Actually, the driver's license authority can also forbid you to use a bicycle if you had been driving drunk and there is evidence that you might generally be an unsafe driver also when using a bicycle. It isn't done in every case, but it can happen, especially when you where caught with a very high concentration of blood alcohol that is a hint at regular alcoholism and were not driving drunk for the first time.

Funny thing is: you are allowed to drink alcohol while driving, you are just not allowed to be over the legal limit. The „Du“ thing with officials like police is really about context. If they realize that you are struggling with the language they will probably just let it slip or tell you to use „Sie“. Or, most likely, switch to English altogether.

i've met police officers a few times and they are respectful, calm and helpful. obviously there are exceptions but most of em really are. if you have a friendly chat with them, maybe asking for directions and you use the informal way they won't even notice nor care. but if you are some drunk asshole showing them the finger and insulting them then i'm sure they will teach you an expensive lesson. beware. people in germany care a lot about politeness. you don't need to fake a smile, but be respectful :)

Just asked my boyfriend (police officer), yes, you can be fined for saying "Du", he wasn't sure if it is really such a steep fine though, he has never had to resort to this. He will only say something like: listen, we're not buddies, so please use the proper way to address me. ALSO he would never do this with a foreigner, knowing that it is hard enough to get everything straight in a language that isn't yours, and he would only point it out if they are disrespectful. So to piss off a police officer you definitely need more than calling him "Du". It's basically disrespect that gets you in trouble, not so much the confusion of personal pronouns.

In German law it's often about the intention of the action. So in case that you are speaking to a police officer and you say "Du" by accident or you are not a native speaker, there would be no problem. However, if you are using the informal address as an intentional act of disrespect (repeatedly and in a disrespectful tone), it would be a crime. An empty tank on the highway can be expensive If you are left without fuel on the highway, you have to expect a fine and points in the Flensburger Verkehrssünderkartei. Reason is that according to StVO the holding on the highway is prohibited because of lack of gasoline. It is an avoidable traffic obstruction. The fine for staying on the highway is at least 30 euros. In the maximum case, you pay 70 euros. The amount of the penalty is specified in the StVG. For this reason, it is your duty to inform yourself about the capacity of your fuel tank before you drive. Afterwards you can estimate, whether the filling quantity is sufficient for the planned journey. The classic fuel gauge and the on-board computer, which is installed in all modern vehicles, help you with this. However, the reliability leaves something to be desired, especially in older vehicles sometimes. Here is a lack of fuel sometimes even before, if the ad is not yet in the red area.

These things are quite funny and famous. And most of them are complete bollocks. Or results of some weird court rulings long forgotten, ignored or changed. Which you can find everywhere, including Germany, if you dig deep enough into some ancient paper. Stephen Fry did a BBC series once where he travveled all US states. And they had the idea of intentionally breaking one of these weird laws in every state. And when they checked for options, they encountered that they were mostly made up. Absolutely nobody cares if you wear a top hat during weddings in Albama....

A couple weeks back we had a jerk come up to us while working and he would start taking pics of me while threatning to report us, but he wasnt well informed and by luck we used the tools that are allowed at this hour. For having your relatives` ashes at home there is a go around on the rise where people bring their urns to holland and use them as fertilizer for young trees. Then a couple months later you get a notice and they will ship you the tree and voila you kinda have your loved ones`s ashes at home - just gotta take care of that tree - wonderful thing imo.

    - American sirens sound like they are taken straight from a little child's toy with all the funky weird noises. German sirens sound like.. sirens. - In Germany, it's illegal to ride your horse while drunk (if you do, you will lose your car driving license!) - It's illegal to intentionally run out of fuel on the autobahn. You have to make sure your car is roadworthy and can do the trip. - I think flipping people off is the same as insulting people. Giving someone the finger supposedly might cost between 600-4000€. To compare, calling someone a slut can cost you about 2000€. But this always depends on the context and most people won't sue you. - There is no law specifically for addressing police officers. But intentionally using the impolite "Du" can be considered to be an insult. And there have been cases where these got expensive. - I think in Germany we have a white-list for baby names. This prevents people from giving their children touchy names (Adolf) or weird shit that you get bullied for. But I think you can always appeal a decision or sue your way to your name. There are big differences in Europe how countries handle names, some countries just have blacklists. I think this is a great system as it prevents people from getting names like "Hope", "Destiny" which Germans (and my that I mean myself) would consider to be terribly ill-suited choices. Love you dude & take care!

On a work trip to San Francisco in 2012, came across a group of about several hundred naked protesters on the junction of Market St/Powell St. It seems there’s a local law which allowed public full nudity in SF as long as when sitting down in a public place (such as park benches) you cover your posterior. A conservative politician named Wiener (ironically) was trying to rescind this unique (could only happen in SF) law, hence the protestors. Also lived and worked in Singapore for several years and they have a few unusual laws. Chewing gum for the most part is banned unless it has medicinal benefits such as nicotine gum for people trying to cease smoking (also only sold in pharmacies). Not flushing after using a public toilet could lead to a hefty fine. The pungent Durian fruit is banned on public transport. Locals and expats call Singapore a “fine” city as there are lots ways to be fined. My friend/colleague has a sister who’s a police officer in the vice squad, and I was both fascinated and thoroughly entertained hearing about the seedy underbelly of squeaky clean Singapore.

The point is, it's not forbidden to play music during nighttime as long as you don't overdo it (i. e. get too loud). There are two thresholds that must be taken into account: 19:00 (Abendruhe) and 22:00 h (Nachtruhe). While the former proscribes disposing of e. g. glass or other materials at public recycling containers (again exception: Unless they are placed in a commercial area of the city so no neighbors are affected) or perform loud work (like lawn mowing), the latter Jeans that you have to keep it QUIET. So if you want to play an instrument at nighttime, you need to make sure that nobody gets disturbed. Things return to normal at 07:00 h. And as far as the "noon silence" is concerned, that's nonsense. There are no federal regulations on that (exception: That may be imposed on the city level, but there must be a valid reason like it being a health resort or the likes). So yes, there are restrictions, but as long as you apply common sense with what you are doing and how you do it, no problem at all.

About 80% of the people, mostly students, had alcohol levels ABOVE the limit. Nothing has changed since then, because there is no reason to do something about it. The roads are safe.
