You can get a Chinese permanent resident card through a few different methods (marriage is one way). which is way better than the visa process. You can work and open your own business and earn money the same as any other Chinese resident
They are now offering 10 year tourist visa's that are good for 90 day stays. My wife is Chinese and we are going to Chengdu in September, depending on how it goes we may retire there in a year or two and then switch to a spousal visa.

A problem with the spouse-visa, as you describe it, is political. Suppose relations between the USA and China deteriorate further and the USA ends dollar transactions with China. In that case, having passive income from the USA would not be helpful. One would be married to a Chinese woman and live in China with her totally dependent on her resources. How long would that last? How desirable would such a dependency be?

China is one of the best country where the government really take care of their people, to a point, I, as a Chinese living in the West for decades, would think people in China are bit spoiled, they take for granted for everthing and complain a lot and want more. They don't really know the things they can enjoy are not all available in the West, like things mentioned above, and individual freedom which is more than in the West! Don't stick to concept, judge by the reality on the ground, it doesn't matter that much if a government is called socialist or capitalst or communist, in the end, the key importance is Good governance vs bad governance!
