What is Withdrawal? How Long Does it Last?

Фильм және анимация

Update: I now offer coaching sessions for individuals going through withdrawal, so please visit www.lovelygrind.com/coaching for more information.
Video Description: Antidepressant and tranquilizer withdrawal is often confusing and misunderstood. In this video, I discuss my withdrawal from Paxil and Xanax - a few of my symptoms as well as my protracted timetable for healing. But please remember, symptoms will vary and a healing timetable is totally individual. No matter what step of the journey you are on, no matter your symptoms, your healing will come.

    Yes, those long-suffering spouses deserve a lot of credit. My wife helped in so many ways, never allowing me to wallow in self-pity or get too down on myself. And just finding so many little ways to make a healing environment at home or to brighten a dark day with a little bit of fun. It's a tough situation for family members to understand, but they don't need to understand it completely. They just need to understand we need support. And if the support is given, it will pay off in a big way. I think we both ought to give our wives a special thanks today! Take care and keep watching.

    Good video, addressing your opinion on the timeline question. When we are suffering that is a big question. Also involved is the age of the person, imo. A 65 yr old will have perhaps a rough time than a 35 yr. Lots of benzos and antidepressants being prescribed to seniors I see reported. It is natural for some to get into late life, retirement depression and anxiety, and these meds are a course of action. You are presenting your experience in a very helpful manner.

    Thx for you helping us. I wasn't able to get my prescription of Klonopin refilled & experienced horrible withdrawls. I made the decision to taper off this drug. I have been in a wheelchair for 44 years now. I am on 2 other drugs as well. I came off fentenyl & obycodone over a 12 month period & now I don't have the chronic pain. So I am now working on getting off the Klonopin & the 2 others as well. The first part of a journey starts with a single step. I have not slept for 5 days now. I decided to go back on the Klonopin & do a correct taper over time. Thanks & I just joined & I will continue to watch & I as well know God & pray the Serenity Prayer & Pray daily. Maybe I keep expecting to be healed by now which makes the bad days worse...heeding all the advice - exercise, don't exercise, rest, push yourself, eat right, avoid stress - every day living with this is stress! getting out of bed is stressful, facing another day of hell. I had a few scattered days and hours this month of window. Took a turn for the worse at month 20, I think. Right now shooting pain up my forehead on the right side. Pain over my heart waxing and waning. The physical symptoms prevent me from living a normal life. Then the DR kicks in and makes things worse. I was exercising but now barely leave the house. Feels like I'm going backwards. Recent tests say I'm okay, I just don't feel well. No one in my world understands and I'm losing family and friends, because I can't be there for them. I can't make plans. I am just so sick and tired of feeling sick and tired and scared. All this because I took ativan for insomnia caused by menopause 10 years ago. I developed anxiety almost immediately after using ativan occasionally. I would recommend never expect a benzo to cure what ails you - they cause the very symptoms they were made to subdue.

    My heart goes out to you, and I hope that you find relief from your recent wave. Don't be discouraged by setbacks. Recovery, like life, seems to be an ongoing process of joyful moments and painful setbacks. But the healing continues. As long as you're putting more distance and time between yourself and the medications, you're healing. It is a terribly individual process in some respects, so all people can do is offer stories, "best" advice, and encouragement. I hope that you continue to find positive sources of encouragement during your process. The joyful moments will become more frequent. Believe it!

    Exactly. I was put on xanax 4 times a day 1mg. For over 12 years. I was put on it due to my esophagus wasn't working right. I never had anxiety or panic attacks until I went on this. I was tapered 1/2 every week. I'm on week 4 with 1/2 a pill thats it. My doctor said since I have done so well tapering, she doesn't think I will have any problems. I'm thinking ok that sounds great. But I cant possibly be the only person that was tapered off with out a lot of problems. I was already sick and bedridden for over a year now, from Graves, not being diagnosed. Thought it was all in my head. I shook so bad if I did anything. I'm now on my way to healing from that. Now my body decided to reject the xanax and is making me have adrenaline running through my body 24/7 It sucks. I know I would be healed from everything I went through and the Graves being treated. But now I have to go through this. I'm keeping a positive attitude that I wont go through what every person I have read about calls Hell. To be honest I'm already having symptoms of insomnia but sleeping during the day with no trouble. I dont work so that's not a problem. I just dont have a life right now. Headaches, not a good appetite. So will see how next week goes. After this coming Saturday I will be off completely. I am sorry for all you who have and will be going through this. I cant even begin to understand how friends and family have left people because of this. They sure liked you on the medicine but now that you need them the most I'm seeing people losing their loved ones help. I have had great support from my husband and sisters. But I dont live with them. Only my husband. Just know your not alone and to take it day to day. We didnt get this way overnight and were not going to get better overnight. Well that's my story so far, I will keep you up to date with how I'm doing. TFS a great video HUGGS Terrie

    21 months off Xanax. Heart palpitations aren’t nowhere near as bad, and they come in waves. Severe acid reflux & GERD, GI issues, awareness of heartbeat, hypersensitive esophagus from reflux, muscle ticks, head & neck pressure every time I get up and stand. It is getting better though. I feel like my vagus nerve is still shocked, which in the early mornings gives me an irregular heartbeat. Crazy what Xanax does. I think Xanax is the worst benzodiazepine. Stay patient, rest a lot, stay hydrated, go to church, ask God to help with healing.

    @@whatistrue0293 I am doing a lot better bro. It’s most definitely waves & windows throughout the process, at least for me. Some days I feel great, some days the symptoms aren’t as hard, but other days they’re terrible. It’s insane how our bodies are fighting so hard to return to normal. But they will man, trust me. I’m now at 31 months off and a lot of symptoms have subsided. I’m still left with PVC’s (getting less & less), sleep issues (nothing magnesium can’t handle), and sternum soreness & aching. The mistake I made was going on a very low carb diet while my nervous system was still compromised, which resulted in a pretty messed up electrolyte imbalance. I found my dizziness & fatigue was from low magnesium & potassium. Fixed those issues slowly and now feeling a lot better. I still have blood pressure fluctuations also, a little bit of bradycardia but not as often as before. I’m actually going back into a regular food diet, throwing carbs back in and also red meat. But I’m drinking lots of water and watching my salt intake. I still fast also, 16-18 hours most days. Little things that helped me are magnesium (triple calm & natural calm for sleep), sleep talk downs & anxiety meditations, breathing techniques, and light exercise (light half mile to 1 mile walks & jogs) but early in the day, also been eating more protein. Hope you’re holding up well!

Do whatever you must to continue trudging the crappy road of protracted w/d as it does appear to have fewer pot-holes down the road. About 10-14 months the beginnings of some hope I was going to get better flashed in my mind. I do agree with the fella talking that we are all unique and it'll take what it does for each of us - it does get better, even when you don't feel it will.

    I've been on about every single anti depressant and beta blockers none worked as they should I do take a benzo as needed but i try to fight it myself and only had one in about 3 months. So me and my physiatrist decided to do it with zero meds, I'm off paxil it's been a month now and I did wean off the correct way but these past two weeks have been very rough anxiety and depression wise and it seems to be getting worse. That's a long time that you've been used to living with drugs. Of course life is going to be different - and difficult for a while - without them. I can clearly remember my first few weeks and months off Xanax (after having been on it for about 13 years); going grocery shopping and getting a haircut seemed almost impossible. I was just so used to always relying on a pill to get through "social" activity - even for things as mundane as errands. But you do get used to the reality of life without the pills, and it doesn't always take as long as you might think it would. Stay strong day by day for a while, accepting that this is a new reality. The weeks will turn to months and you will find healing. Talk soon and God bless.

    Unfortunately, these meds are often the only things the doctors have the time, effort, or knowledge to prescribe as solutions to complex problems. They are first resorts when they should be last, given the risks associate with them. I've heard of cases like yours, where problems arose after very short-term use. It is frustrating, but don't despair. Just keep moving in a positive direction with exercise, creativity, planning, goal setting, spiritual growth, and proper nutrition (including hydration) and you will see healing.

    Such a useful video that I was looking for. Now when I am almost 4 months off xanax, ( 0.5 mg for 20 months , including 5 months tapering) suffering badly from so many physical mental symptoms, they come and go , changing every day. Intense head pressure, like it is squeezed, spinning heavy head, vision distortion, dizziness and sometimes tilted to one side, aggression, etc are they common in benzo withdrawal and at the end of 4 months off? Before watching this video, I was thinking that there is something wrong with me other than withdrawal, but as you say it doesn't matter how long and how much I have taken, withdrawal may be individual for everyone. It's hell, and at this point, I can't believe that It will go away. Thanks a lot Michelle.....for this positivity.❤

I'm not surprised to hear that you are suffering after only a small dose. Some people take large doses for long periods of time, some take tiny doses or moderate ones for short periods; its really all over the board with this type of medication. Just remember that you aren't alone, and you are well on your way to healing. Just think of all the progress you've made already. 8 months is an accomplishment. Keep faithful, exercise, stay spiritual, and keep dreaming of how much growth and progress you will enjoy. You are getting better.

  • @TheLovelyGrind

    @TheLovelyGrind

    Don't know the exact answer to that, but I guess I would just cross that bridge when you come to it, measuring the risks and rewards. For example, if you need a procedure to save your life, then get it done. However, if it's plastic surgery or something and you worry about sedation as related to withdrawal healing, then wait. I haven't been sedated, just had numbing agents in the gums for dental procedures years back. Take care!

    Dave, I should have probably waited longer. I got off the Paxil rather quickly and then immediately started an approximately one-year taper of Xanax. I could have spaced those two cessations out more and also taken much longer to taper the Xanax .Take it as slowly as you need to. There are some tapering schedules online etc., and perhaps a doctor can help you put one together also (although doctors aren't always the brightest when it comes to such things, so you will probably have to do much research yourself).

    The symptoms in this can fly all over the place, affecting our legs or arms one day, our stomachs and minds the next. It is very important that we never become too discouraged by the presence of a new symptom. Hi, I have to wean off Xanax. I used to take 2 mg for 18 years. This last year I have taken 1 mg a day. I take half in the morning and half at night. A week ago I tried only a half for the whole day. My doctor wanted to stop cold turkey! I think a lot are stupid. I told her I don’t want to have a seizure! A half made me cranky and jittery and my head always feels weird inside. It feels like electric stuff going on. I could not handle just half a day and I went back to half in morning and half at night. I’m not sure what to do. Maybe half in morning and a quarter of that at night? I’m doing this on my own since my doctor is an idiot. I take pills for high blood pressure and I am wondering if taking a GABA supplement would help out. Not sure though if it can be taken with other prescription pills. What are your thoughts on a GABA supplement or maybe L Theanine supplement? I need help with this.

  • @TheLovelyGrind

    @TheLovelyGrind

    Kim, first, I would seek out a different doctor who is more knowledgeable and compassionate if you can. The Xanax taper should be much slower, 10-15 percent cuts would be great if possible, and maybe you could get a new doctor to prescribe .25 mg pills to make the cutting easier. I also took bp meds while on the xanax (3 different bp meds), and I was able to wean off them after quitting the Xanax, quitting cigarettes, and exercising more. As far as the supplements, I think those would probably just complicate things right now. Just focus on good nutrition and a gradual taper plan to begin with. I'm glad you found my channel. Keep checking in here!

    The Lovely Grind, thank you for replying back and for your videos. I have Kaiser Permanente and not many good doctors are left. Almost all of them are getting people off Xanax. My doctor still prescribes it for me though. I went from taking 1mg pill twice a day to 1 mg pill a day. I’ve been doing the 1 mg for over a year now. I cut them up into quarters and I just started a couple days ago taking a quarter in the morning and .50 mg in the evening. I’m doing ok on that. A bit of jitters and palpitations. I try breathing through it. I’ll wean down a bit each month and hopefully it won’t be hell. I started a Keto diet and hoping that will help too. I’ll keep watching your videos and keep you informed. Thank you again! 😊

    No way to know how long things last. But many times I think that the length/severity of withdrawal can be a product of how long we were on meds and on what doses, etc. That suggests that you might not be dealing with this for as long as I was, for example. But don't worry about a timeline right now. Just worry about taking care of yourself each week, and trying to find a little improvement each week. Only God can see the full picture, so just put things in His hands and take one step at a time. Healing happens for both those on the meds a short time and those on for a longer time, so just know that it will happen for you!

    I was put on meds for sleep.. which led to doctor telling me the side effects I felt were not the pills and that I needed a psychiatrist so I listened ... I was hospitalized three times and put on so many things over two and a half years.. after stopping all meds, I started feeling depersonalized extremely (I felt this upon starting some of the pills also)...I burn from my head to my hips all day everyday ... buzzing inside... electrocuting all inside .... the pain is a 13 most days for the past month and a half...Will this stop?I've been to doctors and they say its nothing or that they don't know... all my tests have come back perfect... withdrawal is my only logical explanation because I never had issues until starting all this junk... and then getting off as well.... extreme depression and suicidal thoughts daily... is this withdrawal? And is there anything natural I can take for relief? I can't take being in my body anymore ....

    Yes, I don't doubt that it is all simply withdrawal, although saying "simply" isn't really accurate, because the situation is so complicated at times. I experienced dozens of symptoms during the worst of withdrawal, and it lasted a good while for me, 18-24 months (although I often experienced periods of relief and healing during that time, so don't think every second will be gloom and doom). Some symptoms are psychological, some physical, some emotional - it's all withdrawal. Just get through day by day by: a) resting when you can and eating healthy/drinking plenty of water b) staying spiritual, praying, reading devotions and scripture, trying to find the hope and perspective you need c) exercising with walks etc. as you can, I know it isn't always easy d) finding support from people who have gone through it (often online but some books also) e) take simple pain relievers like Advil liquid gels etc. for body pains and a tea like Yogi brand bedtime with valerian root can help for sleep; also I never stopped having the occasional beer at night to find temporary relief from the day's stress, but always in extreme moderation with that and only what your body tells you is right. Just use these and other tactics to get through a day and then a week and month, and trust me, the healing will occur. Also, keep a journal to empty your mind and track the process. God bless and stay in touch.

    Yes, those symptoms and many others are classic prescription-drug withdrawal. Both antidepressants and tranquilizers will cause every imaginable physical and mental pain. But given time and care, the body and mind will heal. Just keep making it through the days and weeks, one at a time. As far as the St. John's Wort goes, I never tried it, but just evaluate how it is working (or not) in your case and then revise your plan if necessary. God bless you and stay strong. Find small ways to get through each day. Little, tiny things to look forward to. I was on Paxil for about 14 years, so I know. Just stay spiritual, read devotions and pray. Also, go for walks when you can. Maybe drink Yogi brand bedtime tea to help with sleep and take baths (and advil liquid gels) for body pains. I've said this before and, despite those who disagree, I'll say it again. There's nothing wrong with having an occasional beer at night to get through withdrawal either. I also used a fan to block out noise, and try for no screen time before bed (tablets, phones, etc.). Also, when awaking after a short period of sleep, tea and devotion reading can help to calm us back down so that we don't panic about a the sleeplessness.

    Another good point to add to this great video. It doesn't matter whether you took benzos for 2 weeks or 2 years, it can take the same time to heal. The neurologist I'm seeing now "due to polyneurooathy" has a lot of experience with benzos and has said that he does see many people withdraw for years that were only on benzos for a few weeks. I was on Ativan for 2 months, and I'm still in hell at 6 months off. I took as prescribed. My dose was .5mg three times a day. I was forced to quit cold turkey. It has 100% altered my life. I truly hope that one day these drugs are banned from the market. They do more harm than good. They never helped me. I was given them for a small bit of anxiety and sleep issue. Both things that I feel a little lifestyle change and loosing a few stressors in my life would have cured. This is a great video. Brian, I've read many stories like yours. Short-term use and long withdrawal. It's sad and it's reality. I too think these pills should be banned, but if we just keep educating others with our stories, then perhaps that will serve the same purpose eventually. Your right, lifestyle changes are what is often needed for anxiety and depression in the first place, and they also play a big part in recovery from these pills, ironically. So pay sooner or later, but the "paying" has to be done. The good news, however, is that the lifestyle changes will serve a long-term purpose (getting more spiritual, eating healthy, exercising, paying attention to your own happiness, finding fulfillment etc.) and even this painful experience can be a blessing. Take care and keep healing. It will get better. God bless and have a great Thanksgiving, okay?

    If you only took the medication for a week, I wouldn't even consider something called withdrawal. Just move on with your life and take care of your health!

    Hello Dara Jean, I took mine for just a week and had withdrawals symptoms that scared me. Did you have any withdrawal symptoms and if you did, how long did yours last? My most worry is my inability to focus on objects or confusion.. did you have any of this too??

    Did you drink beer during your withdrawal? If so did it seem to make it worse?

  • @TheLovelyGrind

    Yes I did. My advice, if a person chooses to indulge from time to time, is moderation. Overdoing it isn't going to help the mental or emotional state, but in moderation it can actually be something to look forward to after a tough day of surviving (and a much better option that going back on pills). Hope that helps.

    Sorry for the delayed reply, but if you haven't been on a medication that long and it is hurting not helping, then it's a good time to stop. Before it gets more difficult. Take care and stay connected here!

    I knew he was present at all times, although I also felt darkness was strongly present. As I've talked about, it is a spiritual battle, so keep "going through the motions" of staying close to God even as you wait for the emotional connection to strengthen and the light to shine through with more beauty! The "feeling it" (or feeling good) part will come if it hasn't already!

    Do you mean during withdrawal? Yes. I lost some weight at first because I wasn't hungry, but after that it was all intentional, due to diet and exercise. I'd put on some weight during years of medication use and getting back in shape was a real goal for me.

    Well, the pills can make you forget about food, that's for sure. There were a few years when I survived mostly on coffee, cigarettes, soda, and pills. I only ate a big meal at night and actually thought that eating during the day would make me tired. Don't worry, after the initial sickness of withdrawal, you can get back to healthy eating and exercise and a normal weight. But tapering is always recommended. I tapered for almost a year I believe. Wasn't easy, but necessary.

    Yes, that can be a common part of anxiety, withdrawal, and actually dehydration I believe as well. Drink lots of water and try to find ways to relax the muscles and mind.
