Learning To Be Human: Umar Faruq Abd-Allah & Hamza Yusuf (Part II)

A conversation on our primordial nature with Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah, the American Muslim theologian and scholar, and Hamza Yusuf, president of Zaytuna College and editor-in-chief of Renovatio.
Our prophetic tradition teaches that every child is born with a natural disposition, or fitra. The great minds of all religious traditions grounded their outlook about human beings in this universal reality. Today, however, this profound first principle has been lost, and our distinctiveness as human beings is challenged by contemporary fields, from biology to psychology to social sciences and beyond. How do we then know the truth of our shared natural disposition? In other words, how do we learn to be human?

1:14:14 *_"God is Beautiful, and He loves beauty"_* (Prophetic saying). 'Beauty is the splendor of truth. And that means: God doesn't love ugliness, and ugliness is the mark of falsehood. Ugliness means you've gone astray.' '...If you love God, you become beautiful; you become internally beautiful. That's the universal routing. And then what you produce is graceful and beautiful-even the way you walk, even the way you talk, even the words you use. Because you want to use beautiful words; you want to know what your words mean. This is very important: to get back this _beauty in everything._ And that makes us human.'

"Fitrah" is an Arabic word that carries significant cultural and religious connotations, primarily within the context of Islam. It refers to the innate, natural disposition or primordial nature of a human being. In Islamic belief, every person is born with an inherent sense of monotheism and an inclination towards recognizing the oneness of God (Allah). The concept of fitrah suggests that, by nature, humans have an inherent awareness of God's existence and a predisposition to seek a connection with the divine. It is often used to explain why many people, regardless of their upbringing or background, may have an inclination towards spirituality or a belief in a higher power. Fitrah is also associated with the idea that human beings are inherently good and pure at birth but may be influenced or corrupted by external factors over time. In this sense, it serves as a reminder of the importance of returning to one's natural, pure state by embracing faith and righteousness. Overall, fitrah is a fundamental concept in Islamic theology, emphasizing the innate spiritual nature of humans and their predisposition to recognize and seek God. It plays a role in discussions about the human condition, morality, and the path to spiritual enlightenment within Islam.

It's incredible how similar Muslims are to Christians. This talk could have been had by right wing western Christians and all you need to change are the names of the speakers, the content is identical.

Everything was beautiful.. but that laugh was not so nice.. He's an old scholar who spent so much of his time in the worship of God.. and you could see that he became uncomfortable and the same with sheikh Hamza Yusuf.. May Allah forgive those who laughed and guide their heart 🤲
