Huawei's Failure: Quality Control in China is a Crapshoot

Quality control is a major issue in China, where corner cutting is the norm in a lot of companies. The structure of business is a bit different than in the west, therefore, it is a bit of a crap shoot when buying Chinese products. Recently Huawei, a company famous for making the Google Nexus 6 phone, came under fire for using inferior parts for the internals of the phone. This happens more than you might think, even for exported products.
Join us today as we talk about this in more detail!
SerpentZA and Laowhy86 will avoid all highways, skip all of the typical tourist traps and go off the beaten track on their custom hand built 125CC motorcycles. You can expect a thoroughly entertaining, epic adventure!

As a Chinese live overseas, I really like your videos. Believe it or not, they are actually a lot less bias than some Chinese videos. A lot of people criticize you for saying negative about China, but as a Chinese, I know they are mostly just facts. Some Chinese don't want to or just can't accept any negative information about China, because of their ego or so called "national pride". But it doesn't make China a better place. I like the way you point out the problem China has, you simply can't solve the problem if you just try to hide them.

One of the things I've come to value about living in the US, after having been here for a while is that this country does not hide its ugly truths. It makes it really easy for others to run the USA down, but few other places have the self confidence to show you even a fraction of how it really is. It also makes it a lot easier to address some problems, because you can at least admit/talk about them.

My sister in law was a chinese national. Lived there until her early 20s. She and her sister have since given up their Chinese citizenship for US citizenship. But they tell us about how there two types of products. One for the chinese market and the other for export. The export products are much better quality. They talked about a pair of sneakers their dad bought. Lasted about 2 weeks before the shoe literally started falling apart. Quite a fascinating country. Hope we can get over there and get a nice tool with her and her parents.

As a Chinese, I have to say that what Winston and C-milk said in the video is true. But It's not because the Chinese companies can't do proper quality control ( products exported overseas are generally good ), it is because the laws in China are so bad and so poorly enforced that they don't have any incentive whatsoever to improve their products' quality.

complaining about products is not the way to get them better quality. you use your money, if you keep buying poor quality products they will stay poor. only the consumer can change the quality of products and that is by not spending money on something thats going to break. if you buy a phone that keeps breaking dont buy from that company again.

As a young Mechanical Engineer in the early 1990s, I used to design air conditioning systems and installations. We used to love asia because they don't do preventative maintainence. We would install these massive, powerful air conditioning plants and five to ten years latter, they were totally shot and needed to be replaced. Most likely the plant was un-serviceable due to neglect, for years before replacement. Even large office buildings where the tenants were large multi-nationals, the plant would only last a few years, because the building owners did not want to spend money on maintenance and did not care about health, preserving the plant or the tenants. This is not just Chinacentric.

100% true. There are a couple other factors that encourage this kind of cheap, throwaway products: 1. Time pressure: Chinese customers demand a lot and want it all done yesterday. And businesses will capitulate because in Chinese culture, the customer is ALWAYS right, even when they're definitely wrong. They treat customers like gods, so they become spoiled and businesses have to bend over backwards for them. 2. Face: So you bought a cheap piece of crap that fell apart as soon as you started using it. What do you do now? Publicly shame the company? How DARE you sully their reputation!! That will get you sued/stalked/harassed/robbed. In Chinese culture, face is more important than ANYTHING except money.

Using a Huawei phone since two years, I'm actually very satisfied with the quality of it. I've also got a few friends using them as well with no complaints. If I'm honest the Samsung Galaxy s3 I had a few years ago had way worse quality. But I'm obviously living in the west.

The Morning Star I used an S3 for 3 years. by the end of its life, it could hardly charge because the port had fallen apart from years of use, and the motherboard malfunctioned so that the power button was perpetually being activated which made it impossible to turn on. I had to open it up and scrape the power button of the motherboard and use the volume down+home button combo after plugging it into the charger to boot it in safe mode to turn it on, and take the battery out to turn it off. To use the lock/power button in regular use, I had to use an app called ButtonSavior. the processor also went to shit or something because games just couldnt play smoothly at the end either. It was stuttering, lagging and crashing everything. It was not a phone built to last... Oh and did I mention the film on the back of the phone wore through, and the silver trim on the phone cracked in all four corners and wore down to black. s3 was tragic build quality.

The Chinese mindset on buying things might not be as bad as you think it is. I personally think about when i got into paintball and bough some cheap and semi-problematic paintball guns. My mindset at the time was these are cheap, reasonably decent handling guns and they worked well enough for what I wanted to do with it. Sure, I had to fix them a lot but I expected this since I did not pay a lot for them. In the end they got me into a sport I was interested in but eventually dropped for various reasons but none of which was was related to the fact I bought cheap paintball guns. As such... As long as the cost of ownership is in line with the expected use of the product vs cost.. I can't say I would fault anyone for buying one. The problem I think you need to address then is the cost of a Chinese product made for the domestic market really in line with the cost of a imported product, or even a Chinese product made for a western market? If there is a noticeable cost advantage for buying a homegrown domestic market product.. you really need to address that along with the disadvantages of if will break. Just because some people might not want something because its cheap crap does not mean everyone will feel the same way.. some people even in the west might find a advantage to buying a cheap disposable item... BTW.. if you looking for a possible subject to cover with a little bit of research.. I like to know what are they doing with with fish. I been told never to buy fish caught by Chinese or marked as being a product of China. One of the things I noticed from cooking it is.. they just don't seem to be refrigerating it right. Chinese fish for the american Market just does not seem to be as fresh even if everything should be refrigerated right away. Not sure how you cover this but knowing something more about our food would be interesting.

I remember as a child the notoriety of Japanese stuff as cheep and of low quality. Starting around I'd say '82 and particularly with Sony that image started to change. There is no point in making anything of quality in China since they don't enforce trademarks. Forget about copyright or patents; if they just enforced trademarks and cracked down on counterfeit products their entire manufacturing economy will turn around and likely dominate. As you pointed out; it just takes one company to be successful and others will copy them. Which means it would only take one brand with high quality standards like Apple and then every manufacturer will adopt higher quality standards. If I were the party leader there I would I would adapt trademarks and form a 20 year crackdown strategy. And bring china from 3rd/2nd world into to the 1st world.

It's unfair to call the iPhone a Chinese product. It's manufactured in China by Chinese, but all the backwork into the design, software, etc, are mostly done in America (some Korean and Japanese parts). Apple cares a lot about their international image, so they have a lot of oversight on the manufacturing process and wont allow poor products through QA. If Apple was a fully Chinese company, the iPhone would likely be very different.

Talking about Huawei, e.g. in Russia almost all telecommunications equipment for cell towers etc. is produced by Huawei. My first android phone was a Huawei U8860 back in 2012, I guess, it was rather good, but after updating the OS to android 4 it appeared, that it didn't have enough memory to operate the same way it was on android 2.3., it started lagging and losing battery much faster. Now I have P10 lite and I'm completely satisfied with it for now. Few years ago other chinese brands were introduced to our market such as Xiaomi and Meizu and they are becmoing quite popular due to affordable price, they still have some quality issues sometimes (mostly with batteries), but this is a problem with many modern mobile devices, not just with chinese brands.

All my Chinese made electronics work very well, like my Apple and Bose devices. From what I'm gathering from your video is that China manufacturing has 2 standards: one standard for the Western markets and another for the Chinese market. That's so self-destructive for a company! This video speaks truth regarding the QC situation in China. One huge example for me was whenever I bought clothes at Walmart in Shekou, Shenzhen, they would fall apart within like a month or two. Total garbage clothes. However, when I would spend the same amount of money on close in America Walmart that were still made in China, they would last a long time. The quality control is immensely different.

Alright, this explains the lack of confidence Chinese people have with their products and insistence on buying foreign goods. Australia actually ran out of milk powder for a week or two, three years ago because of a milk powder scandal, and then after they discovered that imported milk powder was being 'watered down' with local powder and they just lost all confidence. Even last year I had to console the staff at my local grocer's when my ex-girlfriend went to buy milk powder for her baby brother. These days, we still have a lot of people who go out to pharmacists and buy health food goods to be sold on the Chinese market, but it seems okay now. I haven't heard any complaints lately, even though you can easily spot the trend of the month.

It would not surprise me if, during the quality control process, the stuff that tests OK is shipped overseas, and the crap that's marginal or outright broken is sold to internal Chinese markets. They may make a basic attempt to repair the failing stuff, then sell it as well, but even that I doubt because it would cut into profits. Given the mindset of Chinese businessmen, I seriously doubt they'd want to simply dispose of defective product. The people of China tolerating trash being dumped on them is what enables this to happen. Of course, they have a grand 2200 year history of having to tolerate being repressed under various dynasties and totalitarian governments, or else they are jailed, killed, or "disappear," so having to tolerate crap sadly seems to be almost bred into them by now.

I don't understand why people always think "made in China" is cheap. I've worked for American manufacturers that make products there and the companies put those products through a lot of quality control before they release them into the US market or elsewhere. The only difference in the production process is the location. They would have used the exact same process in the states. However if you are referring to a brand that is cheap and a knock off then yeah...don't be surprise that it will break easily. Also products that are produced for certain markets (I.e China or India) then yeah...don't be surprised either.
