor's approval and going back to veganism strictly ( and this time I really mean it!) Thanks for great video. I bought a pack of gall bladder & liver test kit with strips. My tests have shown 6.5 pH and other markers that look either one step low or normal with color guide but the didn't include an instruction sheet. Cholesterol went from 140 to 180 in short time I went back to animal products. I would love to hear any advice. Great channel, liked and subbed.

Liver enzymes can be affected by a number of variables - for instance, I started an intense weightlifting 6 day per week routine. My enzymes were high, 180 and 80. I discussed with a physician friend of mine who told me not to worry. I took a few days off from lifting prior to my next blood test (and my body had become more accustomed to the routine), and they were back to normal/near normal.

@BabyGangsterIsMe I've thought of slightly abnormal liver enzymes as analogous to a skin rash: it CAN be indicative of a serious issue, but it could also be caused by a number of fairly innocuous issues. Bottom line: Keep an eye on it, but certainly don't jump to conclusions about your overall health based just on this one factor.

I'll wait until the test arrives and then I'll go to my own Doctor and then "maybe" Hepatologist. I'm not going to get overwhelmed at this time. I have plenty of other health issues I have been working on. *I don't drink alcohol or smoke at all* *I only drink Water through my Berkey* *I'm working on my weight* *My diet is Keto at the time, if I need to change, then I'll do it at the right time* . *I exercise 5 days a week* I will ask family member who's the Best Hepatologist in the region, since they are in the medical field and if I really need this specialist, Wait and See. *I always bring my spouse with me to understand the results* .

I completely lost my appetite and could only drink and take non-solids. I am still unable to eat very much food now. I was 83 years old when that happened. It’s nothing sort of a miracle that I lived. Do you suggest any lifestyle to maintain good liver health? Thank you, Russell.

I have elevated GGT and Alt, ggt was 431 and Alt was 45. I am not a drinker, wil have a drink on occasion only. For the past month I have changed my diet, drink 2L water daily, take walks and touch NO alcohol or sodas. My ggt came down to 285 but alt went to 95? Ultra sound shows liver is nornaml in size, light echogenic. Pancreas, gallbladder and kidneys normal also. I have also been diagnosed with Leaky gut, which I am taking L Glutamine, Akkermansia muciniphila and other probiotics as well as butyric acid. Why did my Alt increase?

My Alt is 55 in Canada if your in the range of 17-63 Alt your in the normal range. Anything more is lightly elevated if your in 95 your close to slightly elevated but nothing to be panicked about. Your Diet, cut sugar and salt and eat healthier no junk food. Also when i started going to gym my elevations came down it helps. Drink Coffee brings elevations down. You have a Fatty Liver it sounds like do something now about it before scarring happens later on in life. Best advise.

@@swintegrative the reason I asked about the supplements is because last year I was seeing a gastroenterologist for my liver enzymes I was also taking a lot of supplements for osteoporosis around 12 different supplements so he told me for three months to stop taking all of my supplements and come back in 3 months do blood work so I went back three months later no supplements in my system then the blood test showed that my liver enzymes went drastically down So he told me to only take vitamin D3 because I was low and he told me not to take any supplements only vitamin D3 then I went back to my primary caregiver I told her I didn't feel comfortable only taking vitamin D3 because of my osteoporosis I felt that D3 wouldn't be enough, so I added a couple of other supplements an herbal supplement for bone health an herbal vitamin C along with my vitamin D3 so I had my next blood work done in January and they showed my liver enzymes went up a little bit ,, since then I switch supplements so currently I'm taking The garden of Life brand Brow Bone, Magnesium fish oil and I'm still taking the vitamin D3, but I also take ashwagandha maca powder and spirulina so I'm worried that next time I have my blood work which is in April I'm worried if it'll show that my liver enzymes have gone up from taking my supplements but I need my supplements for my bones and overall health, I saw one of your past videos where you mentioned that exercise can increase liver enzymes I do work out,, working out is part of my osteoporosis treatment routine So now I'm just concerned, I eat a healthy diet, I eat healthy fats from both plant and animal foods and I also eat sugar from fruits but no added sugars , fats and sugar seem to also be blamed for liver enzyme problems I just don't know what to do!!
