Can I be a plumber in China? I am a tattoo artists, can I move to China and start a business? I want to start a pizza place in China. Can I do that?
Winston and C-Milk have been asked this question hundreds of times, and today we decided to tackle the difficult question of what jobs are available to foreigners in China?
Most foreigners who come to China end up teaching English, of course, but it seems more and more westerners want to come check out China without teaching English. Many western people see China as a break from their boredom (which it absolutely can be), but uprooting your life back home and moving to China to start a business or pursue the same skill that you were practicing back home isn't the cakewalk you might think it is.
Enjoy our list of jobs you can and cannot do as a foreigner if you want to work in China.
We answer all of these questions and more in this video.

I use to feel I couldn't live in China also, but after vacationing in China about 15 times I fell in love with China. I live in the States and there's many things I love about China that I didn't realize until I spent more time there. Food, culture, family values, travel, and safety. I can walk all over China and never fear getting shot or robbed like in the USA. its really quite refreshing. I met my wife in China, and I'm quite lucky that she loves me. Our baby will even be a Chinese citizen, mainly because I've come to appreciate the family unity and culture of China compared to the west.

be a "programmer" doesn't make you a good programmer, I work in a (kinda big) videogames company in China and our programmers sucks terribly, and our games are pretty damn bad. @@randomcallum I know this is an insanely late reply, but Chinese universities are extremely easy to get into as a foreigner but extremely difficult to get into as a Chinese person, hence it being easy to get a degree there if you come from, say, Europe, whereas a Chinese person would face less harsh requirements applying in Europe. It's a strange situation where both countries are easier to apply to than their applicants' home countries

Okay. If you want to get a job in China and you have a college degree and some funds, go to school there for one year to learn putonghua. Don't go to a 2nd tier language school. Find an actual gov't-run university with ties to the system. Start looking for a job right away through the system. Talk to the professors and tell them your educational background and skillsets and ask to be introduced to the career center. They will then help you look for a job if you satisfy some basic requirements. I've kinda done this myself at one point but didn't go through with it. I got the job offer, but by the end of the year I'd become disillusioned enough with China that I chose to leave. But one friend of mine stayed and now he works as creative director in an advertising firm in Shanghai. Nowadays my company sends me to China fairly regularly and I did spend more time in China than anywhere else in 2009-2011, but I definitely don't want to stay there. I'm huaxia, so unlike Winston and C-Milk there is a path for me to obtain Chinese citizenship. I actually have uncles and aunts who went back in the 60s and are now Chinese citizens. But I definitely don't want to stay there permanently.

Creativity, drive, innovations - your statement on the lack of these characteristics is so on point. My company ten years ago, hired around a dozen of supposedly the best engineers (paying them like $75k) in Bejing and spent $5M to set up an innovation center. Four years went by, no new product launch at all. They were polite and somewhat pleasant given the Chinese accent. Finally, after five years, they did a user interface translation from Japanese to Chinese characters of a Japanese market product for launch in China. We learned that indigenous chinese engineers don't have these characteristics as it make their compatriots look bad. The way we fixed it was to separate them, send over an expatriate and put them through a western boot camp for a year to deprogram them from this mindset. And to boot, we found out that non Chinese companies cannot fire Chinese employees unless they committed a crime! We got rid of them by moving the center from Bejing to Shenzen. They are good at doing well defined jobs but anything that require self-drive and innovations you won't find too many of them. We tend to find those in Hong Kong though. Now we have learned also that indigenous Indians are just as lacking in these characteristics as well as being passively aggressive too. It's only when these folks leave their cultures and live in the West that these desirabe, need I say intrinsic humanistic characteristics blossom.

But, China has created a China for Chinese... which all countries should have done, looked after their own before others... every other country is too busy trying to diversify and multi-culturalize which is destroying their self identity. Here in Australia just a short walk in the suburbs u will see more people originating from overseas than actual Australians. What's worse if you say that out loud people will call you a racist lol.

Honestly, when you talk to companies online before going to China you get a lot of hassle. A lot of horrible companies make you jump through hoops then flake out. I went on a tourist visa and had probably 7-8 job offers within 2-3 days. I worked without the Z visa and eventually had to go to HK and pay a visa service to take care of my Z visa. I'm glad in many ways I did it that way. The company I'd thought I was going to work for ended up being HORRIBLE. I'd of never known had they represented my visa and I'd of went over to work for them. It just seems China is backwards, so to do things correctly is probably more difficult.

Hi guys, very insightful and useful comments HOWEVER, one or two points that I think may be worth mentioning. I am from the UK, studied Chinese at university and hold an HSK level 6 certificate. I worked in Shanghai and then in Chengdu for various games companies on crappy local contracts making not much more than what you describe; that much is accurate. However, in Shanghai, I ended up working for Square Enix (Final Fantasy, Championship Manager, Hitman etc.) and in Chengdu I got a job at Take-Two Interactive (parent company of Edinburgh based Rockstar North), and last year I GOT AN INTERVIEW for a job at Rockstar North in Edinburgh which I totally fucked up because I couldn't understand the interviewer's thick Glaswegian accent. Needless to say, I went on to find a plethora of amazing non game related jobs in France and the UK which would not have happened if I had not got those jobs in Shanghai and Chengdu. Yes my job was badly paid and yes I was treated like shit, that is absolutely true BUT there is no way in hell in 2012 recession ridden or later that I would ever have had a hope in HELL of getting a job at either of these companies with the thousands upon thousands of applications they receive. I was able to score jobs at those companies because as you mention in your other videos, these companies are not famous in China though they have large presences there. That means if you have decent Chinese like SerpentZA or C-Milk, you can score jobs at some pretty amazing companies, albeit for shitty pay. Just the experience/opportunity alone was worth the huge pay cut. Many of my friends in England studied game design at university full time and have spent their whole lives working in call centres and supermarkets; as those same companies are hugely oversubscribed in my home country. I am a '中国通' and have a large amount of expertise on China, yet I still find your videos very useful and informative. Please keep it up.

Im not comme ting on the fact its a low paid job btw, but there is a massive difference between the ordinaire programmer (which you're referring to) and lets say someone who works for google or baidu on ai. Developers are a dime dozen in the west too, its the skilled ones that make a difference. not being negative, stating facts. I love your videos, subscribed and keep on watching them

I can say from personal experience with various expat friends in Guangzhou, that a person CAN come in with a skill set, but there is one caveat. You would need to be hired on by a big foreign company like Siemens, Bombardier or similar. I had two good German friends who were welding engineers. They made crazy big money, great per diam, which included money for housing and daily expenses. Another friend from Sweden who was a master carpenter, he worked for Siemens, constructing subway car framework hidden beneath all the plastic, metal and veneers. I had three friends who had I.T. certification, and so worked on contract for Chinese companies through a foreign employer. So it can be done, just got to hook up with the right company.

It is indeed a respectable job and they are more well paid than most English teachers in China. I have made a video about an American talking about his teaching experiences in China and he personally admits that it is not fair that he gets a lot more salary than other Chinese professors in the English department just because he is a foreigner. haha

One of the best ways to seek employment in China, other than being English teachers, is to enroll into a Master program in a Chinese university. The latest policy (starting 2017) will allow you find jobs right after you graduate (w/o prior work experience). Currently China is undergoing a series of reforms to attract foreign talents, and I believe this is a good sign and will continue. These measures are critically important to sustainable development & prosperity in China. I also believe the Majority of Chinese in China want to have foreign co-workers. On KZread there are some 'politically sensitive' Chinese (or pretending to be Chinese) are nobody but self haters. They represent nobody but themselves.

And since they work for pennies they're now doing almost all the coding and they've been in the US so long they control the project management and just refuse any bugs they can't fix and say the bugs don't exist (basically, f u testers and customers). Got into a disagreement with a manager once when I asked why we were hiring people who didn't even own a computer and had no interest in the field - they claimed it didn't matter - believe me, it does. Those people had zero interest in improving their skills.

From my observations, there are two types of Chinese students in western countries. One type of chinese students really do very bad on their academy and can not be admitted by good chinese universities or even colleges. Since westerner college diploma is stilled valued in china, some rich kids only try to get a degree in western countries and go back to china to start their career. Another type of chinese students get admitted to western universities due to their excellent academic performance. A lot of them will stay in western countries after graduation due to comfortable western lifestyle, but some of them will return to china for better career development opportunities.

bird718 I'm not discounting what you're saying, but I don't know if it's as simple as you say it is. It's my opinion that very common functions of technical jobs may be actually be better done by the Chinese counterparts. In the programmer and doctor example, I'd say that writing common programs like math related calculations or search queries and remedying physical wounds or diagnosing common cold/flu/infections may be better or more efficiently performed by the Chinese professionals. And that's mainly due to repetition and sheer volume of number of times those tasks are done. But if you're trying to build the next Siri/Alexa (AI) or diagnosing rare diseases or cutting edge medical research, then the US counterparts would excel. It's probably due to a mix of more freestyle thinking and better funding. Again, this is just my opinion based on what I've seen. I don't know enough details to say for sure.

Having had to deal with Chinese students at my university I'm not exactly convinced of them being superior to their western counterparts in any department other than laziness. In my experience they're much more likely to look up some ill suited copy n' paste solution on the internet than to try to create a solution to a problem suited to actual the problem at hand on their own. My guess as to why is that Chinese are taught to cram read and memorize things rather than use any methods that require some form of creativity. They're also a menace when it comes to cheating in exams. My old university used to have really lax policies when it comes to exams, but they had to make them much more strict (one teacher described them as Kafka-esque) simply because of how often they caught Chinese students trying to cheat.

Not sure what you're trying to say, but when I talk about Chinese students I do mean people born in and raised in China, not descendants of immigrants from China born over here. The ones born and raised over here share our values toward hard work and honesty. I guess in the end the Chinese attitude towards working hard, being honest and doing a good job is pretty similar to the what the Irish are infamous for.

Actually in Shanghai the government does change business and travel visas to residence permits, totally bypassing the single entry Z visa. A "work" Z visa is just an entry permit, it is quickly replaced by a residence permit, which lasts 1, 2, 3 5 years etc depending on whatever your company requests for you. A residence permit is what gets renewed every year.

Meh. My company actually partners with China Huadian and there was a time BOD went into full-on witchhunt mode because emails were being ignored by field managers and Huadian personnel in Beijing. Later we found out that their email server BLOCKS ALL FOREIGN EMAILS. Here's a Chinese major trying to run an international business and they can't even receive email from their foreign partners. I'm one of those company engineers Winston mentions, and having spent several years in China, I can confirm that telecommunication issues still predominate even after we set up our own infrastructure.

Actually, they do. Go check out Winston's take on the foreigner classification system. You CAN get something similar to a green card issued to you if you're a 1st class foreigner who satisfies a very specific criteria. They'll even offer you citizenship if you're huaxia (of Chinese descent). The problem is just that 99.999% of foreigners in China don't fall into this category. In 2005 I almost fell into this bracket because I had a master in Aerospace Engineering and an actual US security clearance from grad school days when I had to do part of my research in NASA labs. They kinda cooled down when they realized my research was some esoteric stuff and the NASA lab access was for a vacuum chamber since my school was too poor to afford one.

Find an employer known internationally. For example, I know of one kid (23 when I met him) from France who worked as a translator for Shanghai Electric Group in 2011 then leveraged that experience and connection to get a job with Black & Veech in the US around 2015. It's especially handy if your work gets you sent abroad to meet with potential - ahem! - future employers there. That said, be careful because this is a career trajectory that might get you sent to weird places. Said kid is now working somewhere in Africa where B&V is a supervisor for a project supplied by SEC. Basically, have an adventurous heart.
