Our first look at Todd Phillips’ new film Joker Folie à deux or Joker 2 here, and boy does it look like something! It’s crazy how the rumor that this was going to be a musical was actually true and they’re beautifully leaning into that aesthetic. For better or worse, in my case for better, the Joker movies are ones that really wear their influences on their sleeve, and having the visuals of a classic Hollywood musical fill the screen but like…Jokerfied makes for something fun and exciting, like this weird 70s pastiche crossed with La La Land or as the internet has already dubbed it: “Ha Ha Land.” Director of Photography Lawrence Sher continues to be the MVP of these films (along with presumably Hildur G and her haunting music) filling the frames with striking visuals and allowing the grime and grandeur of this world to seep through the screen. The cinematography, score, and Joaquin Phoenix's unsettling performance worked in unison to carry the first Joker film all the way to the Oscars and presumably, Warner Bros. has the confidence to believe they can do it again with Joker 2 and based on the trailer…there’s no reason to think otherwise seeing as I’m already more in on this wild swing for the fences take on the clown prince of crime than I was in 2019!
Not only are we getting the first non Margot Robbie Harley Quinn with Lady Gaga Harley Quinn, but Folie à deux looks to be the bold, weird, inspired kind of filmmaking I crave from the comic book movie genre. Who knows if we’re going to cap the series at two or if we’re going to get a third Joker movie about him finally meeting Batman? The chronology of this world is insane, but it could still be something interesting, and with a clear vision at the helm, I’m excited to see what Joker Folie à deux has in store for us. Who knows? Maybe it’ll put a smile on our faces.
Griffin (@griffschiller) gives you his Joker 2 trailer reaction, Joker 2 trailer explained, Joker 2 theories, Joker 2 easter eggs video and Joker Folie a Deux trailer review as he breaks down and explains what audiences can expect from the new Joker movie and Batman spinoff. People should remember that South Park’s first movie was a musical, probably more of a musical than this will be, and it did just fine and is still reviewed favourably. This looks like one of the rare cases where the musical elements are just as much a character as Arthur, not just randomly bursting into song and dance cause they’re happy or sad.

He’s one of the rare actors up there with DDL where you know the movie is going to be Oscar nominated if his name is just attached to it, and he’s been clear that he wouldn’t return for a sequel unless the story had to be told.

    Quick theory: Joker sees harley for the first time, creates this entire world of a romantical sort of mad love where, Harley is head of heels in love with him, and becomes the person who helps him in his trial, and in the end it's shown to us that it was all completely fabricated in the jokers mind, and the movie end on the final shot of Dr. Harleen Quinzel speaking to the joker saying that she wants to see the real him (because if you focus on the final shot, it almost looks like she's wearing a white lab coat in the two way mirror). This causes joker to laugh because he likely went though this entirely fabricated relationship that had it's ups and downs, and likely ended with him breaking up with Harley, only for the real Harley to seemingly validate his feels, though it's probably the real harley trying to understand the joker. Which will likely result in an off screen mad love plot that could lead into a third and final movie.

    I thought the idea of the Joker 2 being a musical so off-putting until I saw the trailer and now I get it and I'm looking forward to it. I don't like musicals at all but I think this movie is going to do some kind of special with the concept like it's all going to be a part of their Madness and as long as it's something that enhances the story and not the whole movie I'll be happy with the musical part. But I really do hope this movie on a different note shows the Joker becoming more of a menace to society than just a crazy guy that's by himself

    The first film ticks the box of the unreliable narrator and the killing joke. It’s a perfect introduction for the character without Batman. The next best thing was to introduce Harley Quinn and give him what he always wanted, someone who loves him and can make him feel whole again. The next best step following this film would be Batman but 🤷🏼 (These films can be what Venom is but better)

    All you have to do is make ANY damn movie with The Joker character in it nowadays, and WHOEVER portrays him will be acclaimed as a genius. (Well, maybe not Jared Leto.) Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Joaquin Phoenix, all were acclaimed for their interpretations of the role.. It's almost de rigueur to praise any portrayal of The Joker. What does that say about the human psyche?

    Imagine if Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker & Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn appears in Robert Pattison’s The Batman Part 2. That would’ve been an amazing crossover. I wonder if Bradley Cooper is coming back to produce Joker 2 (since he also directed the first film). This would be the 2nd time he works with Lady Gaga after directing, writing, producing & starting in A Star Is Born (also distributed by Warner Bros Pictures)

    Is it weird i want more joker films? Like maybe the next one is a heist movie and then IN THE 4th one we introduce BATMAN. But it’s a horror movie from POV of joker where he is just “living his perfect life” he finally has everything and there it is a horrifying bat figure and Joker can make out if he’s imagining it or it’s real and his obsession with the bat figure as he realises that it’s real, it’s someone just as crazy as him, a potential Partner or a crazy new obsession. Like Flirting with the ghost. It will give us chance to see batman from a POV of a criminal. Be scared of him. We’ve had too many versions of his pov at this point and more by the time, if and when this happens.

    They are gonna double down on the shtick of the last movie and when you find out that when the credits roll in the second one that NONE of it was real and 100 percent in his head unlike the first one that actually had a few real moments back and forth, you're gonna realize why we don't do sequels anymore and we don't do good movies anymore.

    Its depiction of every subject matter is so surface-level and simple-minded that it's hard to be fully immersed in its world. Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic, so is the direction of photography, but Joker as a film is not particularly original or deep.

They showed the impact that mental health issues has on a person, they showed the way people with mental health issues can be neglected & treated badly, they showed how it can stem from abuse and trauma etc. What more can they do in a 2 hour film for it not to be considered surface level?

    @FlareDope There's no nuance to anything. Arthur gets bullied and discouraged by literally everyone he encounters whether they know of his condition or not. It's a lazy way to make us root for the main character by surrounding him only with even more terrible people than him. Plus the messaging gets kind of iffy by the end, since the director clearly glorifies Arthur's acts as freeing instead of, you know, completely insane. The last scene is a little too fun to watch, and it shouldn't.

  • @FlareDope

    @FlareDope

    Ай бұрын

    @@magicalex95 And is that not realistic? People are shitty, and most were to Arthur. Though not everyone (the dwarf character was nice to him). Also we are watching the Joker. In the Joker’s mind it was freeing. The director doesn’t need to explain to us that killing is bad, it’s like expecting Rockstar to explain to everyone that slaughtering random people in GTA is bad - that’s obvious.

Are people seriously forgetting that Joker was an adult who killed Bruce's parents in Batman '89???? He was much older than Bruce already! With that said, this film looks fucking fantastic!

    A musical works perfectly for the Joker and I don’t think people get that. This is Todd Philips’ interpretation of the character and he’s very dramatic with the makeup on and he has constant delusions/hallucinations so who’s to say those moments don’t have music in them to amplify the situation.
