My wife and I spent much of the year 2000 traveling out of the country. Our home was rented out, so we still had that as our "permanent" address, but all our correspondence, especially our bills went to our accountant's office. We checked in regularly to see what was there. A solicitor works just as well, but we found an accountant better for paying bills, as auto-pay wasn't common back then. Love your channel, we found you through your interview with Narrowboat Girl.

My boat insurer covers the contents including laptop and camcorder, though I had to specify anything over a certain amount as a named item.

Hi, I've recently retired and am thinking of getting a norrowboat.Your videos are a great help :) I'd just like to comment on something you said about online shopping. I was a delivery driver for some years and have delivered shopping to several marinas (Yelvertoft, Sawley, Debdale and Whilton). I've also made deliveries to canalside pub car parks for constant cruisers. It really isn't a problem, just be very specific about where you are moored and there shouldn't be a problem. I am a continious cruiser so my videos generally come from the perspective of some one not in a marina. it is a problem for many delevery services aside from food delivery though its not to your door like if you had an adress. I must say thank you for being accomidating when you did this!

Awesome video. - From my view, I would say a PO Box is the a very good option as you can write the box number as a "flat" number, so in respect of all the black & white systems and box ticking, you get a physical address. Many people also require a landline number, you can get one through Skype or through a website, which either gives you a regional number or a London (020) style number and you can have that directed to your mobile or second mobile, but the caller will not see the directed service, which is fine because it works out well, as they are calling a landline at landline cost and it comes to your "cordless phone" - beauty of it getting it through Skype is, if you are travelling abroad, you just log on to WiFi open Skype and you will still get that phone coming through, which is a lot better as if it comes to your mobile you end up paying a LOT of money. Probably repeating myself here, but it is a good idea to have one address, especially with driving licence and insurance as anything out of black and white and they get bemused. Which takes too long to explain basics to them. Love all your videos. - Warm regards. D^P

I don´t know if it has changed since I lived in the UK ( lived in Canada and now Austria and am British) but it used to be that you had to have the address you live at on your drivers licence and if you move you have to change it to the new adress. Mind, I needed to get my renewed as it is a photo one and it had expired as I lived in Canada but I needed it for Austria so when I moved from Canada last year and stayed with a friend in Scotland for a couple of weeks before moving to Austria I just used that address and have had no issues. Great video.

I have my parents address on mine I think as long as you can get the things they post you they don't mind, I have to renew mine actually so I can maybe update this!

There is also mail boxes etc ... But I've not used them before. They accept parcels too which is always handy. And for boaters travelling further there are s couple of services that will scan your post for you too.

hi i am going though a family dispute i,ve lived in my car for 7 moths and gone to hotel's etc and friends ect and i got a cheap little camper off ebay then i lived in that for a while then i had a flat in the lake district for 2 yrs but i still had my mail going to the family house but all i transferred bank statments so just transfer what you need . you can tax your car by using your log book and do it over the phone so you dont need to keep paper work it is all electronic

You can also have an office service which provide small businesses various services including a physical address which can be used for receiving mail. There are all kinds of those around UK oft times at the places which allow you to pack and ship parcels I have noticed. What about when the boat is in one spot, where one pays a small fee. Don't the services provide you with an actual address in such instances? This seems advisable.

I work for the NHS and as far as I am aware, GPs have catchment areas and if you live outside their particular catchment area, you can't register with them as a permanent patient. Just thought i'd mention that :-)

At a Marina with communal postbox, had a right job to get car insurance :( and just worked out those amazon box things at supermarkets bit safer for parcels

Great point - however some items don't qualify to be delivered this way - I don't know why!! I ordered a casio watch and a book, both of which arrived at a local newsagent without any problems. Then I ordered some green toilet chemical stuff recently when I was in Blackburn and they were like nope!

I’ve lived in any number of different places, (including periods Overseas) but I’ve had the same Post Office Box for over 40 Years. Although the actual location of that Post Office Box has changed several times over the Decades, the actual Address of the Post Box (Post Office Box 330) never has. At present I live 25 Kilometres from My Post Office Box, but the Postal Service eMail Me every time Mail is delivered into My Post Office Box. And because that particular Post Office Annexe is also a Parcel Delivery Centre, they have absolutely no problem accepting Parcels on My behalf.

if you can use your boat as , an address , then the government assess your house for efficancy , and because you have panels, you should be able to get some money

A couple of other suggestions that might suit some people. Royal Mail offer a fabulous Post Restante service. You can give the address of any UK post office and collect an item of post from there. Ideal for an occasional item. It's a free service too. www.postoffice.co.uk/mail/poste-restante There are also post forwarding services. They will open, scan and email you all post that arrives. You can then have the hard copy forwarded via Post Restante if you need it. This is obviously a paid for service but it has the advantage of giving you a permanent genuine geographic address rather than a POBox. One example is www.boatmail.co.uk but there are others. Hope that helps.

Here in the state there are commercial storefronts that rent mailboxes that are right in the store. I would imagine there should be something similar there in the UK if not Business opportunity for someone in the UK I used on for four years and simply gave as my address as (example) 479 example road apt 642 the 642 was the mailbox number I found it was far less questions by doing it that way.instead of commercial mailboxes 2848 brook ins avenue Manchester, New Hampshire box 492 . That type of address always was questioned whereas the former was not.

I kept my house on because of this problem and rent it out. It is a huge problem with out a fixed address u can't get loans or they won't let u moor at marinas.

What madness!

The DVLA says " You can be fined up to £1,000 if you don’t tell DVLA when your address changes." (for licence & log book. I suppose they need somewhere to send the fines. Aren't you ever asked to provide a utility bill to prove your address? I booked an apartment for a holiday and even they asked for proof of address. Finally, if you pay to stay at a marina surely they allow you to use the marina address.

if you stay at a marina then you can use that address, I have never updated my address the dvla, even when i lived in house, what can i say I'm a rebel. i can still get post that is sent to the address on my licence, as its my parents house. i use proof of address for my parents only if they don't accept i live on a boat. and for people who cant do that i assume its very hard , using a po box or work address....

Another problem I've encountered is when you lose your bank card. Definitely don't do that unless you are boating/moored near the address you gave. I was 175 miles away when I lost mine 8^0

I had to work my way through 4 different customer service people before the bank manager relented, had to change my branch address to that one and was told that it was a complete one off only because I had been with the bank for a long time and had a decent enough credit rating.

It's illegal not to have the correct address on your driver's licence and you could be liable for a fine if found out. If you can still collect mail from that address you'd probably get away with it but if you couldn't, you could get into hot water.

Having friends who are cruisers here in the states, that is they live in a sail boat and cruise the world, they have actually had to register themselves as a business due to the fact their banks couldn't handle the fact that they were being asked to pay out money to places all around the world... Funny thing there is no problem with businesses having PO boxes or drop boxes at the post office, but huge problems for the individual. As a soon to retire person I want to become a "cruiser", but yes without a physical address on land I can't get my retirement checks....

I have heard on one or 2 blogs that the canal and river officals can take gps reading to plot how long a canal boat stays at locations ,Do you know if that is really true ?? if so is it possible to get a official print-out of those records ?? for say maybe establishing a record of residence for anyone interested , post office could list location on the post office box registeration and if your boat name is at that gps location they deliver the mail if not it goes to your post office box , problem Solved ,, that was easy !! oh wait maybe I forgot the that's not my department work effort guidelines

they have people who cycle around taking number plates and you can only stay for two weeks normaly(see my video about the rules of mooring for more information)

I know of at least one place in London which is technically a PO Box but acts like a normal Street address. the only "problem" there is that PO addresses cost money.

I really can't believe that this is still 'an issue' these days. It would not be a monumental task to setup some manner of a "Mobile Person Address" system for packages and the like by using a PIN of some kind. Log in online and update your 'current location' as needed as you move about, and stuff gets routed along to a suitable pickup location. Someone sending you something then just has to address it to "Person at MPA-[pin]" and stuff gets shipped like any other mail.

An even better solution is already out there - what3words! It's already given everywhere in the world a 3 word address, and its free :) (yes, I work for them, but I'm also a boater, and there's no ads/wierd signups or anything either)

I told my bank that I was moving onto a boat and wouldn't have a fixed address and they didn't have a problem with it. Everything is done electronically. Btw, I understood that tax authorities etc won't accept a PO Box as an address. Do you have different information?

Over here we can have a post office box (as an address) at the post office. You can live under a bridge,In a camp ground,in a semi truck,tent,,Any where.I know England is a lot different.Thanks for answering.

Some marinas don't like accepting post, as it implies liveaboard people, which attracts local councils' greedy eyes re council tax, and the marinas just don't want the hassle, which I can appreciate.

Even though I live in a house, all my "letters and correspondence" has been arranged to come through my e mail or mobile phone. If I was on a boat, I would just collect my parcels at the post office. I do not vote, so that is not a problem. I think there is always a way around the "post problem".

To be honest I would not feel like I have contributed to change because there are too many variables. I do not have much faith when I see basic decisions not met efficiently. When increasing amount of individuals and families have to rely on food banks just to survive, there is a big problem that not been addressed. Most people that vote do not fully understand the decision they are making and the possible consequences. I found that I was a happier person by not watching the news or keeping up with politics!! I really like you're videos by the way. I have learnt a lot from you :-)

For bank accounts they actually do check the electoral register these days under the new money laundering schemes, which is ridiculous considering most of the High Street Banks have, over the years, had judgements against them for fraud etc etc ( Think LIBOR scandal, fixing prices in the markets etc). I registered at a friends address on the electoral register and did not have to pay council tax as I was not living there....and this seems to be causing confusion ...as they are too separate entities. Electoral register allows a vote ( and Institutions can check this register)...and council tax requires you to actually live there in order to have to pay it. I have , in the past, done a ton of shopping online and had things delivered to Argos ( Ebay sales, Amazon will deliver certain items to a local Post delivery centre, where you collect from the Enquiry office.UPS have collection points ( some Garages and shops etc) or MailBox companies will accept mail for you ( at a hefty price tho').....and there is always a work around in most cases.

How would it be worked out? By definition you'll be moving between constituencies so which will you vote in? And you'll be voting for a local MP to represent your interests but rejecting that representation by changing local MP every couple of weeks. Government likes people to stay in the same place so that can count them, measure their property and tax them appropriately for it. If you don't pay council tax then to the council (who run the elections) you don't exist.

Mike Tipping yes but none of that entitles them to disenfranchise you. as I said in another post on here an elections officer MUST register you - no Ifs or Buts. I have a degree in politics and my background is political including political activism. just let them try to take my vote off me. I dare them - I double dare them!

there's a café in Rishton in Lancashire next to the canal and they will deliver to your boat

Other boaters have used a pub or such to get food delivered to you and they wait there during the time slot you gave them...noproblem.org.uk/blog/tesco-home-delivery/

Interesting in that the town I live in, about 900, there is no mail delivery other than rural route so if you want mail a PO Box is necessary. And it is odd I live just behind the post office. This is in northeast Texas, USA.

Wow ! its a minefield, Banks etc will not accept PO boxes.

Use a family members address, for post & Legal reasons. Or Pay Someone a small fee to use theirs. But there must be a lot of TRUST ! Try an overseas address ? any relatives abroad with a holiday home / villa Apartment etc. Declare yourself Off Shore for 8 months in a year ? ( Technically Legal ???? ) Not sure ? what if you actually did live off shore on a Yacht in the Med' etc ? Channel Islands ? That needs looking into ? Possibly ? for some people ? Just tell them you live on " A BOAT " ! you don't need to say what type or size boat & where it sails . a boat can sail anywhere in the world ! Never say Canal or Narrow boat ! That would be very silly ! A boat is a boat ! it moves on water & has no wheels. and it is not a stone building. ! I would NAME my boat :- " A MILLION POUND YACHT IN THE MED " I would just blame the Ex Girlfriend for being Drunk & Sarcastic when she Named it !
