What is the OTDR?

With the growing trend of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) services, verifying the integrity of the fiber optic cables with the right OTDR testing methods has never been more vital to be able to quickly identify and locate faults. So what is the OTDR? In short the OTDR is use for fiber optic link characterization and troubleshooting.
So how do you use it?
Lets talk about it.

NO WAY!! Thanks a bunch for your sincere comment. I started this channel to help techs who were sketchy on getting in the field. I'm glad this video helped. Check out the other videos in my playlist. Thanks again!!!

Nice to see somebody using OTDR and can read a trace. Most ppl now are using iOLM.

We test alot of live fiber on this job i'm on. Live fiber OTDRs are hard to come by, one guy bought an Exfo one for several grand, turns out it didn't have a 1650/ 1625 capable module. I'm looking at the these D Yedemc cheap ones about $400 bucks one Amazon. If it works even a little bit I think it would be worth it, it won't shoot thru a splitter, not the end of the world. Obviously your not going to troubleshoot large distances, cabinets, or submit exfo files with it, but for finding a broken cable or bad splice..... It would be a game changer if the thing is actually functional I guess i'm going to buy one and take one for the team. Im currently using a T-Berd 2000 with a 1625 module on it, its slow but accurate just to expensive to buy one for everybody. Thank you for not using Meters!

Okay I know I should wait for the full explanation & not ask in the first 6 min, but will these light pulses help us time travel?🤔 Asking for a friend who's looking at expensive flights these days ✈️ 💸

After 17+ years as a contractor in-home tech (15 FTTN & FTTH for the telco & 2+ HFC for the cable co) I'm looking at either getting out altogether or maybe somehow getting into this. But i feel like the industry has gone to 💩 and not worth it to start at the bottom. I regret not working directly for the incumbents cuz lowly contractors get treated the worst, yet have to meet the same strict standards.

true. you get treated like a redheaded step child and you better be up to snuff right. that sucks. I'm doing a livestream on the 22nd of November call in or join the panel. I'd be happy to chat with you and I'm sure plenty of techs out there would value your experience if you shared it.

you get much squirrel damage? around here the laneways are littered with discarded jumper cables from hack techs 😩

  • @JBWR

@rust blade, squirrel damage (squirrel chew) in my plant picks up during the cold months and become increasing frequent as the winter draws to an end. Maybe the squirrels starve more and become desperate? But when it comes to discarded jumper cables, that happens more so on the coax side of things. Some of our techs work in areas that aren't the safest, so on discos they just cut on run and I don't blame them. Yet, it is these very discarded drops that cause noise issues in the plant. BTW, I operate a HFC plant. LIKE. Share. SUB-Scribe.
