Yes! Definitely more of this kind of content. I like podcasts and topics that get discussed to the core and would love to see longer version of this lunch conversation.

Americans talking about "Europeans" as if we are not made up of many different peoples, with many countries having strong regional differences (like Germany, for example) in themselves, is the epitome of the "Ignorant American"-stereotype. Also, the perception that "European" women are "easy" (as in easy to get, wanting to have sex constantly, not caring about relationships etc.) was one of the reasons many American soldiers after WW2 behaved really badly. Not only in Germany, but also in France, treating the women like they saw them as whores. Not behaving as liberators, but lustfull and degrading conquerors. That this perception is still something that exists in the US - even if not that extreme, the groundwork for such thinking still seems to be there - is troubling, to say the least. And again ignorant, considering that while you might call Germany as a whole (to use it as an example again) to be more "sexually liberated", the whole "hook-up culture" here is not nearly as prominent as in the US. As the example you yourself gave that football-players from the US have a bad reputation, because at the core many do in fact think the same as the soldiers back then, in regards to the women and thus behave very disrespectfull towards them. Edit: That is of course not directed as an attack against you guys. It's just an educational and cultural problem of the US and isn't your fault at all. Americans coming here and seeing that it's different and carrying those impression back home is important to combat the ignorance.

I like the format. It's an interesting way to mix things up content wise. And it seems like a good way of keeping records of these conversations for yourself. But I agree with other commenters that the audio needs work. I'm used to listening to native speakers and had head phones on and I still had to go back a few times to understand what was said. (Which shows how interested I was.) Also I think it might make it easier to follow sometimes if there were a transition or something before a change of topic ?

More long format conversational vlogs would be awesome. In the past you made some with Bruno (still much missed but perhaps a special guest appearance in the future). Also there’s a fantastic discussion with Gerry on his American high school exchange year experience, and there’s the one where Speedy set you and Cody straight about everything as she’s totally marvellous. Spent a year working in Stuttgart and one memorable hilarious exchange was between two German colleagues, where the girl told the guy that his surname of “Kaltwasser” was ridiculous and no woman would marry him because of it !!! As an European woman I was flabbergasted (& amused) by the bluntness of another European woman.

I really like this more free form and unstructured conversations. You have had some in the past talking with Cody and Speedy, which were really good and insightful.

Oh I would love to see more content like this. Just with a little bit better audio. It was really interesting. That's why I love your channel. I moved to Germany, Bavaria, from Croatia very recently and find your videos both helpful, smart,informational and kind of relaxed-funny.

When you consider space (USA/Europe) and differences, you have to take into account for how long this has been going on in Europe. When we meet someone else from Europe we don't consider them european but natives of their country. Europe is just a continent and what makes Europe european is the diversity of nations. We just drive a couple hours and have no idea whats going on, basically. This is very different in the US. Especially if you think about that most immigrants in the US came from Europe and actually mixed together. Hence the term melting pot. This mixing together only happens in a very marginal way here. The cultural differences are huge. You have trouble learning German when German is actually related to English. Now imagine 3 huge language families that have very little in common (germanic/romance/slavic). These language families learn very quickly and understand each other very well within their own bubble but to jump from one bubble to the next is a dedicated step to take. For centuries only diplomats and privileged students, like Goethe and the boiz, learned diplomatic languages like french. There was even a time when german officials from two different regions, for the sake of understanding each other, spoke in French together. The common folk stayed german, french, italian and so on. They barely even met outsiders. Then you can even consider regional effects of mountains, the Mediterranean Sea, Scandinavia, the Balkan. People are so different. Reminds me of a talk I had with my brother, who thinks everyone on earth should talk the same language (and only one language) to be more efficiant and I strongly disagreed. You might have already recognized that some thoughts are easier to think in German and some are easier to think in English. This applies to every language and culture. It is the individuality that brings up great minds and that's probably what made the USA the country it is. In the USA when people ask where are you from, people respond with "I'm 1/4th Haitian, 1/8th irish and 1/16th italian and what not." You barely see that in Europe. People look at you and know where you are from. (sorry for that long comment, bad habit)

Hey Nalf! Nice Video. It would be cool if you talk somebody or visit the west Part of germany. Like Dortmund or Essen. Because i think its a big diffrent to the south like schwäbisch hall.

Outch. Didn't know about the bad reputation. Now I understand why Nalf still is a bachelor... (I always thought are the girls in Schwäbisch Hall blind?!?!) maybe you should spend some free time in Stuttgart? From a sociological POV: Such a reputation is more persistent in smaller communities like Schwäb.Hall than in bigger cities as social closure is stronger in towns than cities. Plus Stuttgart e.g. has seen more interaction with individuals from the US, thus tends to judge them more on individual level than on cultural background. BUT there's one town that's completely exceptional: Ramstein. As this base was/is used as a transition base after deployments to war zones a lot of PTSD related incidents happened there...thus the overall reputation there seems to me strained in a long term way...

I can understand the struggle with swabian culture 😂 I moved from a small town in the middle of nowhere in bavaria to Stuttgart in 2015 and it was a challenge to adapt to the culture. The first few years I felt like a foreigner and I was often called a foreigner by swabians 🤷‍♀️ but ever since I lost my strong bavarian accent, they don't really mind anymore. More so they are surprised when I tell them that I'm from bavaria. But well 🤷‍♀️ bavarians are foreigners everywhere.. Even in our own Bundesland 😂 But I like Baden-Württemberg a lot and decided to stay here 😉😁

It was very interesting to me and would like to see more content like that! ;)

I vote for podcast. I'm listening to cultural podcasts but hard to find them. Also, could be because I speak English fluently but I could hear everything that was said.

I didn't understand 50% of the conversation. The sound was terrible! Sorry.

I'd be very interested to see more videos in this format. But if you want to do it regularly, you'll have to improve audio quality somehow, as others have mentioned.

Provided they all agree to having their private thoughts broadcast online, by all means do continue this format. But don't treat these vids as of they were Hollywood action movies, don't edit and cut conversations down into a few leftovers which you think are soundbites we're interested in. We do have an attention span and a soft spot for all of you guys. And yeah, I can see why people who don't happen to be highly immersed within spoken English struggle with the audio, you might want to look into that.

Very, very good video start: super music (who did it?), she shot is also top notch...makes my flesh crawl! Do you mentioned that picture at the wall: it's a scene from a german (british) new years eve comedy classic...every year (since the sixtys) it is shown in tv at new years eve! 😉It's name is "Dinner for one"!

...when the intro is better than the content... actually I take that back, the intro is a metaphor for the frustration of coming up with content. It's a process, keep up the good work, Nalf!

Okay, let's stop and think about this for a moment... I think the fact European women are not as prudish as their American counterparts is a huge factor in the misconception of them. Honestly, I think a woman is a woman, no matter where she is from... some just let their freak flag fly higher than others.

I think the difference is in the dating culture. In america, everything seems to be labeled, dates are very 'formal', creating high expectations for success; ironically ruining a lot of potential chemistry. For europeans, we don't really formally 'date' in the same way, we more often 'hang out', and something eventually happens naturally. The whole 'friend zone' obsession is not really a thing here. A lot of couples started out as friends, it is just not a guarantee anything will happen just because you are friends. And maybe there is a little less shame about sleeping casually with others. However, no woman will like being put down, or taken advantage of.

There is this "dinner for one" sign over your heads .😂😂😂 Good exchange between you guys.

In order to be attractive for German women it doesn't suffice to be physically fit, you need to be able to carry a conversation, be reliable, honest, and have a sense of humor .... be presentable, which includes being able to adopt European / German table manners and choose your attire according to the situation you are going to be in (hint: it's better to be over- than to be underdressed). Most important: Try to find out what the woman is interested in and *do not talk* about boy stuff all the time (except when asked). If you want a wife who is putting up with just being at home cooking & taking care of the kids .... you better search for her in America

You don't seem to understand that you cannot tell what a woman looks for simply by the nation she lives in. You cannot tell by her haircolour, her way to dress, her education or her job. Stereotypes suck.

All of the points on his list would be things that I - happily married and old enough to be the "boys' " mother - did look for and would still look for in a male partner. No matter how long I would plan the relationship to last. I remember my mother warning me about GI's. She was young after WW2 and certainly will have had her experiences with the American (and Russian) forces. So the bad reputation, as somebody stated earlier, is a thing that has a long history. And it isn't made better by the reports that spill over from the US how women are treated and viewed there. @NALF: I love your videos, have started to watch just a couple of days ago. Conversations and more viewpoints would be great but please check sound quality and "speaker" ability. Your friend on the left is mumbling to much, it's a shame because his opinions just get lost.

Here is my list: 1) It took me nearly half of an hour to manage holding the pen like you did. 2) Followed by another half hour of researching what the "usual" way is and if that is a cultural difference. 3) And 10 seconds to realize how bored i was, that it does not matter at all and that i wasted 1 hour of lifetime to this topic. About your question on the end: Yes. For me as a german it is quite interesting how other cultures look at us, because "if you are in the house, you can only see to the outside". (Hope you know what i mean) (And sorry, my english is quite bad.)

Loved it, but sometimes it is hard to understand what you guys are saying.

Very true. I’m from the USA and I often have difficulty hearing/understanding what’s being said in this kind of format. It’s a shame because it never fails to be at what promises to be the most interesting bits of the conversation.

Loved the longer conversations. I guess a podcast might be a nice idea because you could improve the audio quality just by having everybody next to their own mic etc.

Add some beer and a late night snack and it will take off! It's always interesting to hear people talk and especially when it's about situations in life and perspectives. NOTE: The picture on the wall, any information about that? Anyone...

I find it interesting how we say "Americans" and Americans say "European" allthough we all are a mix of different societies. Someone from France is different from someone from Germany just like someone from Texas is different from someone from Washington state. I mean, we should be aware of the cultural and geografical differences in all countrys and stop generalising people.

Really like the new guy, it refreshes the show.

Great video. I lived in the Frankfurt area in the mid-80's/90's. It was a diverse landscape of women from all over the world (Frankfurt business & banking) and I got to experience women from many nations. What I really enjoyed about European women was, for the most part, not all the games. If a woman liked you, you knew it. If they didn't like you, you knew that too. Many times German women would come up to you and start a conversation if they wanted to get to know you. If you were in a relationship, they were very faithful and would do anything for you. It was difficult to deal with American women coming back to the US and all the games.

about reputation: these kind of reputation about americans is also found around air bases like Spangdahlem Air Base. I had a chance to get a little insight during my time at the german army (Bundeswehr). If you feel homesick, visit one. It feels kinda like the US...

Fun Fact: Did you notice the painting on the wall? That's from a sketch called "Dinner for one" which plays on EVERY channel on New Years eve. It's a tradition. I've even been to New Years parties with this sketch as their theme. It ends with sentence "The same procedure as last year, Miss Sophie?" "The same procedure as every year, James!".

I think Miss Sophie and James in the background had a better audio. It was quite terrible to understand. The mic ist to far away or has a very low quality. But i would like to get more of these discussions.
