What is Your Mind Full of? Mindfulness in Prophetic Practice with President Hamza Yusuf
This lecture will look at the current crisis of overstimulation, TikTok, Snapchat, Netflix, WhatsApp, and myriad other distractions. Advertisers speak of “mindshare,” which according to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary denotes “a controlling or predominant hold of one’s attention that is gained especially by marketing ploys”-in other words, what share of your mind can they occupy? Advertisement means to divert your attention to something the ad campaign (a military term) wants you to be mindful of. Entertainment, according to the dictionary, means “agreeable occupation of the mind, diversion, amusement.” Who or what is occupying your mind? Our Prophet s occupied his own mind with remembrance of God. He said, “Whoever makes his concerns (what he or she is mindful of) one concern (God), God will take care of all his other concerns.” One of the Arabic words for mindfulness is muhtamm, which means “what one is concerned with.”

Shaykh Hamza's Poem: The sun solemnly stated, "how can my light compare to his?" And the moon laughed, "be like me: content to reveal another's light! " The north star declared, "what guidance can I provide next to his?" And all the stars exclaimed, "be like us, who revolve around you and show no envy." The sea shouted, "what secrets can I contain when compared to his wonders?" The clouds pleaded, "be like us: exalted in the sky because we humbly draw our water from another, and pour forth in gratitude and service." The rose ruefully remarked, "what beauty do I have next to his?" The mirror said "be like me, who can only reflect another's beauty." Reason exclaimed: "what wisdom can I reveal next to his revelation?" The tongue replied: "be still, and let me quote him." Gold complained "what worth do I have next to his?" Copper cried: "What ingratitude! Your purity was his from the start. Be happy to be compared to him!" The dog barked "he mentioned me", The cat meowed "he petted me", The donkey brayed "he rode on me", The horse neighed "he called me an ocean", The camel grunted " I took him to safety ", The frog croaked "I was his favourite", The spider stood tall on eight legs and said "I protected him once", The cloud boasted "I shaded him" The tree declared "he called me and I bowed to him" The palm trunk said "well, he hugged me", The date gloated "I was sweet for him", Milk exalted "I nourished him", Water crowed "I quenched his thirst", The Kaaba shouted "he circled me", The Yemeni corner cried "he touched me", The black stone laughed and said, "he kissed me", The pebbles yelled "we praised God in his palm", The mountains of Mecca called out "he loved us", Medina demurely whispered, "he chose me!" And humanity cried " Nafsi! Nafsi! Me! Me!", And God said "be like Ahmadص!" And Ahmad ص said "Ummati! Ummati! My community! My community!", And God replied, "We will grant you until you are content!"

Dearest Shaikh Hamza, I do not know if you will ever read this, but I felt compelled to leave a note of gratitude to you for the seemingly endless generosity you display to this ummah whether or not we are deserving of your brilliance. The words you have imparted here are treasured gifts which not certainly reflect the beauty of the subject being spoken of, but as well as the one speaking. Only someone gifted with such depth of emotion and sincere love for the Beloved ﷺ-not mere lip service like the deluded majority of us-could have put these words together as delicately and beautifully as pearls on a thread of silk. May Allah ﷻ elevate you continuously. May He overwhelm you with an abundance of blessings and shower you with His mercy. And may He count you among His closest "friends." Ameen! جزاكم اللّٰه خيراً حفظكم ﷲ

This has to be one of the most needed talks for today. We are entertaining ourselves to death in today's day and age.

  • @TheBlurayzer
    @TheBlurayzer7 ай бұрын

Two of my favorite Quotes from the first half of this lecture: “Die before you die” موتوا قبل ان تموتوا in other words come to attention before you are brought to attention. Death permeates the Quran. There’s not a page that doesn’t have the perfume of death scented on it. This lecture is very much appreciated. I always try to make notes so if anyone is interested this is what I've got so far: What is your mind full of? Who’s occupying your mind?
Now what you give your attention to will determine your reality. What God is asking us is to give our attention to God.
What is Attention in Arabic? In English it has a lot of really interesting meanings: one of them is courtesy.
like you say he was very attentive to me. Attention is what a lover gives to their beloved. Attention is also a word for devotion. So your attention is your devotion. It’s what you’re attending to. It’s what you’re giving your time to.
So in Arabic, one of the words for it is „ihtimaam“.
It’s what you’re concerned with. It’s your „Hamm“ it’s what preoccupies your mind. It’s what your mind is full of.
So the Prophet (sav.) said: „Whoever makes his concerns - in other words, gives his attention to one thing - Allah will take care of all of his other concerns.
What’s that? The Akhira. So we’re living in a time where people’s concerns are completely fragmented. And so there’s all this mental derangement because people are so distracted. Now Imam Ali r.a. said and it’s often attributed to the prophet (sav.) „If they die they come to attention“.
The prophet (sav.) said in one iteration. “Die before you die” موتوا قبل ان تموتوا in other words come to attention before you are brought to attention. […] In other words, wake up now. And this is what mindfulness is really about, it’s dhikr, […] it’s to be awake, to be aware. You’re attentive you’re aware, your mind is present.
So already by the 1880s Niche noted: One thinks with one’s watch in one’s hand he complained. Even as one eats one's midday meal while reading the latest news of the stock market this is a distraction. Everything is done with the clock. One of the most interesting things about time - and one of my favorite authors - Lewis Mumford said: that when the modern mindset came to dominate- this is what he wrote: eternity seized gradually to serve as the measure and focus of Human actions. In its place came the dictatorship of the clock. Isn’t that interesting? People used to think about eternity their lives were actually determined by their understanding of eternity and one of the most common things about pre-modern people is they mention death a lot. One of the most notable qualities of modern people and post-modern people is they never talk about death. Why did the pre-modern people talk about death? When I was in the throne room of the former queen Elizabeth and now the throne room of King Charles - I was taken there by Baroness Uddin she was Muslim in the House of Lords - so they took me into the throne room I was getting a tour of the parliament. So they have this throne room and there was this massive clock given by the French king to the British monarch that had the Grim Reaper on top of it. In other words, the angel of death was on top of it with his seif that takes the souls. In all of the premodern sundials, it will say things like carpe diem. Many Latin phrases things like „in one of these hours you’ll be seized.“ People saw time as a reminder of their finitude. As the reminder that they were finite beings in temporality. Modern people think they’re going to live forever. They don’t think about death. One of the main reasons for this desire for distractibility is because it preoccupies people from thinking about what is inevitable. That they will die. The Prophet (sav.) said: „Do much remembrance of the destroyer of the lights/pleasures: death.“ Not in a morbid sense this is being onto death.
This is embracing our mortality - being aware of it.

Murabit al-Hajj every night did death meditation. He would recite poems about death.

Sheikh Ibn al-Habib in his Dīwān: „be prepared for death, it’s coming“.
And they used to sing this on a regular basis. To think about death. The prophet (sav.) was completely aware of the presence of death. Death permeates the Quran. There’s not a page that doesn’t have the perfume of death scented on it. And this is not morbidity this is not some kind of morbid or morbidness […], it’s actually to make you aware of the preciousness of the time that you been given. This is the preciousness of life itself. It’s a great gift of Allah (swt.) And we waste it away with all of this insignificant concern.

May be Muslim countries are supporting this noble endeavor. However, countries like Kuwait, Qatar and S.A. can do much more for Zaytuna College. Be a fund raiser in your community wherever you live. Allah SWT will bless you with His mercy.

This poem was written by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Juzay al-Kalbi al-Gharnathi (r.a.), who was martyred in the Battle of Tarifa, also known as the Battle of Rio Salado, defending the lands of the Muslims against the invading Christians. “I desired to praise the Chosen One and was hindered By my own inability to grasp the extent of his glory. How can one such as I measure an ocean, when the ocean is vast? And how can one such as I count the stones and the stars? If all of my limbs were to become tongues, even then - Even then I could not begin to praise him as I desired. And if all of creation gathered together in an attempt To praise him, even then they would stint in his due. I have altogether ceased trying - awestruck, clinging to courtesy, Tempered by timidity, glorifying his most exalted rank. Indeed, sometimes silence holds within it the essence of eloquence, And often speech merely fodder for the faultfinder

Thanks for this another educational video shaykh! I have a question, why did zaytuna changed so much, in its early time they observe complete Shariah rulings in classrooms and places which is segregation between men and women, why it is being finished?.. Shaikh hamza and this institution is inspiration for many, so if you will start endorsing things agaist Shariah then people will be misguided and misguide others using this college name... I just want to say that, if zaytuna call itself muslim college then please act like one!

Salam Well there is a difference of opinion among the scholars. You can read both opinions online. As a guideline for everyday Muslims: If someone wants to celebrate it then they must make sure not to do any hidden or obvious shirk. If one is not celebrating it, then they shouldn't call others Kafirs or Murtads for celebrating it. PS: This whole video was to celebrate Mawlid.

Perhaps rephrase the question- should we celebrate and honor the gift Allah SWA gave to all His creation? The answer will then be simple!

Moulid is a bida'h. These kinds of bida'h, grave worship, thavassul were those things which destroyed our Ummah in the past. We are fighting against it with Towheed now this Ummah is changing.

Cleberiting birthdays have never been a Muslim tradition. People do it because the non-believers do it. The prophet ﷺ neither his companions have celebrated his birthday. That’s one thing I disagree on with Sheik Hamza.

Try to use the alternative meaning of the word “celebrate” which is “honoring”, the Ummah is honoring the greatest gift from Allah SWA to all of His creation! This is not a simple birthday, it is a coming of Mercy. We celebrate everyday with salawaat! 5 times in each Salat! It is not like the non Muslims birthday celebrations! Nor is it like the hypocrisy of Muslims who will celebrate their child’s first birthday but critics of the Mawlid!!!! Dah????

@@Zenigma217 Those are valid ways of looking at this issue. But Muslims are generally reluctant to adopt new things, which is good in general. Plus, certain Mawlid practices, especially from the sub-continent cultures, have obvious shirk elements so that's a problem too.

For me, it shows the depth of connection and meaning in the ideas being presented. It's like a prism offering multiple dimensions and reflections of a single idea or thought. How ideas are connected or related, thats the brilliance of it that I think people appreciate. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Peace.
